PETALING JAYA: Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin has apologised to Vietnamese football fans over the actions of a group of Malaysian thugs who attacked them during the closing stages of the AFF Suzuki Cup first-leg semi-final tie in Shah Alam on Sunday.

Khairy said that while he was waiting for the official report from the police and the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM), he accepted and saw with his own eyes the attack on the Vietnamese fans.

“There is no excuse for such violent behaviour. More so as they are our guests. Is this the way we treat guests? It doesn’t matter if they are here on holiday or are working here, this isn’t Malaysian culture, “ he said in a statement on his Facebook page, early Monday morning.

Vietnam won the first leg of the AFF Suzuki Cup semifinal 2-1.

Khairy said those responsible should be aware that the Malaysian fans could be on the receiving end of hostilities in the second leg in Hanoi, Vietnam.

“Isn’t this provocation and poses a security risk to Malaysian fans in Hanoi?

“Because these thugs will not apologise and there will be no response from FAM yet, I apologise to the Vietnamese fans who were attacked. I will ask the police to investigate the matter.

“These violent fans do not represent Malaysia. My sincere apologies on behalf of Malaysia for the actions of these small number of irresponsible thugs.

“We hope for a great second leg in Hanoi, competitive on the field and friendly in the stands,” he said.

FAM get show cause letter for crowd trouble

PETALING JAYA: The Asean Football Federation (AFF) have issued the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) with a show cause letter following the crowd trouble during the Suzuki Cup first leg semi-final between Malaysia and Vietnam.

The match which was held at the Shah Alam Stadium was marred by crowd trouble after Malaysia went down 2-1.

A group of Malaysian fans attacked the visiting fans after Malaysia conceded their second goal and photographs of the attack which left several Vietnamese supporters injured went viral.

The incident was the second incident involving crowd trouble during an international match this year.

FAM were fined US$10,000 (RM35,000) by football governing body FIFA last week after a friendly match between Malaysia and the Philippines on March 1 was disrupted after Malaysian fans let off smoke bombs and lit flares during the match.

AFF secretary general Datuk Azzuddin Ahmad said he was upset with the incident.

“Winning and losing is part of the game and we should accept the result instead of being sore losers, “said Azzuddin.

“I’m disappointed with the incident ... the other countries in the region don’t have this problem.

“I don’t want to speculate on what punishment will be meted out ... it can be a fine or a suspension.”

FAM have seven days to respond and the AFF competition committee will deliberate before deciding on any action.

FAM secretary general Datuk Hamidin Mohd Amin meanwhile confirmed that police have arrested five people for their involvement in the fracas.

“A police report had been made on the incident and the police are expected to make more arrests,” said Hamidin when contacted from Hanoi yesterday.

“We have written to the Vietnam Football Association (VFA) and Vietnam embassy to apologise over the incident.

“We have spoken to the VFA and they have assured that security will be paramount in the second leg.”

Meanwhile in Johor Baru, the Johor Football Association (JFA) has banned a group of hooligans who called themselves the Inter Johor Firms (IJF) from entering the Larkin Stadium for life.

The statement also said that the association made the decision not because of the incident at the Shah Alam Stadium on Sunday but both the JFA president Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim and the JFA strongly against any organisation that promotes hooliganism.
