i voted for cantona Pele and maradona probably are good last time coz the other players are not up to their standards, compared to the epl nowadays, mostly are equally matched. |

if striker is one who blast the ball into the goal - it's gotta be batistuta (as my vote goes)... cantona comes a close second, henry is good but is a different kind of striker...

The best strikers during my time are Batistuta and Van Basten without a doubt. They have been consistent throughout their careers. Those that I have watched videos of? Cruyff, Pele of course and let's not forget Gerd "Da Bomber" Muller!

Henry for all his talent is not a natural striker if you ask me. He's got bags of ability and skill but I think strikers should be more direct. Remember that Henry started off as a left winger and was converted only upon arriving at Arsenal. Strikers to me are players that are the focal point up front and spend most of their time in the opposition box. Forwards are players who get well... forward a lot from deep positions and make runs into the opposition box.

Gerd Muller is also one of the best.. he maybe a bit short and stocky, just like Mokhtar Dahari.. he maybe lazy to get the ball, but when the ball gets to him, he scores.. |

eric cantona. learned from him "stop when you are on prime". cruyff deserved with his fancy footwork and diego what can i say. "hand of god". anyway RVN deserve a spot there. a natural goal-machine. "the forgotten no.10"

I would vote for Maradona but the thread says Greatest Striker of Your Time.
I vote Ronaldo.Sure the current fatnaldo is crap. But during his early days he was majestic. Hmm.....why no Kempes.Valencia CF's greatest player of all time.1977 and 1978 pichichi for Valencia CF.He leads Argentina to their first World Cup in 1978.No Hugo Sanchez either.5 times pichichi for Real Madrid in the 80's. |

QUOTE(bob @ Sep 22 2006, 10:29 AM) True but the thread title says "Greatest Striker of Your Time". Maradona was as you say, a playmaker. When comparing strikers we look at not just how many goals they've scored, but in how many games as well. In short, goal ratios. It's pretty unfair to Maradona to have him in this category as his main job wasn't to score goals but to create opportunites. If you were to include Maradona, you would also have to include Platini, Di Stefano, Puskas and all the other legendary midfielders. Just a thought. |

Depending on whether its for club or for country.
For club, my vote grudgingly goes to: Kenny Dalglish.. For country, it has to be: PELE |

Maradona, Cruijff, are not strikers, they play mostly as a scoring attacking midfielder. While Baggio and Raul operated mostly as a deep lying forward with the tendencies to create more than scoring solely.
Van Basten is very good striker but can also being considered overrated due to his early retirement when he's on his peak. Ronaldo was a legend during his short spell with Barcelona, a phenomenon who doesn't rely on his finishing alone to make his mark, his dribbling skill, the way his bombard opponent's defend was a breathtaking stuff, unfortunately he doesn't sustain his form to this very day. A shame. Pele never proven himselves in other club, which can easily considered as lacking in ambition and rather playing in the comfort zone. Besides Garrincha was the instigator in Pele's revolution. But skill wise, Pele is beyond any striker in his era. Henry and Shevchenko are still lagging behind, and they can't yet established themselves as a true footballing legend (perhaps for the club, but overall i i still think they need to have a sustained solid performance for their countries and perhaps play abroad in La Liga or other league to prove they able to cope even outside their comfort zone, Sheva has yet to convince me with Chelsea, Henry was a mess in his Juve day) My vote goes to Romario, the goal scoring god, succeeded in almost all league that he played for, clubs like PSV, Barcelona, Vasco Da Gama, Flamengo are few of the clubs he has joined and each of them can be considered lucky to have him around, his composure, positioning, strength is unbelievable, he can score goals from every angle, even with 3-4 players surrounding him, he still able to sneak a goal in. And now he's chasing this 1000th career goals which only will prove himselves as one of the best if not the best striker of all time. This post has been edited by Dookie: Oct 6 2006, 04:16 PM |

QUOTE(taor3n @ Oct 4 2006, 02:56 AM) Torres a great finisher? You're joking right? How about the most overrated player in Primera Division history. A one trick pony who has absolutely zero composure in front of goals. 2 seasons of mediocrity except for the 2003/04, one good WC and suddenly we have all sorts of people jumping to his bandwagon, and calling him as one of the best strikers right now.David Villa is a great finisher, Torres is not. |

If it's a current good finisher that you're looking for, I'm surprise Morientes hasn't been mentioned. With exception for his spell at Liverpool, he's be banging them in his whole career.

His ego and arrogance is possibly the main flaw of Romario, but no one can argue his technique and on the pitch performance, we are looking for the greatest striker not the greatest off pitch player. And Romario has that very attributes, putting his name on the same line with the likes of Henry or Klinsmann is a total joke in my view.
And yes, Van Basten is slightly overrated, he was on top of his game, and everybody knows him hailing him when suddenly injury struck and he was forced to retire, and we all remember him as the great striker because we've not seen his downfall possibly in his latter career if he continues playing til 40. Romario is still playing even as we speak, and his peak was over years ago, making him forgetteable in terms of popularity wise. |

And lets not forget, Van Basten surrounded by world class star of the new revolution Ajax 1983-1985 squad and then playing with the likes of Baresi, Rijkaard, Gullit at Milan who makes things easier while Romario on the other hand surrounded by a very mediocre players when he was at PSV, Vasco and Fluminense.

By that definition, we'd have to take someone like Luca Toni into consideration seeing as he has never been surrounded by an array of stars. Batistuta was never surrounded by great talent during his time at Fiorentina. They even got relegated with him in the team. Alan Shearer almost singled handedly won the premiership for Blackburn and since then he's not played for any top side (not that Blackburn are a top side, even back then).
I'm not refuting that Romario is a class act but you have to understand that people can only vote for players they've actually seen play with their own eyes. It's also no secret we don't get extensive coverage of the Dutch or Brazilian leagues. True not many players play into their 40's but we aren't looking at the duration of their careers or we would have to include Roger Milla. Perhaps, but lets not forget Luca Toni only hitting his true form (similar to Klose) when he was 27 at Palermo and currently with Fiorentina. He was a very average player at Brescia. And he never proven himselves away from his comfort zone possibly abroad or for his country while Romario has achieved both feat remarkably well.
And Milla was no legend (maybe an African or Cameroon legend), he was always shadowed by injury and below average performance during his early career at the French Ligue (with Bastia and Monaco), only then at St. Etienne (IIRC), he hit a big time but again, it was a very mediocre side and he just excelled in a very normal fashion at a very medicore league. And for Blackburn 1994-95 season, I won;t call Shearer 'single-handedly' won the title perhaps we forgetting Sutton contribution who was immense in that very season. |

Alan Shearer is just shear class. he should be hailed as one of the true legends of english football... i bet there is or will be any other english striker that is better than him... and he can score all type of goals... and he player for top side in newcastle... just that he had two serius injured that made him lose so much of his pace and yet manage to score 206 goals for newcastle... if he didnt get injured we might have put some really good challenge on the title...I'm not refuting that Romario is a class act but you have to understand that people can only vote for players they've actually seen play with their own eyes. Besides, I'm only judging players listed in the poll, but if i have to span the scope wider, then names like Eusebio, Alcantara, Sivori, Puskas, Muller, Sanchez, Batistuta, Fontaine etc. etc. should be in the list especially Gerd Muller.
Maybe we could list the greatest striker of their era for example: 50s: Puskas 60s: Pele 70s: Muller 80s: Rossi / Van Basten 90s: Romario 2000s (early): Ronaldo 2000s (now): Henry / Shevchenko |

Think we should select a particular time frame as Dookie has suggested. It's pretty obvious from here that there are many posters in their early 20's and have probably never seen Van Basten play much less Gerd Muller. I myself only started watching football in the late 80's and have never seen many of the legends play with my own eyes. All I have are highlights and statistics to base my judgement on.

From the pool, I can see only two notable names:
PELE and MARADONA. But my vote is MARADONA. The only world cup even ever named to a player is during Mexico 86' where he dictates the whole tournament. Currently I've never seen any player who entrusted by the coach to change formation and game approach during a game to a player. He's the REAL thinker on the field during that World Cup. Pele might score a lot of goals, but Maradona excell on both area, creates and scores. Another point is no player have the influence of changing economics situation (Napoli) Napoli blossomed when he was there... But..this is only my opinion. |

i assume you mean christiano ronaldo? he's not a striker ler. in any case, you really should have a look at a couple of the players mentioned above first. ronaldo is still young and has not achieved anything near the legends mentioned. his time will come, but i think it's a little premature now, no offence.

since my fav striker is not in the list, and i hate to compare with the oldies striker , my vote goes to romario.
(for me classic soccer was quite slow and not pyhsical. i'm still wondering whether pele can cope with modern soccer Romario is damn good, he might not be as skillful as ronaldo (during his young age) but romario scores goal like eating nuts.. too bad he missed wcup 98 due to injury, and brazil had no choice but to depend on ronaldo only.. |

R. Baggio is a striker? I thought he was a midfielder just like Totti. My vote goes to the pair of Romario and Bebeto. Those guys sure are something back then, altho i favoured Italy back then and I always have.
and one more person is Ole Gunnar Solksjaer. this guys is just truly amazing, after missing for almost 3 seasons not to play for MU first team. Now he's back and scored goals like he's 20 plus. |

What the hell...da best striker of all time would had to be....Andy Cole. No offence, even capable to miss a series of sitters but he bought so much success. After all..da 2nd to Alan Shearer in terms of goals scored in EPL.
Gimme a hell yeah for Andrew Cole.... |

the best striker of ALL TIME, ..hmm most of the legends i never watched them play 90 minits of the game only by a short video clips, but from what they achieved, nobody can take Pele n Maradona place as the best striker the world ever had. just look at what Maradona did to Napoli ? hehe .. its like, Carlos Tevez give West Ham Utd a premiership crown.
the best striker in my time ... its the one n only Eric Cantona. |

Why can't Pele and Maradona be in the list? Not everyone who uses the internet were born in/after the late 70's and early 80's

I vote for our legendary Flying-kick specialist Eric Cantona ! Great finishing & wonderful goalscoring record. He's certainly one of Manchester United's & the world's best striker of all time.

From a Liverpool perspective, Ian Rush and Robbie Fowler were superb finishers. 'God' made 236 appearances for the Reds and scored 120 goals. He could score with his back to the goal much like he proved with the goal against Birmingham in a cup final. Rushie made 469 appearances, netting 229 times. There may be more impressive goal ratios now but consideration has the be given to the fact that they played in a time where teams often played with two out-and-out strikers. They had to share their goal tallies with the likes of Beardsley, Aldridge and Collymore who were prolific in their own right, not to mention that they also played with one another. Nowadays many teams play with one out-and-out striker backed up by a supporting striker.

Probably because when you refer to "the best football striker of ALL time", you are talking about legends who have been prolific throughout their entire careers and not just a few season. Drogba is in a rich vein of form but to compare him with someone like Pele for example, is a little unfair at this point.
Fair enough if the question were "best striker of YOUR time" though. Having said that, you would still be inclined to pick someone who has been consistent their whole career up until this point, and playing at the highest level. If Drogba were to play in Malaysia, he'd probably have 50 goals a season but like I said, you have to take the level of competition into consideration. |

Well it's harsh to judge a striker by his ability to defend really, though it helps.

It seems the topic has strayed from naming strikers who could score, defend, tackle, etc and play keeper.
Oh well, Jorge Campos was actively a keeper AND a striker during his playing career in Mexico. He would play in goal but swap jerseys if his team was behind to play upfront. |

How do you judge a striker actually?
Well to me its goals vs match ratio... i'll vote for the recently passed on Ferenc Puskas - 83 goals in 84 career international matches - 511 goals in 533 matches in the Hungarian and Spanish leagues. |

According to FIFA, Pel ended his career with a total of 1281 goals in 1363 matches.
Tats averaging almost 1 goal per game. Who can match him? Almost nobody ever get close to a thousand goal in their whole career. |

If we compare all player at their best; i think i choose Henry.. he truly best strikers.. others maybe can dribble better, got better skill, better shooting rate... but all combine, i think Henry... fast, great footworks, upper and lower body strenght, oso accurate shooting...

Marco van Basten for #1. If we're defining best striker by the amount of goals scored, then the title should be highest goalscorer. But then again, "best" is subjective. After van Basten, I'd say Henry, Romario, and Ronaldo in no particular order. Bergkamp was superb, but he always played more as an attacking midfielder/forward than a striker. Otherwise, I'd say Dennis Bergkamp. Remember vs Argentina at France '98

I suppose it would only be fair to vote for players who have completed their careers. For all we know, some of the strikers here would have lost their scoring touches by then. That is my interpretation when I read, "off all time" anyway.

Well said. Too many people are inclined to pick players from their teams when there are truly other living legends to consider. Van Basten was truly great and even more recently, Batigol was prolific his whole career.

QUOTE(befitozi @ Mar 16 2007, 12:07 AM) i find it odd that henry is getting the highest vote .... True but you have to realise that many posters here are pretty young and have never seen these legends in action. I also find the question of who the best striker of all time is very subjective. What are we using as a measure? Do you look at this games to goals ratio? I mean strikers are meant to score goals aren't they? If this is the case then someone like Gerd Muller should be mentioned as well. Here is his scoring record btw:players like Maradona , Best , Kempes , Cantona and Cruyff are better then Henry doing their days ... and mind you ... FAR better ... 1964 - 1979 : Bayern Munich (427 appearances - 365 goals) 1979 - 1981 : Fort Lauderdale Strikers (80 appearances - 40 goals) 1966 - 1974 : West Germany (62 appearances - 68 goals) Average : 0.83 goals per game To sum everything up, he has played a total of 569 games, scoring 473 times! That is almost a goal every game. When he has represented his nation, he scored more than a goal a game! Amazing feat if you ask me. Incidentally, Pele's record is as follows: 1956 - 1974 : Santos FC (605 appearances - 589 goals) 1975 - 1977 : New York Cosmos (64 appearances - 37 goals) 1956 - 1971 : Brazil (92 appearances - 77 goals) Average : 0.92 goals per game. Sum that up and he's played 761 games, scoring 703 goals. I guess he is the top contender then. This post has been edited by Duke Red: Mar 16 2007, 02:13 PM |

QUOTE(verx @ Mar 16 2007, 05:42 PM) He's obviously pointing to the fact that Henry still leads the polls. Which imo shows how pointless this poll is. So you're now taking a swipe at my powers of perception? I do agree it is pointless though. Most posters have picked players that have played for their clubs. Then a majority also do not elaborate on why they think a said player is the best. |

/OT - Man Utd has never produced a world class strikers from their youth team. We have many good midfield and defenders coming from the youth but never a striker. |

how about romario from brazil??
now he is searching for his 1000 goals, this is 999 goals from him, ![]() ![]() he is the one of best strikers and not all the strikers can got 1000 goals in this real world ![]() 26/03/2007 14.29 Romrio Nets 999 At Maracan Rio de Janeiro saw 41 year-old striker Romrio net his 999th goal - according to his own contested count - at the city's Maracan stadium. The number 11 was on target as Vasco da Gama made short shrift of Flamengo in the Carioca derby as the 'Bacalhau' won 0-3 with Romrio tailing off the scoring. The scene is set for the 'Baixinho' (Shorty) to make the magical four figures against Americano, the fixture set for Wednesday night at Vasco's hillside So Janurio stadium. The player himself, however, is angling for the match to be relocated to the same stage as his 999th goal. "I'd really like to score the thousandth at Maracan", stressed Romrio. "I'm going to ask [Vasco President] Eurico Miranda to move the game to Maracan if at all possible, but if not, no problem, I'll still celebrate the goal with all of my heart", added Romrio. He also had consolatory words for a Flamengo whose shirt he's also donned. "Winning a 'clssico' is always a great thing because of the rivalry, but I'm grateful to both teams. I had some great times with Flamengo and Vasco; two of the biggest clubs in the world." Coach Renato Gacho supported his star and friend. "Personally I think that moving the Americano game to Maracan is a good idea. Vasco could do this as we are the club who choose the venue" "He [Romrio] is now fully centred on that 1000th goal and it could come at Maracan midweek or there's another derby at Maracan against Botafogo next weekend, so we'll all just have to see what happens", concluded the Coach. http://goal.com/en/articolo.aspx?contenutoid=265584 This post has been edited by scorps: Mar 27 2007, 12:31 PM |

True but we have to take into account that he's 41 now. Most footballers would have retired in their mid 30's. Marco Van Basten himself was forced to retire at 31. Who knows what he could have achieved if he played on another 10 years?
In any case, Romario is definitely one of the best. |

QUOTE(Duke Red @ Mar 27 2007, 02:48 PM) True but we have to take into account that he's 41 now. Most footballers would have retired in their mid 30's. Marco Van Basten himself was forced to retire at 31. Who knows what he could have achieved if he played on another 10 years? I thought Van Basten was crook at 29?In any case, Romario is definitely one of the best. Had to agree with u, even though his goals record is a bit debatable, but to score about 700++ confirmed top class goals is pure class. |

Mine....
Rooooooonaldo! His Barcelona times= Godlike! Inter=Superb! Real Madrid=played well in the first season, but slowly party lifestyle got into him. Still able to pull off some fine goals though. Ac Milan=his goals against Inter was pure class Too bad, he is too injury prone... During Barcelona and Inter days, he relied on pace and technique. But after that knee injury, he depends most on his shooting technique and not his pace anymore. That's why he can't go back to his prime time. |

So obviously you should pick Pele. my vote goes to baggio,i'm the fans of italia CODE True but we have to take into account that he's 41 now. Most footballers would have retired in their mid 30's. Marco Van Basten himself was forced to retire at 31. Who knows what he could have achieved if he played on another 10 years? why i not think about his age aaa?? |

I would compare his style more to of Inzaghi then Crespo .. although yea , both of them are masters in this skill as well . but still , van Nistelrooy is the best at this , all time .

to be exact, RVN is a pure centre forward. he is the best in terms of positioning and tap-in.
not many teams have this kind player nowadays. most teams choose to have a more mobile forward. |

QUOTE(ricky_cassidy @ May 21 2007, 10:57 AM) dunno why mas players tend to get out of form after getting married...maybe too much of exercise on bed leads to weak knees!!! Malaysian players lack discipline lah. Overseas, a players diet is regulated. Here, they makan nasi lemak for breakfast, how to keep fit lah? Our local delicacies like Nasi Lemak, Nasi Kandar, Mee Goreng and whatever are really low in nutritional content while high in fat, glucose and carbs. Not enough protein man. |

well off topic to msian players...look at how FAM is being run, you get the same type of players coming out from there I'm in OZ for a few years now and I could see just how professional and transparent ppl run things here and esp sports organisation.. Cool votes, but wonder why not much ppl vote for Johan Cruyff? he just the best, for me a striker should not only knw how to score goal, but do nearly everthing an attacking player can do like support and so on, and some time even defend if possible.

This poll is actually unfair. Most are influence by only what they see in EPL. Henry the best striker of all time? You have to be joking. I am not saying he is not good but he is not even in the same league with Maradona or Pele. Henry have not even won any significant trophies. Where were he in last years world cup?

QUOTE(gigantic_missile @ Sep 16 2006, 06:59 PM) during from when i started watching football, I had to reply to this one .i voted for cantona Pele and maradona probably are good last time coz the other players are not up to their standards, compared to the epl nowadays, mostly are equally matched. In Pele and Maradonna's day , the standard was actually a LOT HIGHER than the pathetic excuse for football we have today . And let's see - Pele's peers : Tostao , Jarzinho , Carlos Alberto , Gerson , Gerd Muller , Uwe Seeler , Beckenbauer , Overath , Vogts , Maier , Best , Charlton , Law , Moore , Hurst, Hunter and so on Maradonna's peers : Burruchaga , Careca , Paserella , Ardilles , Batistuta ( though I think he's crap ) , Mattheus , Brehme , Klinsmann , Haesler , Reuter , Kohler , Van basten , Rijkaard , Gullit , Baggio , Baresi , Vialli . In short , most of the best players EVER to grace the world stage " the other players are not up to their standards, compared to the epl nowadays " my A$$ ! Not only that but the play was much much rougher ! many red cards today were not even fouls in their day . Pele was kicked so hard in 1966 , he had to be carried off the field , but he came back to star in that great '70 team . Same thing happened to Maradonna in 82 and he came back to star in 86. You think darling Beckham could do that ? People like this make me laugh , great free entertainment when people shoot without bullets. |

Maradona or Pele didn't play in EPL before, so Titi is not in the same league with them.in world cup final, France vs Italy. for his trophies search wikipedia. QUOTE(Mie @ Jul 19 2007, 01:35 AM) Maradona or Pele didn't play in EPL before, so Titi is not in the same league with them. scoring over 1,200 goals and the youngest player ever to score(WC).in world cup final, France vs Italy. for his trophies search wikipedia. Thierry Henry youngest player to score a hattrick in WC, his goal against sweden was voted one of the best ever. and the only player to win 3 WC. none other than pele! he was already retired long before i was born, but heck! can catch a glimpse of his genius at youtube. watch all his videos and let it be the judge. most of the players now are good actor and diver. as i mentioned. diving kill the game! henry dives, droba, cr, robben, totti, nilsterooy.... now show me the active player that never dive in the field? the greatest striker of all time never dive! just look at his video. he was so good opponents have to whacked his legs as the only way to get the ball from him. dribbling, running with the ball, passing, shooting, heading.....he was in the class of his own. even after he get whacked, he try to maintain his balanced and still carry the ball forward. never give up. like ronaldo when he still play for psv eindhoven and barca. for those never see him in action, browsed to www.youtube.com and search for pele. of course pele and henry or cantona are 3 different players which has their own weakness and strength. but my vote goes to pele for being a true football genius! |

QUOTE(PrinceOfPersia @ Jul 19 2007, 12:48 PM) romario was a good striker but the way he count his goals to 1000th was suspected. not only play at kampung during evening but also when he was junior player too. wonder if this includes his goals scored in kindergarten playing grounds..... |

QUOTE(Ken @ Jul 19 2007, 06:01 PM) agree! to be the best, player have to prove their worth, not only in club but national and international level.furthermore, they have to performed to the highest level over and over again. not just in a few games or a season. maradona was fine but he was on drugs anyway. henry and cantona doesn't performed up to expectation in international level. out! pele the king |

for me, its got to be George Best, which i don't why it is not listed here..
only thing is, he didn't had the opportunity like others to play in international competitions.. n the other thing is, he retired early.. if u want to watch pele's video, y not u try look for Best's vids.. no offense though, i like pele too.. Best once sarcastically quoted: "If I had been born ugly, you would never have heard of Pel" check out his quotes too, he is one of the funniest footballer too! the famous quote from the supporter though were even better: " Maradona good, Pele Better, George Best!" just something to share with about George Best: http://www.manutdzone.com/legends/GeorgeBest.htm This post has been edited by JuNz-V: Mar 20 2008, 01:57 PM |

a lot of ppl are voting based on former players of their supported teams. Eric Cantona is nowhere near the best striker in the world and Henry had flair but his scoring rate wasnt even as good as Wrighty's. Im an Arsenal fan but I voted for Mr. Fatman himself aka Hand of God Maradona. Pele scored a lot of tap ins la.

Not me...Maradona, yes... Romario comes close coz you just can't train a player like him...he's a natural...he can be completely invisible for 89 mins, but then out of the blue, he pops one in...brilliant! Added on April 21, 2008, 4:38 pmCareca would have been another choice for the 80's... The 90's should belong to Ronaldo (original Ronaldo, the Brazilian)... » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « Shouldn't Ian rush be included in that list. He was a prolific goal scorer during his playing career more so with Liverpool. Although he didn't fare too well in the international stage because of his country. He offer alot beside goal scoring threat by defending the opponent's own half with his closing in. Which is what Torres is doing at the moment for Liverpool. This post has been edited by qspn: Apr 21 2008, 04:49 PM |

Never saw players like pele, maradona, cruff and van basten in acion before. Other in the list hardly also hardly seen (Exp: roberto baggio in 1994 and 1998 cameo wc) This post has been edited by kyle9: Apr 21 2008, 05:10 PM |

Won't believe the maturity of this thread if it's not Pele or Maradona, in those days there is no such thing as diving/fall until you really send them tumbling. True footballers.

Why is Cantona even in the list?!...
Is he suppose to be a striker?! Manc fans care to clarify?! My take is still with Maradona. I've no say about Pele though he is a legend; cos I never watch him play. But Maradona, not many players currently can match is agility and center of gravity. Not to mention skills. |

wow, the poll is definitely biased towards the viewpoint of club based supporters. judge the players subjectively, by their achievements and contributions, not over irrelevant stuff like which club they play for. imho cantona and henry are right at the top due to the huge amount of manu and arsenal supporters.how could they eclipse players like pele and maradona?hey, if someone inserted ian rush on the polling list, i bet he would be in the top three too.

Heck, put Torres, Tevez or Adebayor there and they'll get a fair number of votes themselves. Football wasn't invented this century people.

Henry is still understandable. But Cantona?!.....Is he even a striker for starters?!Why I mentioned Henry is still understandable is because like I mentioned in my previous post whereby Pele might be a legend, but personally I never seen him play and the playing field during his era is different. However, I've seen Maradona and most of the other players thus my vote goes to Maradona and yes, he's a wolrd recognised legend too. Thus I do agree with MobyDick whereby if it's not Pele or Maradona....there might be something bias going on. Maybe the youngster do not know who these ppl are. Even so, I'm so incline to vote for Romario. But we can only choose one. Romario is also a class of his own and top scorer with 1000 goals albeit controversially claimed. in my opinion a great striker scores many different type of goals and score it with beauty and talent...if most goals are from just tap ins and headers ...then its a boring striker...

Pele. no doubt about it even though i was growing up watching the british premiere league
while catching up with those greats on papers, internet@youtube maradona was up there with the the rest of the legend but his involvements with drugs is a bad example. imo, lineker is better than shearer. shevchenko shouldn't be on the list cuz' his international records doesn't up to the mark. henry's record with france wasn't as good as micheal platini even though platini play as a midfield. emilio butragueno is more skillfull than raul. baggio? thanks....but i'll pick paolo rossi anytime even though he is a winger converted as a cf. btw, international and club performance should be the benchmark for any striker. err.... gerd muller wasn't on the list eh? Here is a wild card entry that I'm sure many won't remember. He featured for Cameroon in the 1990 World Cup at the tender age of 38! He even managed to score 4 goals in that tournament. Not only that, he returned in 1994 and became the oldest player ever to feature in the World Cup at 42! His trademark hip breaking dance celebrations at the corner flag were a sight to behold indeed.
Ladies and gentlemen, introducing ROGER MILLA! Check out his goal scoring record at club level QUOTE Just to sidetrack, anyone ever wonder why Higuita didn't get shot upon returning to Columbia when Andreas Escobar did after scoring an own goal for the USA in the 1994 World Cup, resulting in a 1-0 loss? Seems allegations that he is associated to a drug cartel in Columbia are true then. This post has been edited by Duke Red: Apr 24 2008, 11:51 AM Attached image(s) |

OT, Escobar is rumoured to be shot dead because of a certain drug lord losing big on that particular game's bet.Gambling is seriously affecting the beauty of football. Take Seria A for eg. No offence but I wouldn't classify them as being 'legendary'. They may have played well for Man Utd but legends play well regardless of club or country. Andy Cole was woeful for England and as for Yorke, well... Trinidad aren't exactly regulars at big tournaments. I would place Alan Shearer above either of them and even then I won't say that Shearer is a legend.

I'm as surprised as some of you. Henry was awesome for Arsenal no doubt but he hasn't made the same impact at Barcelona, or even France for that matter. Greats like Pele and Maradona virtually carried their respective teams on their shoulders. Napoli was a totally different team without Maradona in the side. They both not only set the stage alight at club level but on the international stage as well. Suffice to say, both Cantona and Henry had their best spells in England but that was it.
To each his own but I think more consideration has to be given. There is life outside the Premiership. |

i am not surprised by the poll outcome at all.
just like me, most of the voters growing up watching the british premier league. become obsessed by henry and the current active players. cantona of course is like an icon for manchester united. after watching the videos at youtube and reading from internet, i come to the conclusion that pele was the greatest. maradona could be a close second but his involvement with drugs is a negative factor. and there are a few others from old school which worth mentioning; gerd muller, de stefano, puskas, eusebio and fontaine. they are all legend in their own way. |

QUOTE(mancy @ Apr 28 2008, 02:00 PM) he was simply awesome during his stint in psv eindhoven and barcelona.but he was anonymous / unfit during the 98 wc final. rumour had it that he was playing cuz' of the contract fulfillment between nike and cbf back than. and he wasn't as consistent as pele or maradona in international games. |
