NOS tubes very troublesome to source la, have to import from US and all, and expensive too. That's why slowly use la. Any suggestions where to buy tubes in Malaysia? For darkvoice 336i la.



Hehe, I think my problem is the bass as tight as i like it to be la. Hopefully improve more over burn-in la. Otherwise overall very good.

Oh ya... One more thing, I don't get why people rave so much about the soundstage... I think it's on par with the AD900 only... hmmmm someone with golden ears should come help me do an A-B comparison when I get back...

hell yes u do! just kidding bud . all kidding aside, i agree that finding a synergistic amp will be of utmost importance for optimal performance. after building my 1st DIY amp specifically to drive my W5k, i can honestly say that it completely changed my initial neutral impression of the importance of amplification.

FWIW i hear the K701 (together with the HD650) scales the most with complementing ancillary components. however the only AKG that interests me is the K1k. indeed im seeking (albeit passively) to aquire a pair if it ever comes my way.

have you tried playing some classical pieces on your K701?

Yeah, That's what I'm doing man, throwing all sorts of classical pieces and soundstage stuff on, hoping to be impressed Oh, the bass resonance track on Chesky's Ultimate Demonstration Disc is superb on the K701. The 'twang' and reverb of the double bass is just 'wow'!
I just heard some bells on the FARR FARRR back reaches of the orchestra on my CD. Impressed by the details and depth of soundstage. Wow...

After having so much headphones. Which one impress you most?

Haha cannot decide la, each of the upper-end ones have their own characteristics... But I think so far, from my headphones, the ranking is as so:

MX300<PX100<X3/SR60<SR80<AD900/MS2i/K701

Haven't really sat down to compare the K701 with the rest but liking it a lot so far. AD900 and MS2i have quite different sound signatures so can't really compare them, although I preferred my AD900 most of the time (except for more intimate jazz/rock tracks where I use the MS2i). It's really an under-rated headphone, the AD900.

I've also tried the RS-2, HD650, KSC75, K501, W1000, and D2000 during a recent head-fi meet here.

If include these, maybe the list will be something like this:

MX300<PX100<X3<KSC75<SR60<SR80

The other upper end phones, cannot really compare. But here's a little summary:
MS2i<RS2 - Overall improvement on RS2 in detail, bass quality etc
D2000/W1000/HD650 have a warmer/bassier presentation compared to K501/AD900 (not to my liking)

Oh yeah, and I tried Yuin PK-1 too... And I think it's over-rated. Not impressed at all

I can tell you the K1000 is like a Lamborghini, lovely to own, and not too difficult to do so but indeed very expensive to maintain.

How does ATH A900 compare to AD900 then? Open headphones normally sounds better with the same price range is it?

Difficult to maintain? How so? I had the impression that you just have to recable it, maybe make it balanced, and then get a good amp (it seems Darkvoice 337 goes well with it) for it. Is that right? Or are there other things you have to do?

I've never heard the ATH-A900 before. But the AD900 is significantly more pricey than the A900.

My K701 never fails to impress me too. Its so different when compared to my ex SR80. tz3ling, may I know what is your source and headamp for your K701?

Headamp - Musiland MD-10 built-in headamp (still burning-in la), Darkvoice 336i (RCA 6SN7, and Svetlana 6H13C tubes)

My SR60 has been left sitting on the table for quite some time now... Totally outclassed by the MS2i and other stuff

The K1000 would shit on the Darkvoice. It requires some power amp, at a pretty penny that may cost more than itself, i.e. maintenance.

wah, tempted to try the 336i! Before I got my hands on my Canamp, I have shortlisted the 336i and 332; but my "painful" experience on the LD2+ kindda hold me back from getting any valve amps to pair with my K701. So which one do you prefer? the MD-10 built-in headamp module or the 336i?

I wanna try the Canamp la, thinking of getting a solid-state. I haven't had much time with the K701 on the 336i yet. I'll let you know when I get back to KL and have a bit more time on the 336i. K701 doesn't sound that bad on the built-in module actually.

when will you be back in Malaysia? Maybe we can have a small K701 gathering (yeahs4.1 interested? ). I wanna audition the 336i!

Added: Good for you, the stock Zhaolu headamp is seriously "unbearable!"
