graphic novel --- >
QUOTE
300 is a graphic novel, written and illustrated by Frank Miller with painted colors by Lynn Varley. It depicts the Battle of Thermopylae and the events leading up to it from the perspective of Leonidas, king of Sparta. The comic was particularly inspired by the 1962 film The 300 Spartans, a movie that Miller watched as a young boy.

Every page of the comic was illustrated as a double-page spread. When the series was collected into hardcover form, the individual pages were twice as wide as a normal comic. Miller's art style for this project was similar to his Sin City work, although the addition of color is an obvious difference.

300 is a historical epic film directed by Zack Snyder, scheduled to be released in 2007. Based on the epic graphic novel by Frank Miller, 300 is a ferocious retelling of the ancient Battle of Thermopylae in which King Leonidas and 300 Spartans fought to the death against Xerxes and his massive Persian army. Facing insurmountable odds, their valor and sacrifice inspire all of Greece to unite against their Persian enemy, drawing a line in the sand for democracy. The film brings Miller's acclaimed graphic novel to life by combining live action with virtual backgrounds that capture his distinct vision of this ancient historic tale.

2007 will see the comeback of several high budget movies and sequels (of course). in stead of those, i am most excited about 300 (no Halo isn't coming), the movie adaptation of Frank miller comic "300" which itself was inspired by the 1952 movie "300 men".
the story is about the 300 warriors of sparta who face off in the desperate battle of thermepillai against 1 million of the great persian army.
the look and the feel of this movie is awesome. they have blended cgi with live action to create some amazing backdrops. the music is eclectic and exciting. i just hope they keep the kind of music in the trailer in the movie, instead of normal orchestra which has been done to death.
looks like this is gonna be a movie with style and loads of attitude.
watch the trailer and form your own opinion. as far as i am concerned, screw spidey, 300 FTW!

download the trailer and watch it on full sound. damn. haven't seen a better movie trailer eva!

the music in the trailer is from Nine Inch Nails albeit modified a bit, i didn't realise this until my friend pointed it out, but weird that it was not mentioned in the credits of the trailer,IIRC i saw Tyler Bates or somebody like that in the 'Music by' credit.

p/s: am reading the comic now..this is gonna be awesome..woot

it's based on a real event in history termed the Battle of Thermopylae between Spartans and Persians but events and characters in this story has been modified and exaggerated by Frank Miller to make it more entertaining (if I may say so), heh and the monster you were referring to plays an important role to the outcome of the battle at the end.

I just saw a movie that'll give your eyes boners, make your balls scream and make you poop DVD copies of THE TRANSPORTER. It's called 300. I don't know what the title has to do with the movie, but they could've called it KITTENS MAKING CANDLES and it'd still rule.

It's about these 300 Greek dudes who stomp the sugar-coated **** out of like a million other dudes. I have a feeling that a lot of high school sports coaches are going to show this film to their teams before they play. Also, gay dudes and divorced women are going to use screen captures for computer wallpaper.

The movie takes place about a million years ago, and it's sort of like a prequel to SIN CITY. Except way less guns and cars but twice as much skull splitting. If you watch this movie and go into a Taco Bell, and say to the cashier, "I need some extra sauce packets" guess what? You're getting twenty sauce packets because your face will punch him in the brain.

I can't spoil the plot because THANK GOD THERE ISN'T ONE. Just ass kicking that kicks ass that, while said ass is getting kicked, is kicking yet more ass that's hitting someone's balls with a hammer made of ice but the ice is frozen whiskey.

TWO COOL THINGS ABOUT THE MOVIE AND ONE THING I DIDN'T LIKE:

COOL THING ONE:
HEAVY METAL DURING BATTLE SCENES

Who gives a **** if the music isn't historically correct? LORD OF THE RINGS could've used some Journey. This movie has that chu-CHUNG kind of metal that you hear in your head when your shift supervisor at Wetzel's Pretzel is telling you that you'll have to stay for clean up and you wish you had a sock filled with quarters in your hand.

COOL THING TWO:
FOES, MINI-BOSSES AND A BIG BOSS

Basically, the Greek dudes are fighting these Persian dudes, but the director, who must have a dick made of three machine guns, does it all like a video game. The Greeks fight every death metal video from the last ten years. There's wave after wave of giants, freaks, ninjas, mutants, wizards, and a hunchback who looks like he's got Rosie O'Donnell on his back.

Would I have been happy if Dom DeLuise from HISTORY OF THE WORLD, PART I had shown up? Maybe, but this movie more than makes up for that glaring oversight.

NOT SO GOOD THING:
DUDE NUDITY ("DUDE-ITY")

These are Greek times, when there were a lot of naked women around. And there are some naked women in this film, but almost every naked woman scene has a muscular dude giving the screen an ass picnic. Dude-ity is something directors put in their movies so people will think they're serious, I guess, and not just throwing in naked hotties.

Any directors reading this - IT'S OKAY TO JUST THROW IN NAKED HOTTIES.

Can't someone make a movie about naked Amazons and call it PAUSE BUTTON?

My final analysis is 300 the most ass-ruling movie I've seen this year, and will probably be the King of 2007 unless someone makes a movie where a pair of sentient boobs fights a werewolf.

haha I read that review in neowin. Hilarious!

btw the film has a rating of 9.1 at IMDb with nearly 600 votes. It's bound to drop but still this movie is gonna kick ass.

Gerard Butler's Leonidas is way more awesome then Russel Crowe's Maximus biggrin.gif

and this is bound to be the best movie of 2007 as IGn gave it 5/5 n imdb is standing on 9.1/10 currently

Jckk, no need to doubt. They only censored nudity scene. There is a logical reason. Wars are never a good thing, if the violence parts are censored, people will not see or feel the actual horror and suffering a war can bring to a country. By not cutting the violence in a war movie, you can feel it and hopefully will never ever want a war to happen here. But if the violence is for other reason like gangster fighting to show how powerful they are, then chances are it will be cut or minimized so it will not influence the young generation to FIGHT to show they are powerful.

I heard there are plenty of nudies, both female and male. yawn.gif So I really dont know how the censoring will turn out to be.

But if it is true no violence will be cut, then I'll see this in theaters for sure.

EDIT: I just checked cinemaonline.com.my. 300 will be released on 8th March. One day earlier than US release as usual. tongue.gif Hopefully, they have sneak preview shows on the 7th. Can't wait to watch this.

it's a song composed by Tyler Bates i guess...should be in the soundtrack album

i remember i heard it somewhere before but i couldnt remember who sang it.. blush.gif
anyone has any idea??
*
if you're referring to the music played in the trailer, at first i tot it was Tyler Bates original composition too, but then a fren of mine says it is from one of the songs by Nine Inch Nails (albeit the music has been modified a bit)...u might wanna check out the soundtrack to see if it's in there.

edit: and Yeah..i might go with my frenz to catch it in IMAX, but IMAX screenings start on the 9th i believe.

The battle isn't in Rome Total War. This is a Greek War. Happened before Achilles's era.

As for the beard, some say its ugly some say its ok. It's the norm in that era by the way.

As for the soundtrack. One question. Does anyone know what is the track title for Trailer 2 HD at the scene where the Persian messenger rides to Sparta? (The scene where he and his escorts ride over a hill) The sentimental one. No vocals.

I got a copy (of questionable origins) of the soundtrack by Tyler Bates and scanned through it to no avail. But the soundtrack is alright. Not too bad.

QUOTE
In an early screening in August 2006, Mark Cronan of Comic Book Resources gave a positive review for the film. Cronan described most of the film as being "a bit of a cross between Gladiator and several scenes from the Lord of the Rings movies". He found the film compelling, leaving him "with a feeling of power, from having been witness to something grand". However, he admitted, "This is a chest thumping, dirty, writhing mass of violence at times... It is all quite stylized and probably less gory overall than Miller's other big screen success, Sin City. Still, it's there, and if you don't want to see men fighting and dying, do not see this movie." IGN's Todd Gilchrist disagreed. Giving the film a score of five stars out of five, he said "Leonidas' relationship with his wife Gorgo offers a rare display of tenderness and devotion that is seldom seen in 'guy movies' like this one". He acclaimed Zack Snyder as a cinematic visionary as well as the visual sensibility of the film. George Rousch acclaimed the film, citing its visual appeal and Gerard Butler's performance.

300 had its world premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival on February 14, 2007 and received a standing ovation from its 1700 strong audience. Alex Billington said "Be ready to be blown away on March 9th", calling it a film ahead of its time. Kirk Honeycutt praised it, saying "Those turned off by the sex-and-violence cartoonery of Sin City can embrace 300". Emanuel Levy also praised the film, complimenting Snyder in that he "retells Miller's saga not as an ancient tale (sort of "once upon a time..."), but as a classic and eternal one." Todd McCarthy of Variety gave it a positive review, and praised Lena Headey, though he criticised Butler as he "bellows most of his bellicose lines, which become tiresomely repetitive", as well as the lack of focus on geography. Erik Davis heavily criticised the film, calling it "one of the most overly hyped films in history... a boring, fast-food version of better films, with better scripts, better acting and better battles. 300 men fought to defend their freedom but, in the end, 300 people (including me) wanted their two hours back." It also recently recieved a 100% rating at www.Rottentomateos.com

I am hoping Trent Reznor will fully produce another extraordinary movie+conversation movie soundtrack like Natural Born Killer.

Just like ur imagine is not really a favo track from NIN's work. Somehow, after the modification. It merged the trailer pretty beautiful & stunning.

Maybe ppl looking at ancient background should stick wif orchestral or LOTR dat type of music.. haha.

Finally found the song. Thanks.

By the way, if you guys would like to try something like 300, play Titan Quest. King Leonidas appears in the first chapter of the game.

Though no massive armies. Just monsters.

Regarding the track used for the trailer.

The track is the correct one for Trailer 1.

I'm looking for the Trailer 2 one. Same spot. Where the messenger appears over the hill. (This part is in the middle of the trailer not the start)

Unfortunately he didn't produce the soundtrack. Tyler Bates works are awesome. Heard his 300 OST sample. The good news that NIN's latest album, Year Zero just released and this is what he claimed,

"I'm trying to avoid getting too detailed about this, but I will tell you that this is a concept record, and it's part of a bigger picture of a number of things I'm working on. Essentially, I wrote the soundtrack to a movie that doesn't exist."

Awesome!

I've just read the review in StarTwo.

Hmmph, the part that hits me as the most unintelligent is this:

Do they have to chop each other up all the time? Could they not negotiate?

I really wonder what the reviewer was watching. Persian kill those who don't fall in. Persians chopping up Greece literally. Greek wanna negotiatie but died. Anyone getting where this is headed?

Oh oh and and the part about a perfect fighting race..

Allan Koay from the Star obviously did not study Sejarah properly. Shucks I failed Sejarah in SPM but I still know at least about the Spartan Culture where they train for war all the time. It's their way of life.

And last but not least, I can't help but bring up the fact about the mentioning of George Bush. Is there not a single movie where another country fights another (future, present or past) be somehow NOT linked to George Bush and East meets West?

Sigh, what part of adaptation from the Graphic Novel by Frank Miller do they not understand?

Correct me if i'm wrong. Hell, i've not even watched the movie yet..

this is the problem, i really dun understand wats wrg wit this ppl....must be retarded i guess

QUOTE
Even before its official release, parallels to the Iraq War have been seen, given that the film tells the story of a Western nation confronting a Middle Eastern one on the battlefield. The filmmakers assert that none were intended.

Snyder reports that after advance screenings, he was taken aside by a reporter at a screening for the international press who insisted that Xerxes had to be symbolizing George W. Bush, by taking a large, powerful army into a foreign country and confronting a small local guerrilla force to finish a war he believed his father had left unfinished. But at the Berlinale some viewers walked out, considering the film propaganda in support of possible U.S. military action against Iran (modern-day Persia) over the possibility of that country developing nuclear weapons. "Don't you think it's interesting that your film received funding at this point?" Snyder says he was asked there

Hah.. Man.. some people really can't diversify and move on. I mean, they are like getting so paranoid. Seeing things in harmless movies. Urgh.. Utterly disgusting to me.

BESIDES, Greece is a mediterranean country. How in the 4 blazes can you classify them as a western country?

They failed history, now they failed geography as well.

Just watched it and I've to say this is the first must-watch movie of 2007. The graphics were cool and also the war scenes, breathtaking.

Although the movie could have been longer, still a 9/10 for me. Must watch, must watch.

The best part of the movie is the Malay translation of "300" = "300 Pahlawan Berani Mati". WTF blink.gif

It was inspired by the Graphic Novel and so since the novel had no armor, hehe we need to ask Frank Miller bout it.

Oh and regarding, the previous question about the 2nd trailer's soundtrack..

It's still Nine Inch Nails for the part I mentioned.

The rest of the trailer used the soundtrack's one.

It was inspired by the Graphic Novel and so since the novel had no armor, hehe we need to ask Frank Miller bout it.

Oh and regarding, the previous question about the 2nd trailer's soundtrack..

It's still Nine Inch Nails for the part I mentioned.

The rest of the trailer used the soundtrack's one.

if they cut all that, then dun bother goin to the cinema...i dun care about nudity or sex, as if we've neva seen them in porn or other movies.....but the battles were total pawnage....it's not about the action in the movie nor the dramatic plot of the movie.....it's about the courage of 300 men fighting for freedom till their last breath.....Queen gorgo protrays womanhood very strongly

huh.. never knew Malaysian translators are so advanced.. just from the title '300' they translated in into '300 Pahlawan Berani Mati'... maybe to add some more spice to the movie... anyhow, i've watch it last night and it a f**king great war movie... almost or maybe all the battle scenes are not cut, even if it is cut, i didn't notice anything... almost 2 hours fly by without me noticing... only the SX scene are gone, all of them... nevermind..... but i supposed it is compensated by the movie is not publicized in our media at all except for 8tv quickie.... Primeval got better publicity.....

i recalled the scene where leonidas stick his broken spear tip into the big-stupid-ugly-strong-goldberg wannabe and it is not cut but the scene in Troy where achilles threw a spear straight in to an archer eye right when he landed on the beach is gone... dunno wat happen with the cencorship board...

xerxer is gay.. that is why his choice of hookers is so damn bad that he select monster to be his sex slaves... really pity him.....

and, the movie really looks as a game as enemy comes in waves after waves only to be repelled by the spartans.... what is funny to me is the scene with the bomb-throwing-sorcerer-wannabe-idiots... just funny looking at them throwing their little bomb while the spartans use their shield to hide.. and i dont recalled to see almost any of the xerxes army using shields... even the immortals, well maybe cause they are supposed to be immortals.....

anyway, again what a great movie.... those movielover should get off their a**es now go watch the movie..... the RM10 is worth it

Best movie I've watched since a long time.

Really pumps your adrenaline and makes you feel for the 300 warriors.

"Madness? This is Sparta!"

And the soundtrack rocks.

The Bad: Feels hollow emotionally, too much shouting from Leonidas, cliched dialogue, repetitive fight scenes, and too much slow-mo.

Sin City and 300 are different genres of movies although from Frank Miller's graphic novels, can't really compare them. Personally I feel this is the first good movie of 2007, give us more thumbup.gif

Oh and give credit to our censors. No violence was cut. Awesome.

One thing I forgot to mention was the blood. It's so videogame-ish blood. The first time you see it it's cool... but then the blood just disappears on screen... like how the blood in games just magically disappear. This is fake fake blood. I prefer the fake real blood in other movies. tongue.gif

juz came back frm watchin the 9.30 show at time square, i wud have to say this movie is definitely a recommended watch. The plot we all know (or think that we know) abt history gets exaggerated and visualized stylishly for the big screen (an adaptation of an awesome graphic novel of course).
The cinematography was really good with all that water-color style effects for the background and it was a really courage inspiring movie I will say. Certain dialogues seemed cliche but the acting I though was good and it did come out as being cool.

hmm.. An average movie to me. 5/10 is my rating marks for this movie.
The part that I love most is when the archer fires their arrow. The whole sky was covered by arrows, it was fantastic.

this movie is like nothing else i had seen b4 so far......it's violence but at the same time beautiful......perfectly directed......

words are too hard to define it......go watch it........

i watched in sunway pyramid.......and after the movie ended......the audiences inside the cinema clapped their hands......no doubt this is a great movie and achievement that deserve an applause.....

You guys didn't find the constant slow-mo fights all a tad similar and repetitive? 300 had more slow-mo than all 3 of The Matrix films combined. In fact if it were in real-time I bet the runtime would be only 1 hour. laugh.gif

i believe Zack Snyder was doing the slow-mo to replicate the frames from the pages of the comic book that depict the battle scenes, it was interesting and I didn't find it too repetitive

Just came back from watching it,I had very great expectations for the film seeing how everyones saying its good and all and it turns out it was just ok,Agreed with what quickfire said, the slow mo was repetitive. The fight scene wasn't much of an awe with the exception when leonidas fought the abomanation. Jawdropping cinematography though.

the slow mo is wat makes the fighting scenes interesting and nice to watch....i dun feel it's repetitive......imagine it without the slow mo effect.....they won't look that nice anymore......the slow mo allow us to see the every small details of creativity and artistic imagination of the director......

personally i think the slow mo has been perfectly used.......

I totally agree with you here. I think this is what sets 300 apart from the other typical war movies and I really loved the effect. Honestly I don't really feel the slow mo's were over-used, just nice nod.gif

It was a friday night. Just ended a shitty week of work. I walked into the theaters, wanting a movie with lots of blood, gore and heroics of the past only heard of from midvwives.

Glad to say, I got what i wanted. And more. =)

I was fearing that this movie would suffer from being overhyped, so i only walked in wishing to be entertained, and entertain it did.

just saw it. 2 things just did not cut it for me:

1) the lousy music. if only they got someone famous to do it. look at what Howard Shore did for LOTR or Hanz Zimmer for Gladiator.
2) David Wenham as a Spartan. he looks too goofy to be taken seriously. i keep getting reminded of his dorky character in Van Helsing laugh.gif

overall, it was an ok movie only la. the visuals were amazing, no doubt but it still felt like it lacked something.

Watched it during the premiere.

Superb show! Its so different from other war epic shows such as Alexander the Great and Troy.

Definitely recommended.

Great acting! Great cast! Great scenes! There is an element of suspence and a small sense of humour. The battle scenes are bad and bloody(just as its supposed to be) and there are "sexy" scenes included too. Was wondering why the Malaysian government didnt censor that...*hope so it wont be censored ever!*

Overall, if you are a girl like me, you would practically droll at all those good looking guys going to war with HOT bodies! *drolls*

Recommended! 9/10!

they just shouldn't censor the movie.

that's what the 18+ ratings are for! People above 18 in Malaysia are definitely mature enough to view the entire movie uncut.

The show's good though BTW. biggrin.gif

After watching it yesterday, I find its highly overated. Its not a 10/10 movie or even a 9/10 movie. Maybe its only around 7/10 but I think its the type of movie that a lot of Malaysian will like because of the cool but dumb violence scenes. What I don't like about the movie:-

1) Not historically accurate and I know its based on a comic but I can't help myself after reading about the real Battle of Thermopylae
2) Too much slo-mo action until sometimes its funny instead of cool
3) Lousy dialogue especially every words coming out from the king sounds like a battlecry
4) Battle scenes look too cartonish but I guess I cannot complain because its based on comics

I am not saying its a bad movie. In fact I enjoyed it for being so over the top but to claim that its 10/10 is definately over the top

I made the mistake of visiting the funny pics thread first before seeing the movie. Some of the dramatic scenes ended up as the funniest moments for me. Whenever Leonidas starts to scream his lungs out, i tried my best to control myself laughing.. doh.gif
RED SAUCE ON PASTA!! laugh.gif

as for the movie itself, i'd give it a 3 outta 5. it's purty but i got bored by the 2nd half of the movie.

I was listening to a radio station while driving and suddenly a girl called and talk about 300 to the dj. She even talk about the ending in her first sentence. After that, I was cursing all the way to my home.

hey guy..
i watched the movie last Thursday
i read the original comic way back
and i think that they did stay true to the comic book feel of it all
and its cool
they did add some extra scenes to it and they did a great job of making it happen
even though its not historically accurate..its just based on a comic book based on a historical event..and overall a very enjoyable movie
better then most action movies out there..
well for the lines...what can you expect from a comic book
and its not meant to be a very complex story anyway..
if they made it into an intelligent movie..it would just wreck the whole movie

and those are real abs..not fake.. those guys trained really hard for many months
to be fit for the movie...watch the making if you dont belive
and its not really possible to do that with the budget that they have and it would just waste to much time and money in post production..

anyways it a great movie..not the best but a great movie thumbup.gif

Overall very entertaining, but not as classic as Lord of The Ring & Gladiator which everybody is comparing with. I think the movie lack some elements of touching. U wont feel sad when they die, not like Gladiator, which i almost cry in the cinema when Maximus die.

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

But overall a good movie, just dont nip picking, and u will be happy forever.

I dont think any real persian (Iranian) will like to act in that movie. especially a american movie by looking at the political point of view.

This movie is to males what chocalate is to women. A winner.

Sure its a brainless flick, but i strongly suspect that being intelligent wasnt the purpose of this film at all. It was meant to entertain, and entertain it did.

Every once in a while, we need a film just like this.

TEHRAN (AFP) - War epic "300", a smash hit in the United States for its gory portrayal of the Greco-Persian wars, has drawn the wrath of Iranians for showing their ancestors as bloodthirsty "savages".

(The press, officials and bloggers have united in denouncing the film as another example of "psychological warfare" against Tehran by its American arch enemy at a time of mounting tension over its nuclear programme.

"Hollywood declares war on Iranians," said the headline in the reformist daily Ayandeh-No of the film which tells the story of the 300 Spartan soldiers fighting off ancient Persians in the Battle of Thermopylae.

"It seeks to tell people that Iran, which is in the Axis of Evil now, has for long been the source of evil and modern Iranians' ancestors are the ugly murderous dumb savages you see in '300'," fumed the paper on its front page.

A cultural advisor to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad described the film as "American psychological warfare against Iran."

"American cultural officials thought they could get mental satisfaction by plundering Iran's historic past and insulting this civilization," Javad Shamaghdari told semi-official Fars news agency.

Three MPs in the Iranian parliament have also written to the foreign ministry to protest to the production and screening of this "anti-Iranian Hollywood film".

The film has already proved a major box office hit in the United States and, unsurprisingly, Greece.

It is highly improbable the film would ever be screened in the Islamic republic but contraband DVDs of the latest American movies are often available on the streets no sooner that they are internationally released.

Cyber savvy Iranians have already started online petitions and set off "Google bombs" against "300".

The furore over "300" is by no means the first time Iran has been left fuming over Western portrayals of its ancient history.

Iranians were also enraged by the 2004 epic 'Alexander' about the conquest of the Persian Empire and a notorious 2005 British newspaper review of an exhibition of antiquities which branded ancient Persia the "Evil Empire".

Indeed. But to mention it in the same breath as Gladiator or LOTR....em... rolleyes.gif laugh.gif

It also has my least favorite trick, the shot which starts in normal speed, goes into super slow mo, then ramps back to normal speed. Lovely in trailers and clips, but always feels cheap in the movie proper.

Reminded me of Die Another Day... though its much less annoying here, laugh.gif ]

Personally, the most beautiful part was the spear's shadow gliding on the stairs. I dont know why but I found it very nice.

Saya boleh katakan, movie ini merupakan propaganda US untuk melabelkan Persian (Iran) sebagai masyarakat yang mengamalkan seks bebas, ganas dan pencetus peperangan.

I just watched in a few hours ago.. I admit I was a little slow tongue.gif

I hesitated going to watch it in the local cinemas due to our censorship board..

(which did make a mess of cutting out all the lovemaking scenes and thus making the movie's emotional + characterisation a little detached).

Yeah, its a brainless testosterone action ride all the way. But MAN it was one heckuva cool ride.

For the first time, it was like watching a 2 hour long kickass video game intro - the sort that you wish would go on forever, ah such gratifying violence tongue.gif

Definitely doesn't compare to the likes of Gladiator. But sure as hell beats both Troy and Alexander flat.

4 out of 5 stars for the excellent choreography + effects.

Simply breathtaking detailedness IMHO and the fight scene choreography is superb in a US movie. I love the part where they severed the head and the blood spilt out u can see it dot by dot biggrin.gif damn shiok ... I think once the head severed more blood should come out la but then if it does it will not reach Malaysia tongue.gif

Very enjoyable 41/2 stars from me biggrin.gif the 1/2 coz the censorship cut out the making love part biggrin.gif

Ahaha.. okay.. I have to admit.. You're probably right tongue.gif

Minimal as it may have been, it would still have been SOMETHING. I didn't feel ANYTHING whatsoever throughout the show for the characters.. not even when the queen was spannared nor when Leonidas died.

But man, that queen is ONE HAWT queen nevertheless.

I think the Oracle part was a little too overdone though.

Will definitely be getting the DVD to catch what I've missed tongue.gif

Aiya.. the scene is necessary, so was the licking, it was meant to show that the ephos were a corrupted lot that desired sex and money... and also meant to disgust leonidis.. imagine if the oracle was an old wise lady like in the matrix talking to leonidis and convincing him not to fight, then we got no movie to see liao.

review frm comic-dom

QUOTE
A few months ago, I was having lunch with my dear friend Heidi MacDonald. She had just seen an advanced screening of 300 and wasn’t sure how she felt about the film. Now if you place two people on opposite ends of the political spectrum that would be Heidi and I. Even though I think she’s nuts we still love each other and always have a great time together. So (and I quote my dear friend) Heidi proclaims that “you would love it,” for as one critic put it, the film is “a Fascist’s dream.” The critic’s statement has since been repeated by many of his peers, but I don’t see the connection. What does defending your homes, ideals and family have anything to do with Fascism? It doesn’t. The simple fact of the matter is that the entire army of the Xerxes’ Persian empire invaded Greece with a force that comprised of Libyan, Egyptian, Ethiopian, Babylonian, Chaldean, Phoenician, Syrian, Assyrian, Palestinian, Armenian, Cilician, Cappadocian, Thracian, Parthian, Bactrian, Caspian, and even Indian warrior/slaves. An army of over 2 million men -- more men than in all of Greece for God Sakes!

Leonidas saw the danger, and knew of the coming the destruction, so he gathered a force of 300 Spartans and several hundred Thespians and, as most of the city-states’ politicians were busy debating whether or not to surrender, led them north to imminent slaughter but more importantly, immortality at the “Gates of Hell.” For it was to honor the sacrifice of this tiny fellowship that all of Greece mobilized and as I believe, saved the world. The war would continue for another year, but the battle cry of “no retreat, no surrender” pushed the now united Greeks to win the naval battle of Salamis and (as seen at film’s end) the ultimate defeat of Xerxes’ Army at Plataea, which was again lead by the Spartans.

Now imagine if all of Greece had fallen to Xerxes in 480 BC. Imagine the destruction of all Greek culture, their ideals and their way of life. There would never be an Alexander, or a Roman Empire either wouldn’t there? I’m a Christian and strong in my faith, but wonder that if there were no Roman Empire, is it fair to say there would be no Jesus Christ, at least as we know him today? I know that’s a lot to swallow, but it is a theory. At least one can surely argue that there would be no democracy. Remember, Xerxes was a king who sacked, pillaged and destroyed all native culture to the lands he conquered. So is it possible that had Leonidas stayed behind and the Greeks surrendered, that there would be no United States of America? If so and I don’t care how you feel about the US one way or another, I dare you to name one nation that has done more for greater-good of mankind.

That is why the film is breaking box-office records around the world – people do believe in the fighting oppression, conquest and slavery. Scott Lamky had the incredible opportunity to see the film premiere in Athens where the entire theatre repeatedly cheered out loud at all the great historical quotes (“Spartan, come back with your shield… Or on it!”) and the courage laid down by their forefathers. Man I wish I were there to experience that!

Aiya.. the scene is necessary, so was the licking, it was meant to show that the ephos were a corrupted lot that desired sex and money... and also meant to disgust leonidis.. imagine if the oracle was an old wise lady like in the matrix talking to leonidis and convincing him not to fight, then we got no movie to see liao.
*
I'm not sure im following you here. Whats wrong with the oracle in The Matrix? Why would a old woman in the place of a young half naked girl make it "...then we got no movie to see liao" ? The films where you expect to see young naked girls are called porn.

Never said that the scene was unnecessary tho. I said it was disturbing. The same way Leonidas found it disturbing.

Im just surprised at the approval of a lot of the posters here, and how some make it out to be the highlight of the show.

Maybe i shouldnt be surprised. Pre-adolescent with raging hormones and all that.

You dont get what he means. Wat he wants to say is:

If the oracle in 300 had been the one from The Matrix, she would have actually looked wise and knowledgeable (which is not what the film wants to portray her as), and Leonidas might have believed in her after all and not go into battle.

They chose a young, hot, naked girl surrounded by dirty priests to portray a society overly reliant upon those so-called 'priests'. They were shown to be corrupt, sex-crazy fiends. Leonidas knew they were full of shit and this was why he insisted on going into battle.

It's a movie!! Based on a GRAPHIC NOVEL (A sad excuse for a comic)!! A war that took place before Jesus was born!! A war between 300 awesomely sculpted abs Spartans and millions of Persians freaks (even George Bush is not that stupid)!! A war that could've been imaginary for all I know!!

So, please, for the love of God, can you guys let it go and just enjoy the movie?

if you look properly, the blood is actually animated. its pretty obvious in some scenes. they do it like that so it will look just like the comic.

A little too predictable and straight forward I would say.

The narration part was a bit overkill and made it sound fictional rather than history, because in the movie Leonidas was potrayed like a superman whom couldn't possibly die.

No doubt though that his army stood well and slaughtered the Persians massively that it angered Xerxes badly that Leonidas got decapitated and crucified (something the Iranian Xerxes culture seldom practice - scriptures describe Persians as men who honour warriors who fought bravely).

Troy was a little more realistic than this movie, even though the battle of troy may be fictional.

watched discovery channel documentary about the battle of the hot gates long time ago.If im not wrong apparently xerxes really pissed off because one of his relatives is in the immortal squad and got pwned by leonidas and after he killed the king they simply backed off greece right? cant remember that part in the documentary.

A lot of my female friends got turned on by the movie. Abs and all.

The movie is simple and straightforward. I personally prefered movies like Letters from Iwo or Flag of Our Fathers.

Watched it pretty late.
Me and my friends can't help but laugh all the way through the movie.
People in the cinema look at us as if come out from Tanjung Rambutan.

Remind us of too many internet memes from this movie.
Ppl in WOW like to yell "Tonite we dine in hell!!" ,"Spartaaaaa!!!" and stuff like that in the Battlegrounds. doh.gif

It's only a sequel in the spiritual sense.

QUOTE
With "300" scoring big bank at the box-office again in its second weekend ($127 million and still climbing), the inevitable question becomes - what of a sequel?

Of course a direct sequel is out of the question, but now Variety reports that Frank Miller is hard at work prepping an official to "300" by adapting another mythic tale from Greek history.

Which one though? Miller won't divulge details, and in any case is busy prepping to helm the "Sin City" sequel (due to begin filming inn June).

I guess it's going to be a prequel. The only other Greek/Spartan legend that is worthy of a movie would be the Battle of Marathon, which happened during Darius' (Xerxes' father) rule.

That is if Frank Miller continues to satiate the bloody audience's extremely senseless bloodlust

Actually, the rest of Greece is also having similar problems - Olympics was very close by, and they rather honor the Olympics than go to war.

Sequel to 300: 299 (since one of them survived)

Story Sypnosis

Leonidas, after his heroic stand in Thermopylae, arrives in hell along with his 298 fellows. They laugh in the desolate realm of Hades, and tell his men to conquer all of Hell. In a battle roar, they charge towards the throne of Hades.

But as they reach the courtyard, they hear glaring music beyond comprehension. The deep ryhtmic beats trample their hearts much like the great war elephants that the persians brought with them, but in a much different way. Curious, the band of 299 spartans enter the courtyard, to see...

A bunch of hip hop guys battling on the dance floor. The leader of one of the gang challenges Leonidas to a battle, and Leonidas almost kills his opponent before realizing the true meaning of a hip hop battle. Humiliated on the dance floor, and his men frustrated as all women in hell see them as geeks and refuse to bed them, they practice hard on breakdance, swearing revenge.

Let the battles begin again.

Curious, the band of 299 spartans enter the courtyard, to see...

no inspiring speeches, no creative war strategy, no character development, sigh even the plot is wafer thin, this movie is strictly visual feast...what a major disappointment

THIS IS AN IMPRESSIVE MOVIE. From the poster it never attracts me at all. But my friend who watched it say is a movie not to miss. So i watched. DAMN TRUE.

VISUALLY NICE. D blood splashing part althought look fake but it brings out the Action well. Fighitng scene is great.. With nice movement.. (unlike those LOTR etc which can only see people simply swinging their swords) The speech is good. It brings out the Semangat Patriotik. Acting n expression is good. BAD GUY LOOK GOOD.. like its character. An unexpected Good movie.

But the ORacle parts.. OUR MOVIE CENSORED A LOT. She looks sexy la.

300 spartans died. King Leonidas led 300 men = 300+1.

1 man got sent back, 301 -1 = 300

I m abit dissapointed on ppl who are saying this movies is not so good or poor and stuff like that... the theme of the movies is basicly about protecting your country and self honour... u dont need lengthy plots and excersive speech... u can get that from other movies... just go enjoy the bloody battles and flying limbs thumbup.gif
