Anyone interested in buying a used Sram x5 RD?
I'm selling one cause it's not compatible with my shifter.

Feeling gatal to upgrade the stock V brakes in my Tern Link D8 but not willing to fork out too much.
Any comments on the Avid FR 5 levers and perhaps Single digit 3 brakes? They seem rather affordable.

And would I really feel a difference?

Oh ya shimano Deore v brakes. I think I remember you offered to sell to me back then when I came to your place. Hmm it's a bit out of budget for me though cause I've got two bikes to mod.
Since sifu etigge says the avids are decent I shall go for it then!

Went out for a 20km ride on a cdm Dahon archer mp 18.
Still sweating as I post but want to share my experience.
Bike is stock as bought from the store.
The rottolo wheels are ok on smooth stretches.
Front end is stiff with road bumps going straight into the hands/wright.
My recovered broken wrist sore. Worst than riding mtb.
The ride position is very upright and very enjoyable on straight smooth roads.

Any recommendations to soften the front end?

Well there are a few things you can do to lessen the shock and bumpiness from your front.
First things first were you wearing cycling gloves? Cycling gloves with gel padding would help reduce numbness in your wrists.
Another great way to reduce shock would be to change your tyres to thicker ballon tyres, notably Schwalbe Big Apples. Never used them before but I've heard it really makes the ride a lot more comfortable.

Sorry guys noob question.
I read in forums where people advise to grease your joints, or bearings or between the shim and seat tube.
Do we use chain lube or something else?
Do they mean the thick gooey stuff when they say grease?

I kinda have problems with the seat post sliding down after riding for awhile unless I tighten the seat post clamp like hell. Which I feel I shouldn't have to cause never had this problem before.

Ok got another noob question for the sifus here. I am currently running a SRAM X4 RD on my tern link d8 (thanks etigge!). My wife and I are tinkering with the thought of changing to double chainrings.
My question is : would a SRAM x4 FD accommodate say, a 53/39T crank? I've read online in some other overseas forums and they said it wouldn't work.
Which brings me to my next question. Would it be then possible to change the RD to a road bike RD for my wide range 11-32T cassette? From what I know the biggest road bike cassettes are like 11-28T at most.

I went back and read sifu etigge's posts and I've seen him using shimano road RDs like tiagra and sora. Are you using a wide range cassette as well? If it really works I would prefer to change the entire setup to a road groupset then, instead of having some weird hybrid MTB rear and Road front setup lol.

First off, thanks for taking the time to answer my long question with an even longer answer lol!
So in other words, if I want to maintain using sram x4 RD I would have to find a different model FD and FD shifter such as microshift/SRAM/shimano right?
I'm really reluctant to change the largest sprocket from 32T to 30T... Haha!

Another noob question. If say I already have an X4 left shifter which shifts from 1-3, would it be compatible with a road FD? Since it's kinda universal anyway..

Yes, you can use the 3 speed front shifter for the 2 chainring cranks. You set the limit on the FD and the shift won't go to position 3, that's all. So, you basically only needs the double chainring, the FD and the adapter and off course the extra cable and housing.  icon_rolleyes.gif

Thanks again! You're a life saver! That really answers all my confusion.
The hunt for the crankset, FD and FD adapter starts now.
Cable should already be attached to the shifter, so I guess just the housing then.

Is it really possible to just add a second chainring to an existing single chainring crankset?
I have a driveline single chainring crankset 52T 130mm BCD, and am thinking of adding a second chainring but I kinda remember reading somewhere here someone said it's not possible to just add a second chainring, gotta change the crankset entirely.
Need some enlightenment on this from the sifus! Lol

OK I will clarify . If your crank and chainring has 5 Allen bolts on it, then you just buy a 39 or a 42 smaller chainring and bolt on it. You don't need to change the bolts but you will have to discard the bash guard. The bigger chainring will sit on the the bash guard's place and the smaller chainring on the original chainring place.

Other than that is off course the shifter and the FD plus it's adapter . Then there's the cable and housing.
*
Oh dear, I like having the bash guard! Is it possible to get longer bolts and maintain the bash guard and have both chainrings? Sorry for asking so many questions. Thanks again etigge!

Yes, you can. There are longer bolts with spacers for it. Come to think of it, I do have a set of it. PM me if you want it. Problem is, just maybe , the position of the inner chainring a might be too far in if you use the spacers and to remedy this you need a BB with longer spindle which is so hard to find, especially the 128mm ones. Another solution is to add spacer to the BB to bring the spindle further out.
*
Thanks for your kind offer but wow sounds really complicated about the BB thing! I'm in no rush to get the second chainring. Probably only later this year, just wanna find out more about what are the most cost effective options.
I'm sure there are ways to settle the BB issue though smile.gif
