Hi, something to share with all existing and future maxis WBB....

BACKGROUND:
I've got my Maxis WBB on a cash and carry terms (RM100) at the
Curve 15 days ago. I'm staying in Desa ParkCity (Kepong) condo sitting
at the 19th floor.

THE TEST:
My expectation was low as I did not plan to do any BT and i consider
myself as a "light" BB user, but as soon as i got it back to my apartment
i went crazy surfing for software, MP3 and most of all... BT!!!! I've yet to Discon since Day 1 and the Torrenting has not stop ever....

THE RESULTS:

SpeedTest.Net indicates an average of d/l@90kb/s and u/l@35kb/s
during daytime & average of d/l@150kb/s and u/l@39kb/s during 1am till 6am period.

However, BT is really stable sitting at average of 45kB/s daytime and an
amazing 80kB/s at night (Bear in mind that these torrents are low peers
torrent). Max BT speed is at 155kB/s (constant for 4 hours, still cannot
determine the real contributor to max-out at all times).

(Note: The key factor for high-rise condo users is that you need to
enhance the anttenna for the ZTEMF600 using this link:
http://www.freeantennas.com/projects/template/index.html
Helps to reduce Ec/Io factor by 3-5 dB)

PROBLEM:

I've just found out abt the new RM138 pm Maxis USB connection
package.... and 3.5Mbps is really attractive together with the sexy
pocket size modem (comparing to ZTEMF600:sucks!), therefore i know
i needed a plan to CHANGE....

SOLUTION:
I went to Maxis KLCC at 4pm today and I told them my 50true/50untrue
story:

I told them that the sales team at the Curve promise me a free upgrade
from the existing package and that i can use the ZTE while waiting for
the new USB, i also told them that i've only found out about the 18 months tied-up yesterday thru the hotline operator. I pinpointed that as
this is cash & carry, Maxis CANNOT NOT ENFORCE FIX CONTRACT unlike
ASTRO where you request installation. I was making a scene at the new
USB WBB counter and the Manager finally shows up and apologized for
the confusion. He claims that because Maxis sub out the sales to agents
and they should be the one responsible for the misunderstanding. But
i told them that the "agents" were wearing Maxis T-shirts and Maxis Banner all over the place. The crowd there (potential Maxis WBB user) agrees with me. The manager gave in and ask me to return the old modem tomorrow morning in exchange for the USB type. Wish me luck tomorrow.

CONCLUSION:
If you pay, you are the consumer. If not happy, Consumer can make
noise. If make noise, Noise must be heard by EVERYBODY. Therefore,
go to Maxis KLCC at peak hour (2pm till 5pm) if you wanna be heard.
must be heard....

Are you sure you can BT during daytime? I also using the Power Package of Maxis Wireless Broadband. BT is 100% not moving during daytime except after 1am then it moves with crazy speed. Btw, wish you luck tomolo if you able to change your modem. =)
*
I monitor the speed during Saturday and Sunday and it shows very positive results....
I'm still trying to optimize the speed (w/o port forward feature) by playing around with
the MTU,RWIN and stuff but the results is minimal (around 5-10%) and not confirmed
as the WBB speed itself varies with clouds and stuff.

Any existing Maxis USB WBB user? care to share your story?

Finally I've bypass maxis lame port capping...Phew , now I am tunneling everything through a dedicated SSH Server

Do you mind sharing the details? Will this boost the BT speed? any results to share?

I've just shifted to Maxis WBB USB 3.5Mbps from the lame ZTEMF600... I've got "great speed" during the first hour
but after optimizing some registry and stuff, the speed drop back to a 768k performance... still new alot of optimization...

Do A Ping Check for 5 minutes straight. For best results, do it on 3 tries.

Give me a report on it. If you wish, you can send it in a PM. I'm not sure whether this is also a support thread for Maxis Wireless Broadband? Because I don't want to infringe any rules.

We'll see how it goes.

BTW, do a traceroute check also.
*
Results :
Ping statistics for 209.131.36.158:
Packet: Sent = 184, Received = 154, Lost =30 (16% loss)
App round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum=268ms, Max=421ms, Avg=281ms

============================================

Is there a way i can send you the data w/o filling in the entire thread space...?

Seems to be enough. Its pretty obvious that your signal is not on full strength. You're having quite a huge loss of packets, and the tracecert that you gave me isn't proving otherwise either.

I think that's why its reverting to the HSDPA (even though its 768, i'm suspecting a HSDPA connection)

TRy boosting the signal, (the parabola technique seems to work) and see if its any better. Direct it to the station that you can see.
*
For Maxis USB, what would be the best SIGNAL type? I've tried to log on at KLCC ground (open-air), the connection kept switching between
HSDPA and UMTS...would running programs like Net Speed Booster helps or making things worse?

You switch to the new USB modem. Do you find it better than the ZTE modem? What is the procedure you need to switch it? I'm currently using the ZTE modem. I mean the new ZTE modem and Power Package.
*
How long since you started, more than 30days? Well i got luck, I've changed it this morning at KLCC after 15days of used.
No charges but needed to pay RM100 for the USB package... it is more stable in terms of signal and of course, the new
modem powered by USB means more mobile. But i'm still dealing with it as it is still new, I'm convince that there are things
to be done in order to enjoy the >2Mbps constantly.... i hope.....

Did you use the www.openssh.org (http://pigtail.net/LRP/printsrv/cygwin-sshd.html) direction for this?
If yes, please share the results? How significant is the improvements like?

There is no HSDPA connection in KLCC. What you're actually getting is the signal from the nearest UTMS base stations. The HSDPA connection that you got was  from an internal server from Maxis Tower. (its a station built within maxis tower so that maxis tower could get a HSDPA signal). I hope that clarifies the question. You should not be expecting a HSDPA signal yet, because there isn't one in KLCC, and the signal burst is not strong enough to penetrate KLCC. (or even the nearest areas)
*
The problem is the signal shows HSDPA full bar (5) but the speedtest results remain poor. The problem is that I've yet to witness
HYPER speed to confirm if it is Hardware/Software or Maxis problem. Is there a list of specific location that you can get full strength
HSDPA signal?

Do it yourself for your maxis  for those of you that are having connectivity issues (i.e low signal). This may help to boost the signal

To all ZTE MF600, this is a must to enjoy MAXOUT speed... especially for those in high-rise.

Prasys,

Really need to ask you how OpenSSH helps.... I've tried it using the guide in Openssh.org but because I dun really understand
the system function, i failed to complete all the steps in it. I'm using "Open SSH for Windows", CYGWIN and WINVCN... am i on
the right track? Help needed.

The speed during the wee hours of morning is pretty fast. But then I don't use the Internet during the daytime as I've to attend college. So its pretty useless. During the nightime , when i really need it..bam it does not work
*
Topic : Open SSH and tunnel everything thru it using PuTTY.

Hi, i've experiment this on Maxis WBB USB and somehow manage to open a port "60000" verified by Advanced Port Scanner v1.3.
The d/l speed did not change much but when i Telnet my IP (or 'double-click' on port 60000 at the Port scanner), my uTorrent shows
the beautiful "GREEN" tick at the bottom and speed started to surge forward by as much as 100%. But this could not last for more than
5 minutes. but as soon as I re-do it again, the speed gone up again. It is like "ping-ing" a port but you can't do it without telnet. I've
checked the Port forwarded test at uTorrent and it still shows "Error! Port 60000 does not appear to be open."

Any advice? With the above method, my Torrent d/l speed jumps from 15kB/s to 30-35 kB/s.

This is a joke. Stay away from Maxis (if possible). My friend came over (he is a maxis wireless user as well and he is using that tiny USB Modem {I call it handy}]. We compared our speeds. Hes speed is way better then mine ( He just registered yesterday) and I'm speechless. Seriously , I have no word. He might be coming to my place today or tomorrow and I am going to test out his modem on my PC. If I am getting around the same speed as his...Then I think I know that maxis is trying to 'dump' the old users. Its just a hypothesis guys..I could be wrong as well
*

I kinda of disagree with that statement. I'm using the maxis USB kit and I'm speechless as well, BECAUSE of its UNSTABLE speed. When it is high, it goes beyond 1.8Mbps but this is just for a minute or so and then you will get a crappy 100-300kbps thru out. I've yet to see a stable >1.5Mbps performance, any good location where I can take a drive to? I really wanted to see it at MAX-OUT speed. drool.gif

The only good comment I have for it is that i've tested it on a few off-3G location such as Kota Bharu (UTMS-5bar) and Ipoh (UTMS-1bar & GPRS-5bar). Still ok for me to receive emails and read soccer news.

I've with Maxis technical Dept at KLCC, they claim that the USB wireless is still new and the are doing some adjustment on their end to resolve this but bear in mind that they did mention that they did not promise a consistent 1.5M - 2.0M thru out, but it is capable. Hmmmm..... that is the part I felt cheated.... "sob* sigh*.... sad but true.

Let just pray that their so-called "adjustment" WORKS!!!
