It is a linchpin, yes.

Being aware that good deeds cultivate merit is different from doing a good deed for the express purpose of cultivating merit.

The former is okay; you can still demonstrate altruism under such a mindset.

The latter is not; it is not altruistic, for the motive is at least partially self gain.

Actually, Singapore is stricter regarding religious burning than Malaysia is, believe it or not.
