This most basic thing to consider is the resolutions that your target audience's PC are using. A very good example is that if you designing fix width websites which your main audience is from the corporate side (where PC is only for paperwork and printing), the safest things is that you should set as 800x600 since most of the small and big companies still running at older Windows (eg 98, ME)...

But in your case whereby your main audience are creative people and tech-savvy where most likely they are running the latest OS (eg XP), i recommend 1024 x 768 is the right dimension for your site.
