My last purchase of CD player was in year 2003, a brand new CD17mkIII. I then traded an Electrocomponient EC4.5 pre amp with an CD6000KI. No regret. 17 years had passed now, I bought the CD6004 to answer my curiosity on how modern Dac CS4398 and HDAM-SA2 can do in Marantz mid level CD player. A junior in my hifi system but it is actually an almost 10 years old product by Marantz.

The CD6004 do sound quite different from my other two senior Marantzs. I need to undergo ear running-in before I can conclude differences among three of them (2000 vs 2003 vs 2011). I am glad after ran in (my ear, about a week), now I start to enjoying it. It is dynamic, steady and confident. A little dark, quiet and dense. Solid with good body. Good depth and width too. It play complex music with ease without throwing everything out, eg, soundtrack of Lord of the Ring, Tittanic. The swing is good. Sudden puase between note do with confident without hesitation, eg JB project, Woods albums. The other two players however excel in more relax, harmonious and growing decay with more air around. I thought the CD6004 might sound too dark but turn out it able to attract good amount of air around voices and instrument from albums, eg, Rikie Lee Jones Pop pop, Diana Krall Turn up the Quiet. The vocal got very good presence up there, meaty, thick and sweet with nice detail like throat noise. The high is just nice to my liking detail extended when called for without brightness and sharpness. Vocal without artificial sibilance. A nice player for classical music too because it play loud with excellent dynamic, grip and control. Overall, I am happy smile.gif

thanks for the response. i'm still not sure if i should buy a dedicated cd player.

but in my system i'm quite sure playing cd, although with bluray player, sounds better than playing hires flac files.

interesting comment about the usb port poor audio quality. for my yamaha r-n803, i realised the usb port is not good also.

i have to use the usb port of bluray player and optical out to the yamaha receiver for better sound. quite troublesome and also strange.

I bet CD6006 will be better in RBCD and also USB playback too due to its dedicated sound only design rclxms.gif

I am with Chanhin to suggest go from 600x, at least from 6004. Between CD500x and 600x is not just connectivity but also the overall analogue circuitry and power supply which deffirential them sonically. Even though both series used same CS4398 but that is just part of the story.

Been listening to the SA8005 for more than a month now. I am still stereo old school hardcopy CD and some SACD guys tongue.gif. To me it is really a good sounding player and as a Dac. Detail yet musical. The tonality, voice and instrumental timbre is spot on. Great bass with excellent mid to upper mid which able to unfold plenty of musical detail from an album. Listen to OST like lord of the ring, brave heart, gladiator, titanic is simply enveloping. Klemperer and Karajan Wagner orchestra music on EMI GRC50 remastered sound majestic thru it. karajan La Boheme vocal voices are all full and dramatic. Stereophile CD Intermezzo: Works for Piano by Brahms never sound so good as now. I was wondering if I could detect any justifiable significant change from CD6004. Yes, I do. It is a keeper.

In 1992 I bought a Marantz CD player (cost about RM1300), but I don't feel any special (sound quality) compared to other brand like Technics, Pioneer.

I opened it's casing to have a look of the inside, I saw it's output stage is just a NE5532 (audio operational amplifier IC).

The NE5532 cost about RM4 in 1992, today RM2 only in shopee.

Can you imagine, the sound you listened, come from electric signal that has been amplified by that NE5532, and this NE5532 cost only RM4.

IC is always cheap. The actual cost can as low as cents. Anyway, op amp is still widely used in low to high end player today. The sound quality can vary from none to significant all depend on what the designer or company want to achieve. Sound tweaking is black art too which is also highly subjective. Marantz had used their HDAM module to replace IC opamp since 1992 for their higher range series. Lower model still used op amp. HDAM is one of the key module that keep Marantz house sound where some like it and enjoying it. Today, their HDAM-SA2 module seem significantly improved the overall sound quality than the HDAM.

hdam not for headphone only ?

Initially HDAM was just for CDP output stage. Now used often as an upgrade in their newer or upgraded models with headphone out.

New Marantz CD6007 is out now to replace the CD6006.
The USB is supporting DSD file now.
DAC chip is changed from CS4398 to AKM4490 with two selectable filters.
The most significant changes I can see from the picture is the DAC chip now is located in the audio board at the right side in the picture (Instead of data board - the center board) and beefier HDAM-SA2 module compared to CD6006.
Hopefully this latest one will improve in timbre tonality and upper mid high region.

Anyone here using bare wire connection on both speaker and amp side?
I first tried on the speaker side got positive effect then recently tried on amp side got significant level up of overall sound even more. Worth a try if using none exotic cable and plug.

Bire wire is better as plugs just add another layer of connection

This seem make sense in my setup. With bare wire on both end, sound is lot more fresher, better decay and macro/microdynamic. Music and vocal turn out more flesh and blood. Because of that I can reposition my speaker again to further optimize the sound.

I am having 2x system with biwiring.. with great results..  But when I tried using just one pair without biwring, I should consider myself demanding with sensitive ears, but still cannot tell the differences in sound.
*
You may need to check your cable plug termination condition. The soldering or welding job can bring significant effect on the sound due to signal passes thru the joint.

I was not able to hear any different when my cable with locking banana plug on my bi-wireable speaker either thru stock jumper or upmarket jumper wire for many years. Until my curiosity caused me to try bare wire connection. I removed the plug from my cable and I tried on the speaker end first and listened for few months then follow by amp side. Now I am using bi-wire. I am plenty sure the improvement happened on my setup is not psychological effect. My cable is mogami 3104 which I had been using for many years. I think if speaker cable is not audiophile exotic expensive type can try try.

The biggest improvement I see on the 6007 is dac chip now same board with audio board. Previous model the dac is on digital board then jumper wire to audio board. The sound might shifted a bit due to AMK vs Cirrus.
