Hey guys, I'm currently looking for an amp now.

http://www.superfi.co.uk/c-170-integrated-...Brand%7CMarantz

The PM7005 and PM8005 are on sale here in UK for RM2700 and RM3500 respectively (and superfi is an authorised reseller), just wanna ask is it worth the risk to buy it now and bring it back to Malaysia in 2 months time. And as I have no passive speakers here I can't test it at all, so it's just gonna sit here and if it's lemon unit then ggwp sayonara. Never purchased an amp like this before so I'm not quite sure if I should pay extra attention to this, although I've never used a single warranty on any electronics before.

Intend to pair it with ELAC B6 (plan to purchase in Malaysia as they are too heavy to carry back), and similar price can only get me PM6005 / 6006 in Malaysia, which many say is relatively weak to drive the power hungry B6.

Well just looking for opinions..

I drive my floorstanding speakers using PM6005. I think it has enough to power ELAC B6.

my 2 cents and if using rounding mechanism my 2 cents worth nothing.

I see what you did there with the joke.

It worries me a bit as a lot of people says the PM6005 is not powerful enough for floor standing speaker. Well I feel better. So not worth the risk and hassle after all.

I don't know where I read this but I find this funny too.
Floor standing speakers is like Toyota Camry.
Pair with PM6005 is like 1.8 litre engine for Camry, can drive but might feel insufficient when need that power.
And PM8005 is like 2.5 engine.

Don't you worry too much brother, if not enough juice to power your speaker you can always buy power amp later. or you can go pre and power amp way but you have to add more moolah.

Looked at style laser and if I looked at the right stuff pre and power cheapest pun 8k ady, too much for now lol. Considering my initial budget was 2k looking for simple powered speakers like Audioengine A5+ then slowly kena poison.

If only money is not a problem dry.gif
Buying a PM8005 in UK vs buying a PM6005 in Malaysia
Every time when I almost pull the trigger, the service and repair issue came to my mind again.
Pretty sure the local shop will be reluctant to take in a 'grey import' for repair cry.gif

Even if I were to push my budget up to be able to purchase PM8005 in Malaysia, the idea of pairing a 6k+ amp to a 2k- speaker bothers me hmm.gif Somehow I feel looking for a more expensive and efficient speaker to pair with a cheaper amp is more sensible to do. i.e. 4k amp 4k speaker.

I'm in accounting though laugh.gif

But it seems the 50:50 amp speaker spending doesn't rly holds in practice. more like 66% amp 33% speaker based on what I've read so far.

Back to the UK8005 vs MY6005 dilemma.

So what speakers would you pair with PM8005 based on the 66% : 33% split?
*
I assume you're asking me. I started looking at ELAC B6 before finding a suitable amp to power it, but many says its inefficient and requires more power (hence more money for amp), that brought PM8005 in mind (with the relatively cheap price here in UK).
Else I would just get the PM6005 and look elsewhere for more efficient speaker (can increase budget for speaker then).
Will go to RicherSounds some time next week to have a look.

Actually the PM6005 is also cheap here at RM1.4k, but the indicated price for the coming PM6006 is RM2.4k (closer to M'sia PM6005 price). Maybe they are clearing to make way for new models.

As I can't find any hifi shop here that carries both Marantz amp and ELAC speaker, it would be tough to decide even if I pay the shop a visit. Though general consensus is bigger, more powerful, more expensive = better. The closest competitor to the B6 in that shop is Dali Zensor 3.

Any tips for demoing amps?

What I read on the other hand is to spend more on the speakers, not the amp or cables...a bit confused  confused.gif
Anyway, either way those are just general rule of thumb. It should satisfy one and only one ultimate criterion. That's to sound good to your ears. When it melts you / feel the skin orgasm then you've found it...

On the other hand, I translated a Japanese site reviewing PM6006. States that the peak current is improved by 42%. I guess this means more "attack"?

Will go for demo tomorrow.
1) get PM6005 here, speaker options: BW 685 S2, KEF Q300, ELAC B6
2) get PM8005 here, speaker option pretty much limited to ELAC B6 unless I lose control bruce.gif

So far I can't find reason for PM6006, do or die lol.
Discounted PM6005: RM1.4k
Coming PM6006: RM2.4k
Discounted PM8005: RM3.5k
Converted UK price.

Should go for B&W. You won't regret

Yeah 6005+685S2 is my first choice now.
Even if the UK PM6005 have any problem in future, no need headache as its not as costly. Maybe can take it as an opportunity to upgrade heh.

Went to demo the PM6005 + KEF Q300, harsh, bright, thin is all I can say. Power wise it is pretty good.
They didn't have PM8005 in stock, so I requested the Q300 to be paired with Cambridge Audio CXA80 to see whether the extra power is necessary, overall impression still the same, so I just went with the PM6005.

Out of topic: officially crossed the Q300 from my options. Although the guy says that pair doesn't have much playback time, but I think the general characteristic is not my taste.

Edit: i plug the RCA into phono jack, no wonder my headphone sound weird lol. Changed them to the recorder jack and it's normal now. Using the amp as an eq for my headphone in the meantime rclxms.gif

q300 positioned too close together?

Would not say close, there's a TV in between, 2 metres I believe.

The sales guy did mention both amp and speakers are on the bright side though.

Q300 is a very bright speaker without additional woofer. PM6005 built-in DAC also very bright.

Very bright speaker + very bright DAC = harsh

One of the quick solution is to use external DAC. Once have the NA8005, then it is okay. However with Q300, maybe you can try those slower (maybe cheaper) DAC to compensate.
*
I didn't use the 6005's DAC though

Phone - OPPO HA2 (as DAC) - 3.5mm to phono - PM6005 - Q300
