Your choice mentioned are almost all on the same specs.  Performance wise is probably similar as well. Dahon Speed P8 is reliable and an old horse. SO far no Speed users have complains, including myself. It's easy to upgrade later as well. Now with SRAM components, it's better than the Neos used last time. Probably the only needed upgrade is the shifter as Dahon propriety shifter is lousy! Anyway, it's less than 100 bucks for both left and right thumb shifters. As for Vigor and MU , these are faster models (so they say lah  tongue.gif ) but usually a rider is as fast as the slowest rider in a group. Hahaaa  rclxms.gif When you ride with your kids, you have to wait for them too, right? You are not wrong either in choosing either one of the mentioned. I preferred Speed for the chromoly frame which is not as harsh when riding as the aluminium frames. That's because I sometimes ride long distance.

As for Tern models, they also have the same specs but Tern seems to be trapped in a time zone. There are no new models from them. The Link and the Verge are the only 2 frame patterns for 20 inch models. In fact, the Verge is actually the Dahon Vector and the new Dahon Vector are now the Vigor similar like frames now. The performance is almost similar to the Dahon aluminium models but it loses out in the handlebar design. That's why Dahon patented it. It's OK if you like Tern designs, but for the higher price paid for it, I see no distinct advantages over the Dahons.  icon_rolleyes.gif

Happy Riding. Nice to see riders riding with the family.  thumbup.gif

Gonna vouch for the Speed P8, a fellow happy owner here as well. Chromoly steel ftw! it's a bit on the heavy side but it rides soooo awesome over rough roads. Not to mention also abundant accessories parts from taobao haha

Still prefer it over Mu though because of the triagle frame design that's easier to carry around when folded (one more bar to hold on to) and also putting it on bicycle stand for maintenance.

My P8 is still stock with the crappy Dahon's shifter and Neos RD but give due credit, I have only adjusted it once after I got the bike and have never experience any bad shifting (crunching, not shifting up/down etc) even after 500km of riding. No doubt though that the SRAM will be better.

Another thing that may be worth changing for P8 would be the brake levers. Didn't really like the original ones and feels much better after I changed it to the Avid FR5

Dahon Speed is now known as D8 and two tone colour, a couple hundred lower than Vigor D9. both nice, SRAM outfit. look vigor D9 scores but Speed comes with twister gear, as Etigge sifu says, less than 100 to change to thumb shifter. I saw Vigor D9 with SRAM s500 derailler while speed clearly mention X7. Not familiar with this S500. are they any good as X7.

For those who has changed Speed P8 to thumb shifter, may I know which shifter do you guys use? I was initially thinking of a Shimano Acera M310 8 speed thumb shifter for the rapid fire function, but just would like to know what others are using

SRAM X-5 ? Microshift?

Shifters are a matter of preference.  The original are SRAM twisters but I never liked twist shifters. So I changed to thumb shifters. On doing that, I decided to go straight to 9 speed as 9 speed offers more choice of shifters. You actually can find Shimano XT or Deore 9 speed shifters if you look hard. I on the other hand found the old age LX shifters for both me and my wife's Boardwalk. Although not really important, all shifters works just fine, indexing is good but the ease of shifting is important to us. We like to do Genting Peras as the place is nearby our house, so shifting easily and also triple chainrings are important to us too. Though we don't use the granny anymore like before. But it is good to have, in times when we are too tired and want to cruise more leisurely, like riding and resting at the same time. To be fair, you need to know, what terrain and what kinds of rides are you planning to ride on.

It also approve my decision as on one of my group rides, there was another rider who blistered her palm trying to shift up and down with the twist shifters. It was not the shifters but a slightly jammed cables. It was not moving very well, maybe some signs of rust in the cable and housing. Another weakness of twist shifters (grip shift) is you tend to over shift. New users will know this. Microshift still has 8 speed shifters , so does Shimano. The SRAM X5 shifters are 10 speed nowadays.  icon_rolleyes.gif

thx sifu desastar and etigge for the input, yeah 9 speed definitely has more options just that i thought of keeping the upgrade cost low. Moving to 9 speed will need new cassette and new chain as well, the extra cog will be useful, though i have no issues with the 8 so far. The main motivation for me to move to thumb shifter is because when i ride uphill and sometimes having to ride standing up, i tend to have my wrists locked for maximum strength and efficiency (dunno how to describe but i think can sorta picture), and twist shifters require u to use ur wrist to twist so it's a bit annoying.

One good thing about twist shifter is probably that u can downshift to many gears coming to a stop at junctions, but that's possible with Shimano's rapidfire as well. Not sure about SRAMs and Microshifts though.

The wait and search is over.... finally got myself the 2015 dahon speed today. what sifu etigge says its true, this steel bike is great in handling. very sturdy.

What I dun like or now checking with dahon forum is the fender has steel/alu spoke to hold the fender is suppose to be bent ? it looks like they created to make the fender hold firmly but I notice other shop they do not bent quite nicely as mine cost one is forcing the steel to bent in order to install the fender.

Rest of it have no complain. great bike.

Thanks Etigge for the recommendation. upgrade need to come later liao.... have commitment on my other bikes upgrade.

My Speed P8's alu spoke for the fender is also slightly bent. I'm not too bother by it. Come to think of it it's probably purposely bent to absorb some bobbing / moving around

and here it is

still scouting for a road fork, and wheelset (those wheelset in the pix are not mine) and planning to put my shimano 105 groupset to it.and hey,its still a folding bike! whistling.gif

Nice projects bro!! Especially love what you've done with the Speed P8!! What I don't like is the poison is now very strong for me to mod LOL.

As for the doppelganger, crossed my mind too to get one and upgrade with better components, but since it's still quite big for a folding bike i decided to just scrap the idea and save up for a normal road bike. But keep us posted on the Doppelganger mod man, it'll be sick to see a folding road bike with awesome 105 components

800 - 1k budget is a good starting price. Geometric has a folding bike with 8 speed SRAM X4 components going for RM 850 at Keen To Cycle at Sunway Mentari, the frame looks like Dahon Vigor P9's

Otherwise Trinx KA2016 or XDS AFB 280 are good choices also.

Why not a foldie like Oscar Imagine for about 450 bucks instead? Smaller than the Hummer so would take up less space smile.gif

Hi,

Intended to buy Hummer 26" folding bike. Any good shop to recommend?
Just curious, is the bike can use for offroad? Anyone tried it before?

The components are not in any way high grade, but usable. It's doable for light trails but definitely not as pleasant an experience as a non-folding MTB.

And yes, like etigge said, the quick release in the middle is one of the weakest point. I broke mine after 2 months of riding it but I managed to get an original QR from Montague and it's been good eversince.

Frame itself is ok, feels alright, but just heavy due to low grade alloy.

Sifus,is this light sufficient for normal road during night?

I'm using this one. Good enough for night rides that has other light source such as street lights but if u're really riding in total pitch black better to get strong lights

RM 50 from Howei (now called Bikelah.com), battery life is one big advantage for this light compared to those using Cree LED bulbs, I lost count but i've bought it since months ago and I've only changed it once. My night rides are every week Wednesday about 2+ hours
