any nice stable ROM? ideally with KitKat?

gonna try rooting the s3 (yes, finally planning to do that).

btw, if just flash recovery, no root needed, right? tried flashing TWRP via ODIN but didn't work... weird.

i think i realise why TWRP not flashed. seems like stock rom will re-write and reinstall stock recovery upon reboot... hmmm...

errr... i figured one step at a time. with a better recovery, i thought i could do a complete backup first...

contact backup. if saved to Google/ Gmail, then should be good

pictures and files... since you seem to indicate the phone still works, then maybe transfer via microSD card? copy all out. might take time.

but if bad water damage, sometimes might be better to dry it inside rice container for a few days first.

what i can see... most 5.0 ROMs are still in alpha and not really stable yet.

so not trying.

anyway, ended up rooting the phone yesterday since i could not find a way to flash recovery without the stock one reinstalling itself.

then went on to flash Liquid Smooth. dun really know why... but just don't seem to be my cuppa. it seems ok but could not find options for infinite scroll on homepage (something i really like). i know... can use other launchers but to me, that defeats one of the purpose of installing custom rom. some other little things includes : advanced options hanging on me and causing FC, hard to get to settings when i pull down notification (i prefer some ROMS that allows 'immediate' access to SETTINGS)...

wanted to try DN4 since it seems kinda impressive but when i saw the file size (1.6GB, i think), i decided not to try... yet.

so, gonna go with CM11 Nightly and see how. had previously tried it on S2 and while it did not really have everything i wanted, it was still decent.

what are you guys on?

hahaha... i guess its not diff than my adventures with the Note 2. after playing around, ended up with an optimised stock ROM -- ARHD.

anyway, can i ask... how to Flash kernel? any difference from flashing regular ROM? use ODIN and select PDA? can use TWRP?

liquidsmooth also around 100+Mb only... i was just surprised that DN4 is so big...

managed to download the DN4 ROM last night... had put off earlier due to the large size compared to other ROMS... DN4 was like 1.4GB compared to 100+ for LiquidSmooth, etc...

having used DN3 rom on Note2 before, i was kinda skeptical since the DN3 left a bad after taste.

but good news... first impression... not bad. did not detect those little quirks that i used to see on DN3. but its too soon to tell since i only flashed it this morning and the phone is without SIM card, so not much to test.

i noticed the ROM came baked with some extra apps... so, deleted them.

it seems to come with Boeffla v2.1.

eh, i tested the DN4 on S3... menu button works like typical Samsung menu button.

interesting... just checked out the thread.

seems Blekota optimised on the DN4 ROM -- i can see he credited the ETeam (the team behind DN4). i am guessing this could and should be better than the DN4. but i guess he could only be customising based on what he wants...

btw, do you have other extra apps in the ROM? i noticed on the DN4 ROM, there were some extra apps like
Memo (not S Note), some apps for 'walking', etc...

the S3 is now actually my "test" phone. using it for various testing. I'm using it's bigger brother Note 2. I'm still hooked to the pen, so probably still go back to NOTE series when my phone dies.

but those who don't need pen, lots of options. OnePlus is high on my list - cheap and good. released last year, AP set selling for about rm1.3k for 64GB version. specs... I'd say better than s5.

XiaoMi... I dun like the UI. yes, can use other launchers, I guess...

hmmm... for me, i noticed the s3 is picky about with AP it connects to. some AP, it can detect and connect just fine. some AP (sadly, including the one in my house)... it just simply won't connect and telling me some error. i think it's just some firmware issue...?

using CM... but forgot which one liao...

any test we can do to confirm if it's so called HW issue?

i guess i can power up my S3 and test it over the next few days and see if it's the same...

powered up my S3 and tested. ya... the wifi seems to work. can connect to my phone hotspot, office network... just won't connect to my home Streamyx router. dem, that means it's useless at home. dunno why.

since i powered up the phone, checked and notice there's update for my CM. now running nightly CM14...
