from what i can read, nitro is supposed to be highly explosive, wouldn't that be a detriment to higher octane in eliminating pre-detonation?

Nitro is indeed explosive. However i have never heard of it being used in automotive.
Not to be mistaken with Nitrous (nitrous oxide N2-O). Which is also flamable, but not explosive as Nitro (NO2, Like nitroglycerin in dynamite)
