Hey I'd like some help picking some year 1 med books
Especially for anatomy

Studying your uni lecture note is most important as you are being tested based on the lecture notes, for reference books, stick to what your uni recommend.


I personally use gary's anatomy for students version, nettter's atlast of human anatomy,for neuroanatomy i use Inderbir Singh's Textbook of Human Neuroanatomy all i couple wit my lecture notes. Dissection session are most important, read b4 u go n try to get your hands involved, touch the speciments, get a feel of it if your uni still use cadavers to teach.

Hi thanks a lot you're so informative, my uni gives us notes to read and suggest some books but it's entirely up to us to decide what we want to buy and read. You use three books for year 1 ?

i use gray's n netter in yr 1, neuro in my uni is taught in 2nd yr.

gray's is a textbook for u to read, while netter is used after reading the text to get the visual impact, so u knw what r u reading, instead of imagining things which r very hard to picture.. an extra neuroanatomy book is needed as these books don't describe the neuro part well.

physio i use guyton n hall as my main textbook bt sometimes i borrow ganong from my fiends. Ganong is a review book, lack of many details which can be get from guyton. i use ganong for its diagrammatic explanation n guyton as text reference, so these 2 books compliment each other. pathology i use robbins pathologic basis of disease version, not the robbins basic pathology version. of course, all these textbook is just to support the lecture notes i get from lectures.

Depends on how your uni teaches you. Our lecture notes are pretty comprehensive and informative. I'll provide my list anyhow

Anatomy: I use ATLAS only. Gilroy is my favourite!
Neuroanatomy: aussies use Nolte. It's awesome. It's horrible at the same time cos your brain atrophies after reading it.
Physio: notes. but if you want, guyton is waaaaaaaaaay enough for this level.
Micro/Biochem/pharmaco: Notes. I use pharmaco made easy. I have a simple brain.
Patho: Robins.

Depends on your lecturer recommendation.

Certain Indian oriented universities/colleges (eg; MMMC, AIMST) tend to use Indian medical books such as Chaurasia' Anatomy books for both theory and practical dissection.
