Question - after the initial fixing of the braces, how often does one need to go to see the dentist, and can he go to another dentist for follow up?

I am looking at scenario of a student studying overseas getting braces installed in Malaysia during his holiday, and then goes back to college. Will this be practical? Any suggestion for best solution for this situation? The cost to fix braces overseas is very high.
