Hi, I'm having problems connecting to Xbox Live. I use an 8 port ethernet whatchamacallit splitter and apparently I now have to set up my DNS manually.
Whenever I test my connection on the Xbox it says I've failed the DNS test. Can someone out there help me with this please?
Cheers.

I'm quite computer illiterate, sorry. How do I do that? I mean check my DNS.

bro. your internet.. if you are using PC and WinXP just open your CMD
and type "ipconfig /all" it will show you many ips.
on the other hand if you are on linux or mac or any unix based PC
type "netstat -r"
It will tell you which one is the DNS
Once u get that DNS, use that DNS on your Xbox 360. It should be okay.

I hear that could potentially present a problem as well.

wait.. are you using Internet Connection Sharing on your windows? You don't have a router do you? Only a switch, and the modem is directly connected to your PC?

I thought switch doesnt do anything besides route connections, no PPPoE or stuff like that (needed to connect to streamyx), if you intend to do like that, I suggest you buy a router NOT a switch, because you can use the router to automatically connect to internet for you and connect everything to the router, then 360 online should be no sweat just connect and go. weeee Don't forget to post your GT when you get your live gold account (so we can play also )

As it stands it really does look like I'm going to have to splash out on a router. That's my last resort as I've just spent a lot to get the Xbox etc etc.
There's got to be a way to fix this! Driving me nuts.

Why dont you let the 360 do the dialing? connect your phone line to the modem, pull the ethernet cable from the modem to your 360, and set up the PPPoE dialer from within 360's Network blade? Or do you still want to have internet connection on your PC as well? If you're tight on abudget, i suggest you try what i posted, but you'll have to keep swapping the ethernet cable everytime you wanna switch between the 360 and your Pc, but it will cost you nothing.

stringfellow: I reckon what you said is the only way for me to connect to Live right now but if my PC isn't hooked up to the net, the other PCs at home are disconnected as well! Heh it's very annoying.

am using the same configuration as you. My PC is the gateway, the other PCs are connected through my hub as well as my 360. But all IP are manually assigned. This is what I do:
My PC - the Gateway (It has two NICs) one connected to internet (NIC A) and the other to hub (NIC B).
NIC A will have its IP assigned automatically by ISP. Where as NIC B, you will have to assigned the IP yourself. I set NIC B as 192.168.0.1 (this is your gateway address) and the rest computer should have the same IP as this 192.168.0.XXX (change only XXX to any incremental no.)
Computer B, C, D, E and 360 will have IP like this:
Computer B: 192.168.0.2 Computer C: 192.168.0.3 Computer D: 192.168.0.4 Computer E: 192.168.0.5 Xbox 360: 192.168.0.6
Each of this PC (B, C, D, E and 360) will have Gateway IP as 192.168.0.1 and the DNS should be the IP you find in in Network Connection Details of the NIC A.
Hope this will help.

I haven't tried doing what necromanser asked me to try but I've actually manage to connect to the internet via the Xbox BUT I can no longer use the internet on the PC. Everytime I try to use the internet it says something about "my username yadda yadda domain yadda yadda". I'm not sure what's wrong with it. Not sure if this is a step forward or backward.
