Including one on a hilltop, yes.

The hilltop one is pretty imposing, but I haven't had much to do with either of these places, unfortunately.

What is the Bridge of Peace?

The Bridge of Peace or Ping An Qiao/平安桥 is a ritual structure along which devotees may walk, led by a medium and in conjunction with certain prayers plus offerings, in a ceremony aimed at dispelling the troubles, difficulties and sorrows that plague them (all of which will be become but 'water under the bridge').

Hi Nachtsider, longtime lurker here, this thread has always been a thoroughly fascinating read. Thank you for your various commentaries/providing us with insight into sintua worship.

I would identify myself as Buddhist, but have a strong spiritual affinity with Guan Yin as a personal guardian of sorts since childhood. Faith is intrinsically personal and inexplicable, and there have been many, many instances where my prayers have carried me through trying times.

Recently got to know of Cundi and Matsu worship as well. Are these goddesses various emanations/aspects of Guan Yin, or different beings altogether? I was recently in a temple in Petaling Street where I saw a Cundi idol being worshipped alongside Thousand-Armed Guan Yin, thus sparking my curiosity. My grandma has always worshipped Matsu, so I'd like to carry on the family tradition of honouring the goddess.

Thanks smile.gif

Hello Flint, my gratitude goes out to you, rather, for your viewership and interest. Don't be a stranger; feel absolutely free to drop whatever comments and questions on the topic that come to mind. My door is always open. smile.gif

I'm overjoyed to hear of your close relationship with Guan Yin; may you know no less than a lifetime of sacred bliss in her care. My late maternal grandfather was the family's die-hard Guan Yin devotee; my allegiances lie elsewhere, as you no doubt know by now, but I deeply respect her and continue to maintain the altar he set up in her honour. Below is its centrepiece - a Guan Yin statue that has been with us for more than fifty years.

Zhun Di and Guan Yin are two similar female aspects of the sexless Avalokitesvara. I regard them as being sisters of sorts, which isn't entirely wrong, I would think. While Guan Yin personifies compassion, Zhun Di symbolises enlightenment, wisdom and courage. She is a more dynamic and martial individual than Guan Yin, signified by the fact that she can often be seen wielding divine weapons and making sacred mudras with her hands to shield/protect her followers, actively ward off evil and dispel the dark clouds of doubt. By contrast, Guan Yin is a strict pacifist.

Ma Zu is an entirely different goddess with no connection to either of the abovementioned Bodhisattvas. I have spoken about her earlier in the thread; here is the relevant post:

Who is Lady Ma Zu?

Once upon a time, on the island of Mei Zhou, there lived a fishing family by the name of Lin/林, whose only daughter, Mo Niang/默娘, was a superb swimmer and diver. She was renowned for single-handedly saving many luckless people, including young children and shipwrecked sailors, from drowning, and often stood out on rocks in the middle of the ocean, dressed in bright garments and holding a torch, to guide ships safely to shore through stormy weather. As a reward for her selfless bravery, the plucky girl was deified, receiving the title Saintly Queen of Heaven/天后圣母, although she is most commonly known as Ma Zu/妈祖 or Ancestral Mother.

Ma Zu is a sea goddess, possessing the power to control the wind and the waves. She is the patron saint of travellers, particularly those who are travelling over or across the sea. In days gone by, immigrants from China who journeyed by boat to far-off lands (such as the Malay Archipelago) prayed to Ma Zu for safe journeys, and erected temples to her in the places that they settled as a form of thanksgiving.

Often depicted accompanying Ma Zu are two imp-like creatures; the green-skinned Qian Li Yan/千里眼 or Thousand-League Eye, and the red-skinned Shun Feng Er/顺风耳 or Down-the-Wind Ears. These elemental beings, formerly a mischievous pair of troublemakers who wreaked havoc by flippantly altering the weather, were subdued by Ma Zu and subsequently became her loyal attendants. Capable of seeing great distances and hearing the tiniest noises, respectively, as well as flying swiftly, they serve as lookouts, information-gatherers and couriers.

To prevent intrusion of the Datuk shrine by stray animals.

To stop them from messing around with the offerings and other paraphernalia.

Wow, aren't you quite the mind-reader. blink.gif

The throne was custom made to order, correct; I got my longtime prayer material supplier, Soon Poh Private Limited, to commission it.

They are Klang's premier prayer material emporium, located in the Jalan Nanas area, whose services I have used for more than a decade; the second pic is one of me with the boss, Mr Lim, who is practically an old friend by now.

Everyone goes to Hell first to be processed.

Once it is determined how good or how bad they were in life, they will then be dispatched to whichever place is appropriate for their good deeds and sins.

Yes, you can then be dispatched to Heaven - even if you worship Hell deities.

Only if they deserve to be rewarded.

Most of the time, to meet Tua Li Ya Pek is to meet death.

Nice throne. Did you come up with the design yourself? What are those deities carved on the chair legs?
