My last purchase of CD player was in year 2003, a brand new CD17mkIII. I then traded an Electrocomponient EC4.5 pre amp with an CD6000KI. No regret. 17 years had passed now, I bought the CD6004 to answer my curiosity on how modern Dac CS4398 and HDAM-SA2 can do in Marantz mid level CD player. A junior in my hifi system but it is actually an almost 10 years old product by Marantz.

The CD6004 do sound quite different from my other two senior Marantzs. I need to undergo ear running-in before I can conclude differences among three of them (2000 vs 2003 vs 2011). I am glad after ran in (my ear, about a week), now I start to enjoying it. It is dynamic, steady and confident. A little dark, quiet and dense. Solid with good body. Good depth and width too. It play complex music with ease without throwing everything out, eg, soundtrack of Lord of the Ring, Tittanic. The swing is good. Sudden puase between note do with confident without hesitation, eg JB project, Woods albums. The other two players however excel in more relax, harmonious and growing decay with more air around. I thought the CD6004 might sound too dark but turn out it able to attract good amount of air around voices and instrument from albums, eg, Rikie Lee Jones Pop pop, Diana Krall Turn up the Quiet. The vocal got very good presence up there, meaty, thick and sweet with nice detail like throat noise. The high is just nice to my liking detail extended when called for without brightness and sharpness. Vocal without artificial sibilance. A nice player for classical music too because it play loud with excellent dynamic, grip and control. Overall, I am happy smile.gif

my floorstanding pair just placed 1 meter apart laugh.gif lack of space i will clear out pc stuff soon.
with pure direct we know the voice is always nicer, but i cant go loud as both treble & bass are heavvy making other ppl annoyed.

using low volume also no good result from a marantz compact size receiver (50wpc) to work with this speaker.
daily i must -10db on EQ, then raise the volume till the mid drivers are well feed.
by this level both tweeter & bass woofer are working toned down.

so my combination today is:
bass response cut = 40hz (choices are 40, 60, 80, 100)
i felt less energy waste on very low bass. mid opens up easily.
60hz affect some noticeable bass. not my taste tongue.gif
80hz, 100hz result same as above.

bass boost = on.
i cant imagine this is a useful cheat code for reducing bass while provide kick feel.
did not cause boom becos EQ

EQ bass -8db / treble -2db
adjust to accompany improved mids rclxms.gif

bi-amp = on
overall better than original jumper plate. not true biamp
able to change bass cut individually at each spk A, spk B
just the timing will become missed/ off slightly so i give them both same poin 40hz

wah, big floorstanding speaker only 1m apart! My bookshelf speaker already maxed out 1.5m due to space limitation but still feel the needs for wider separation.
Then your system cannot hear the stereo separation effect lor?

correct. it was no stereo separation at all.
everything come from front direction only, its either inside or outside (foreground /background like that).
i sit near field summore.

after i did above adjustments on marantz, i obtain a bit of "surrround feel" from two channels. hahaha so impressed.

so far its zero toe angle, i will play with toe in soon!
