Hi, i'm currently am running a D20 (Pulp Hero) WWII Occult using core rulebooks from D20 Modern, D20 Past, D20 Urban Arcana and D20 Apocalypse. The game setting is having the players playing as Allied troops that are trained to combat against the Nazis secret occult projects during the year of 1946. Think of it like the movie, Hellboy or Indiana Jones' Raiders of the lost Ark and League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Players are given additional choices to play even Psionics (Psychics), Arcane or Divine magic or take the role as the pulp scientist to invent weapons or gadgets.

The game is played in Bukit Bintang area, KL, every Sunday morning. If interested, PM me about it. smile.gif

D20 games have many variatians and settings which Wizards of the Coast released titles such like...

D20 Modern for current modern setting,
Urban Arcana for magic, orcs, elves, etc in modern world,
D20 Past for pulp aventures, victorian eras or pirates,
D20 Future for Sci-Fic era with cyborgs, robots, space travels and Mechas

Other non Wizards of the Coast's release also include D20 Call of Cthulhu and Iron Kingdoms.

When you first look at the core rule books, it may intimidate you because of the rules and thick pages. But don't let that threaten you. The best way to start learning is to play while you learn, it's the easiest course to jump right into it. Don't try to absorb all the rules into your brain, it'll confuse you more. Try to take it bit by bit in order to get yourself used to it first. After a few games later, you'll get the hang of it. If there's someone to guide you, it's even easier to pick up. Then you can start getting yourself familiarize with the combat system, the skills and how magic work later on. That's how i did when i first started playing long while back, i never knew the rules nor how the game works either. biggrin.gif

Playing D&D is like playing any RPG PC/console game except with more free form style and the character you're playing will have the type of class, a set of skills and combat/magic abilities it possesses. If you have played games like Final Fantasy Tactics, the combat system is similar to that. The most fun part of playing D&D or any D20 games, is to play not as yourself but to roleplay the type of character you want him/her to be. A courageous knight? A sneaky, manipulative trickster? The choice is yours to make. smile.gif

Sorry, i can't help you there, i'm not from Penang. But what kind of campaign did you ran? Proberly we could offer you some ideas to bring the flame back. This kinda stuff do happen to some DMs/GMs, they get burned out from running the game. sad.gif

Whenever i get burned out from running a game, i have one of my players to switch sides to run a different game. biggrin.gif

You could run a different kind of campaign, like an evil game or horror. A lot of people don't have the experience to run an evil game because most players tend to have the kind of mindset that says "I kill my party member coz i'm evil", now that's a bad roleplay. Now, the game doesn't have to end like that with having all the players trying to murder each other and ruin your campaign. Just stick to a strict house rule "No PC Killing".

The second problem when running an evil game is the maturity of the players and if they can handle the moral and the uncomfortable feeling of being evil.

Third problem is the lack of character's goals, ambition, teamwork and imagination of being evil. Anyone could just slaughter an entire village with ease. But it takes an artist to convert the townfolk to worship a dark god and have them willingly sacrificed.

To run a horror setting, D&D's Heroes of Horror book should help you greatly in running such campaign. Set the mood by putting some creepy music, put the PCs in such a situation that they're helpless to stop whatever's out there. The rest can be explained in the book. biggrin.gif

The earlier evil adventures of Undying Hate were scrapped as it weren't well prepared so it was revamped to a proper evil campaign. Let me introduce to all...

D&D Evil Campaign: Age of Darkness

The History of the Book of Vile Darkness:

“Only the most indomitable minds dare to look upon the malevolent thoughts and forbidden secrets bound herein. This corrupt tome is filled with deplorable wisdom, malignant ideas, and description of creatures, rites and practices most foul. Evil permeates every word and image inscribed within it” wrote by Orcus, Demon Prince of the Undead.

It has been said that there are several copies of the Book of Vile Darkness, but only one ever existed in this world, holds true to its origin content whereas the rest as fakes. It is a highly prized reference work of evil. It has its origins as a scroll penned by a Vasharan spellcaster to document his evil knowledge. The scroll was later discovered by a cleric of Nerull, who added her knowledge; other priests who learned from her additions added their own. Eventually the collected works came into Vecna's possession. After his transformation to lichdom, he transcribed the scrolls to a bound book. After he ascended to godhood, he scribed in the original book exactly how he did it. The copies do not contain this information. The book has had many owners, including Erythnul cultists and Baalzebul. Six complete copies plus numerous flawed copies exist, and evil flourishes wherever the book goes.

About Tharizdun:
Tharizdun is the god of Eternal Darkness, Destruction, Decay, Entropy, Malign Knowledge, and Insanity. He was imprisoned ages ago by a coalition of deities to prevent the destruction of existence itself. Tharizdun is known as the Dark God, and He of Eternal Darkness. Tharizdun's doctrine is to destroy all and everything encountered, as he puts it:

“The very threads of existence must be torn asunder, then burned, then the ashes scattered, until all is nothing and no one exists to remember existence”

Tharizdun's Domains: Darkness, Destruction, Evil, Force, Knowledge, Madness
Favored Weapon: Curved dagger, for sacrificial rites (clergy); or double axe

The Goal:
The cult’s main goal is to initiate and to fasten the process of the final coming of the Age of Darkness. The priests have taken many years to decipher the ancient book of evil, foretold that the world will end in great darkness, the sea runs red of blood and the great Tharizdun will be freed from imprisonment to utterly unmake creation of existence. This is where the PCs begin as initiates for the cult.

Sorry for the late reply. To answer your question about D20 Modern...

D20 Modern is basically like playing DnD, except, yeah, it's in a modern setting. The "modern" setting can be of anything...

From action-packed-shoot-em-blow-em-car-chase-to-you-get-the-point (bourne identity, shooter, etc), horror (ala buffy the vampire slayer/blade/ghost busters, call of cthulhu or any other type of creepy horror), cops and robbers (rainbow six/grand theft auto), espionage (ala solid snake/splinter cell), you name it, they got it. D20 Modern is all about that kinda settings and it's all about how the GM/DM runs the setting.

There's also other type of settings such as D20 Past (WWII, Pirates, Indiana Jones wannabe), D20 Future (Star Trek, Star Wars, Giant Mechas, Patlabors, Star Fox, Blade Runner, Terminator), D20 Dark Matter (Every conspiracy theories existed like the UFO crash landings to Men in Black), D20 Apocalypse (Mad Max, Fallout, Waterworld...and any type of amargeddon settings).

Playing tabletop game depends on the GM/DM's playstyle and no, i doubt you could just go steal a truck and run around with no pants on and NOT expect any consequences, like cops. Unless that GM/DM actually allows such things, then that GM/DM doesn't have enough knowledge on how to run a game properly.

Also, i'm currently running a homebrew DnD campaign using the 3.5 edition rules system. There are several houserules with additional add-ons to the gaming rules such as criticals, call shots and etc. My group's playstyle is pretty serious but not to the point of shakespearean type of roleplay and we occasionally do joke around. So we want some serious players, not casual ones who won't bother to learn about the game and needs to be babyspoon fed every single time. I run my games pretty strict, with everything on it, from roleplay, to hack and slash, to puzzle solving, to enviroment challenge, etc, just so to cater every players' needs in the group.

So i'm looking for eager and serious players (not casual players), with at least a bit of experience of gaming (like, you had sample one or two games before). Even if you have no experience at all, we can teach you the basics, but the rest is up to your ownself to learn.

We're not letting in anyone in permanently, so if you're interested, we'll do some player try-outs to see if you're alight to game with us or not. So if you're interested, just reply the thread or gimme a PM.

Hi there,

No problem. You can get the set of dices in Bangsar Shopping Complex, there's a game/comic shop there, can't remember the name though, at 1st/2nd floor (should be nearby to a food court). The shop usually caters pokemon gamers and sells RPG books as well. Its quite cheap actually, about RM 20-30 for a set of dices. You can also get individual dices as well, ranging from the normal sized dices, to the size of a golf ball.

If i remembered correctly, Mid Valley, on the top floor, nearby the California Gym, there's also a game/hobby shop there. But i'm not sure if they still have dices in stock, but they should have them there. Since they too stock RPG materials like RPG books and Warhammer miniatures.

There's 2 game/comic shops in Damansara Jaya areas, one of them called Comics Corner, but the other i can't remember and also where's the exact location since i'm not familiar of them myself.

There's also Wolf's Gameshop, but it's pain in the ass for me to get there. It's located somewhere inside PJ, where public transport is another problem.

You could also try Toybox, in Taman Paramount, it's nearby Giant supermarket, just above the mechanic shop. From there, you can get your dices as well as card/board games. I think you need to preorder the dices, they don't usually stock them but i could be wrong.

Here's the link: http://www.toybox.com.my/blog/?page_id=2

Most of these shops are located in PJ and Damansara Jaya areas.

jaslow88,

Terribly sorry to hear your current predicament. As a fellow DM, I would like to extend any help in the form of advice should you still need it (and are playing after this long). It is a terrible shame to let the hobby die (particularly D&D) seeing how back in the 80s Penang used to be the capital of gaming in Malaysia. Seems like the crowd has moved down here and the number of groups have dwindled from 23 down to less than 3 the last I've checked.

Wicked cool mate! (with regard to the old post)

Good to hear that you have finally succumbed to the Adventure Path Series. I would highly recommend Savage Tide though unless it is a continuity issue you want to contend with. Even if so, you'd do well to start off with the one set in Cauldron first.

The Age Of Worms got a little bit broken towards the later part of the game though. Could be something good that the players will look forward to hahaha.

Dear Strife,

Every 2 years I plan massive buys for dice from overseas in hopes of pressing the purchase prices down. I'll inform you of my next purchase cycle if you are still interested then. I figure it will happen sometime around the end of this year. The delivery is usually through some forwarder, passed on to my place and eventually distributed through friends and Uncle from Comics Corner (though I have not seen him in ages already).

If you are just buying small amounts, I'd suggest you settle for the recommendations put forward by Sadistic_Reaper. The purchases for import dices are only worth it if you are collecting at least 3-4 sets at one go. Something that a DM or crazy dice collector like me would do, except maybe 30 sets at one time haha. happy.gif;;

Everyone has their vices wub.gif whistling.gif
