i m planning to buy a new laptop. a Ultra portable laptop which allow me to suffer at anywhere. the model dat i target on is SONY tx series.

But today, Macpowerbook shake my mind..i start to love on the MAC os...laptop design...

Questions :
1. shall i let go windows OS n choose MAC ?

2. my main feature on my ideal laptop is ultra portable..but mac powerbook is abit bulky with size n weigth. i stil love the machine cause of the os n the spec..

You still can run Windows XP with Intel powered Macs.

All those reasons you never bought a Mac? Not anymore!

1) you can boot Win XP on an intel Mac.

2) ultraportable = cramped keyboard. Medium sized notebooks have better usability. besides, 1.5kg vs 2.2kg (intel macbook).. Ur a MAN, 700g difference no big deal lor..

Dude, i think you meant 'to surf (the internet)?'. No one would wanna suffer anywhere.

a mac is definitely sexier than a sony. and both are perfect for wireless internet surfing (assuming that's the major task u're gonna run on the machine) However, if you want ultra portable and if you're fine with the cramped keyboard, get a sony. if you like the LOOKS of mac os, get flyakiteOSX and install it on the sony.

but if you're looking for a whole new experience (and wouldn't mind the learning curve) get a macbook. mac os is as easy to use as windows, if not easier. i'd say it's gonna be worthwhile and would definitely turn you from a mac-hater to a mac-addict!

And price is no longer an excuse, spec to spec the price is actually same or lower than most other branded notebooks..

Furthermore I dont think apple notebooks are comparable to other cheap notebooks who claims very good after sales service, the apple notebook is far more superior in quality than them, while still maintaining excellent service..

Macs are just ... *beautiful* and gives you an entirely different experience in pc usage. Its like dining at a cosy restaurant with ambience and mood.

Also, its the shortest word in the market for computers.

Mac - 1 syllable
P-C / Note-book - 2 syllables.

Oh please stop the "I look down on the Windoze world" rant. Whilst the MacBooks are currently extremely compelling machines they are hardly the fastest/best that can be had. Intel integrated graphics? Count me out.

The MacBook Pro on the other hand weighs a ton and costs a bomb. Count me out too.

While I'd agree that OSX provides a lovely computing experience, XP is also an excellent computing platform.

I'd buy according to my projected use rather than subscribe to any misguided fanboyism.

always buy according to your usage. If you buy them for the design, cool factor, peer presure, pimp factoe, or so that you can be out of the normal crowd, sooner ot later you will find that decision is really lame. it just depends on how much you have to pay before you learn that.

yeah MAC is good i also drop XP but i didnt bring anywhere soo get a MAC mini ultra small desktop good n powerful ......

I got my first Apple (Blueberry flavoured iMac) 6 years ago.
I admit it was the cute factor that won me over.

Of course design matters. The iMac will go down in history as a masterpiece of design as well as the product that reversed Apple's expected slide into obsolescence. It however was not ONLY design that made the iMac a classic. The integrated design, cutting edge tech that we take for granted today: USB, built in optical drive, networking all seems like standard stuff today; but it was the iMac that helped define the standard.

Design was part of it. But it was not the only part.

Similarly with the MacBookPro (and MacBook): It's heavy and thick. NOT a classic design IMHO.

Hi..just wanna tumpang thread . Just wondering there are many software that doesn't support mac right? (including games and so on) .But some of them say that nowadays most of the software are supported by mac. so im quite blur...which is true?

Yes its supported by Intel macs , as you could boot into WIndows and play those games or you could run something like Virtual PC ontop of the Mac to play around with windows programs....Now you could even Run Office XP directly on Mac as well.....

very well said...buy what you like most. but if you have the extra cash and don't mind trying something new...try the mac...actually if you ask me since both machines are almost of the same price, i would get the macbook pro because whatever it is, i can still run windows when i need it..at the same time try something interesting and different.

java..you mean java programming, not sure, i do not think so...plug-in surely got...but if you wanna do java programming, you can use boot camp to run windows. flash, yes there is. text pad, there's os x's own version..am sure you can find something better also off the net.

The Java SDK 1.5 comes standard with the install of the OS. In fact, I do all my J2EE development work on a Powerbook.

Also, Adobe and Macromedia always releases for the mac first, then for windows after that. Text pad, well, there's heaps of other better text editors out there, like BBEdit, SKEdit and so on.

On the features, good question. Never used Textpad b4. But well, if its meant to be a programmers' editor, then the features should mainly be the same.

Also, if its a programmer's editor, then well, a text file is a text file lar. Format's all the same, regardless of if u edit the same file using notepad, vim, textpad, komodo, bbedit, u name it.

i find it's more appropriate to say that it's less susceptible to those problems but they're not without them.

even as a Windows-user i'm not infected by spyware / virus - it's all about the user, not the OS.

as for your points 1 to 11 (other than 5 & 6) - it's hardly any different from a Windows-based laptop.
1. cool design is still there
2. Windows XP is still user-friendly
3. applications - need i say more about this?
4. internet ready too
7. you can also get original Windows OS when you buy a laptop.
8. USB devices are plug and play as well
9 & 10 are stupid reasons, therefore i shall not compare
11. it's cool to be able to switch but in the end you'll be sticking to one unless your switching actually serves a good purpose.

all in all - those 11 reasons are nothing compared to what MacDaNife said -


furthermore, spending a huge sum of moolah just to look cool and impress people is just plain dumb.

before getting a mac - seriously consider what you intend to do with it, and whether do you really need a mac to do it (or does a mac help you do it better) or just a normal notebook with decent specs and half the cost would do the job.

personally - i like MAC because of the GarageBand application, along with that nice keyboard (the one with black & white keys la). other than that - i can't think of anything i can't do on Windows / Linux...........yet............ unless someone introduces me a GarageBand-like application for Windows - then i won't get a mac already.


EDITED : if my purpose is just to surf the net, IM and E-mail - MAC with it's OS would be nice. however being a budget-conscious person i'd rather get the cheapest small note-book i can find minus the OS and install Linux on it.

yea, talking about cool design, imho, the sony vaio sz series is really really beautiful and way slimmer and lighter than the mb and mbp. it is so slim yet stills integrates a dvd-rw. one should really go down to the shop and play with it. actually what you all said is very very true, goldfries, andriel, macdanife. if you go thru the mb/mbp thread, someone asked an opinion on getting a mac, i did state the pros and cons, next thing you know all these fanatics started blasting me childishly, sorry, but the fact is that the mac is not perfect, yet..so is windows and linux. it never suites everyone, some may like it while some may feel it could have been better if they improved certain things. anyhow, i shall state the reason why i chose a mac and still use windows.

1. the mac os is very nice and user friendly, i know xp too is kinda the same, but i wanted something different after all these years.
2. less viruses and spyware, note : less, NOT completely none. i do surf a lot of sites and download lotsa stuff and share lots of files and materials. honestly i am sick of getting infected by viruses. to date, i have had to reformat my windows thrice since 2003 due to virus attacks.
3. productivity suites e.g. iwork can produce beautiful eye-catching materials.
4. other than that i can't think of anything else...basically i can do everything in a mac in a windows, maybe even more.
5. also, i was taken back by the beautiful looking graphics in os x.
6. i wanted to be different than most people.

anyhow, when i got my mac, i did encounter some major crashes till the whole system stopped working, i had to press the power button sooo long, even ending the process in activity monitor did not stop it. also, it did take me some time to get used to the OS and i do hate the fact that it STILL does have very minor allignment problems in office documents when viewed in windows pc's. do take note that majority of the world still uses PC and you can't just shun them as you will need to share materials with them. what if you have to do a presentation somewhere else in a pc, or distribute files to corporate clients who still are on windows? also, the interface in office was rather old, equivalent to office 97 in windows. some graphics turned out distorted when inserted in word when you do not find the same problem in windows. also, when you copy something off the net and paste it in excel, the formatting never follows like in windows. anyway, i hope these problems get settled in the next version of office.

anyhows, like eldan says, once you got a mac, you will never look back, why...you may ask when i did post some frustrating moments i faced : it is so nice, simple, easy and fun to use. there is just something in it that is so attractive. also, now with boot camp i shall not hesitate to get another mac as i can run windows natively.

to the thread starter, my vote goes to the mbp, reason : you get the best of both worlds, the mbp does have good specs. however, i do recommend that you wait a little while and get it with leopard, so that you do not need to purchase a new os again next 2-3 months time which will easily cost you rm500. also, who knows they might release a core 2 duo version...

i guess when eveyrone's using windows, and u have mmeorised all windows keyboard shortcuts by heart, and your native specialised, customised software only runs in windows environment, why d u need a mac?

btw, mac, windows, linux, whatever. it serves its own purpose. like some has said, spending obscene amount of money just trying to look cool is stupid.

as for the threadstarter, pls refrain from using the word ULTRAPORTABLE. ultraportie means: a ULV Pentium + NAND flash drive - no hdd / fdd / cf / dvd drive + 10" XGA screen with 70% of its mass as battery : all this will operate at least 15 hrs. that's what ultraportable really is

Call it dumb if you want to, but from experience, a Mac is very useful for attracting attention. From a business perspective, this can be important indeed. There's quite a number of cases where during a presentation, I've already gotten the attention of everybody in the room by just taking out my Powerbook.

Thus, big deal if a Powerbook costs maybe 3-4 or even 5k more than other machines. If it helps grab attention to my presentation that can help secure a contract, then the price difference is just chicken feet.

Dumb or not, there IS business value in even such a trivial thing.

my statement was targetting at people who just feel-good to impress, but with no purpose........... other than to feel good and get some praise (which look like what points 9 and 10 are implying) - that to me is plain stupid.

but the way you put it was different from what he (the person i quoted) put it. and there's no doubt about what you said - i whole-heartedly agree if you put it that way as that to me is to impress with a purpose.

all in all you post adds to the fact that the purchase of a mac be based on a (or some) purpose. not just "i want to look good" but "i want to look good so that i can do better".

however when it comes to impression, even a sleekly designed notebook from sony, fujitsu or even that red-ferrari notebook from who-knows-where have an equal (or better, or worse.........depending on the person you meet) chance of leaving an impression. of course i won't deny that generally macs do get attention more easily than others.

MAC got come wif remote soo i can sit at the bed enjoy my music and DVD at Front Row

i no need wake up go to mute my speaker i just press from remote ......

i know Win XP MCE can do the same but in KL u think how much cost u .... to have the same feature .... for me MAC is more to multimedia ...

mac is more easy to used .... but depends some ppl dont like it

i'm eyeing on
1. Mac Mini for Home-Theatre system
2. MacBook (or even older iBook) for my presentations.

i've used quite a number of laptops, eg compaqs, ibms, acers, dells - till date i've never been more impressed by the display of an ibook....... donno if still can get those white guys, i like them.

the reason i'm thinking of a MacBook for presentation sake, being a designer and having to show sample works- showing it on an MacBook would definitely be more designer-like (and yeah, more importantly the screen).

currently presentations are done on a low-end Dell due to budget constraints, during that time of purchase (many months back), the mac was considered but the lack budget took it off the list. Mac would be the upcoming purchase.

iMac too has a remote, even the MB and MBP..not sure about Mac Pro

no Apple Remote for Mac Pro.

those over than RM7k got remote.

except for mac pro as said by wei. if i am not mistaken he owns one.

wrong. low end Macbook RM4k+ has a remote, RM2k+ Mac Mini also has a remote. But a RM9k Mac Pro don't have one. I wonder will there be a Cinema Display update that have remote bundled.

Yeah, i was suprised when i got my macbook and found out it came with remote. The only downside it cant put the Macbook to sleep / shutdown, or set sleep timer when playing MP3.

Or can it, just that I dunno how? Any ideas?

can i use back my macromedia flash CD(that i install in PC) installed in iMac?
