Ok, let me get this straight. From a lot of posts in the Health and Fitness section, most forummers seem to misinterpret the word DIET. When i say diet, it means (nutrition), the sum of the food consumed by an organism or group, NOT EATING LESS!

There's a difference between diet and dieting where dieting = the deliberate selection of food to control body weight or nutrient intake.

Actually on a point of entymology "Diet" could be used to mean both.

It his hardly misinterpretation. It is all a question of context.

alot of malaysian take the word diet as
eating less
or
dont eat at all
thats why diet coke in malaysia was rebranded as coke light
if you skip a meal people would ask
diet ah?
bahhhhhhhh

the problem here is not the context in which the word is used, but how people interpret it.

malaysians in general seem to think the word diet only means to lose weight, but if you look up most dictionaries that is a secondary meaning with the primary being "food a person, community, etc consumes habitually"(or something to that effect), because of this whenever we talk about diets somehow or other people keep misinterpreting it to mean "to lose weight" even when we're talking about bulking up and this can be most annoying.

i have to agree with darklight on this issue, people need to learn how to read and comprehend what they're reading better, how can one possibly think the word diet is being used in the context of weight loss when the person writting the post is talking about weight gain.

Can't you understand that there may actually be more than ONE meaning in common use for a word?

If I may illustrate with an example:

Time Flies Like An Arrow
Fruit Flies Like A Banana

Note the two very different meanings possible on the word "Flies" and "Like".

Get a grip man... Are you beginning to find that Dieting is so important to you that you feel a need to be so pedantic on even its entymologic definition? Perhaps you need to try to find the reasons underlying this. Therapy helps. wink.gif

Actually its good darklight made it clear, afterall he is posting to help a lot of builders here and the wrong understanding of his posts could be disastrous. You dont want to interpret his comments to think diet equates to eat less as that would void all the hard hours at the gym. Sure, its plainly obvious to most builders, but there are lots of newbies here when it comes to building including me biggrin.gif

lol, what's your major malfunction?

the discussion is definitely going the way of suggesting proper food choices for a healthy diet. the perception that diet always means cutting down on food intake is a stereotype and he opened the thread just to debunk it and you somehow have to, out of so many subforums, come in and let everyone know how much smarter you are than everyone else.

if you've got issues concerning your need to prove your intellectual superiority in a forum do come clean and let us know. mental health is health too. who knows? maybe we can straighten you up, or better yet, get tired of your display of superior knowledge and refer you to a shrink instead.

I'm sorry, but your attempt at trying to be a smart ass fails. Your redundant elucidation fails. I can use fancy vocabulary with you all day but what's the point? rolleyes.gif Therapy helps for your attention deficit disorder. wink.gif Now go back to mommy and show her your past preschool report cards for which you got A's for "Engrish".

noone's arguing the fact that there are several meanings to the word diet or any other word for that matter, what darklight is saying or atleast what i think he's saying is that people are misunderstanding his use of the word far too often.

sheesh.

Actually, the thought of "sharing love" with bodybuilders is REALLY not my thing so count me out.

... now that was said entirely in jest. I'm perfectly aware that the stereotypes that come with bodybuilding are purely stereotypes and have no basis whatsoever.

And whilst I've enjoyed our banter here (It's amazing how much fun can be had from just the word "Diet") it has come to the point that I'll offer my apologies: I'm sorry if I've caused you guys to get upset. It was really not my intention.

I just wanted to disagree with the rigid/uncompromising definition of that pesky word "Diet". That's all. I did not mean to show off my (limited) intellect or anything. Heck, I can barely spell. And if I used any words of more than two syllables I'll apologize for that too.

You're giving great advice to like minded individuals here and I'm getting in the way. I realize that and will go away.

Again, my apologies for causing offence. It was unintentional.

Apology accepted and i apologize too. I might have overreacted but think about it, I put an innocent thread trying to clear up general misconceptions and it turns out to be an English class. Wtf. Lol. No worries mate.
Nobody said your intellect was limited, it was just irritating that you had to nit pick on every minute detail i posted. You can't blame me for being defensive. I love you too man, in a Viking sort of way. shocking.gif tongue.gif
