Hi all, this is my 1st post here and i feel so happy to see a huge family of tur/tor Lovers here. smile.gif
I'm an owner of 2 lil ST since last month. I have several question to ask you guys about ST, please enlighten me.

My question as below: icon_question.gif
1. What will effect the ST if High Protein feeded to them for long period? Prymaid similar to right animal in first pic and accerated growth and if not enough calcium supplement - soft shell

2. Is fibre their priority vitamin? and what is other following vitamins? Fiber not consider vitamin , Vit B , D3 are the priotity

3. How do i get to know the ST gender? After 3 inch long most ( 70 - 80 % )can be sexed correctly

4. Do all ST's shell looks like what is in the first picture below when they growth? Is this call uneven growth? Yes but some from Sri-lankan locale have that no matter whats being fed

5. Why my ST's shell don't looks shiny comparing to the second and third picture below?
Try to polish with Azoo brand shell polish

6. How many days do you guys bath your ST once? and how many minutes per time? Babies are bath more often - everyday , bigger one 2-3 days once , adults - up to once a week

7. Is sunbath necessary to the ST? what is the duration per time? Yes , unless you supplement with Vitamin D3 , 15 - 1 hr per session

Your helpful replies to the above are highly appreciated. Your welcome !!

TY & Best Regards,
Jack

Question again....!!! tongue.gif
1. Where to get the Azoo brand polish?(I live in Subang)  I am from Sabah and now in Australia So cant help you on that !!! Alternative way , wash them with water than polish with cooking oil !!!

2. What you meant in Q4 is some Sri Lanka ST born to have that kind of shell? No way to prevent it? sad.gif Most Sri-lankan have raised scutes in their gene BUT how to tell them apart I don know how !!!

3. How to do sunbath? >.< and do it how often? >.< Sunbath just leave them out in the sun to be bath by sun light / ray lah !!! If small and without - UV lighting or Vitamin D3 as often as once per day !!! early morning sun after the dew dry up is good or late evening sun !!!

Please  icon_question.gif , I'm a big noob. tongue.gif
TY & best regards,
Jack

*
QUOTE(uzairi @ Dec 14 2007, 02:44 AM)
Post a picture, we can help you determine the gender.

About the nails, we need to see what species first only we can tell you what you can do about it. smile.gif

Welcome to TTT family! wish.gif
*
Ya like Uzairi say depending on the species ie Male RES ( most common turtle species kept in Malaysia ) Female Indian Star ( hind limbs nails supposed to be longer when they are older ) .....etc

Post some pictures here , include some information ie Age , size and we will try our best to help !!!!

do anyone provide a small water area for ur star to soak itself?
*
If you want to set up a mini tank forget about soaking area Do the soaking outside in another container

- In a mini tank , dont use the basking light ( cook the tortoise as it has no place to run if it get too hot )unless low wattage used ie 40 w light on dimmer
or use undertank heater or bask them outside in lawn or balcony every day or every other day to get their Vit D 3 and to heat up !!!

I dont encourage any container smaller than say 2 feet for 1 - 2 tortoise !!!

But hey my son keep a pair of the hatchling Indian Star in a foot long Exo Terra Faunarium with a hide only with no side effect BUT all needs like Vit D3 are either supplemented or brought out to sun Soaking and food consumed in another container !!! Heated provided thru a under tank heater on rainy day !!!

Thanks camillenoir..

The 1 i m getting is around 6' in carapace length...does it still considered as hacthling at such length?
does that means i do not need the basking light..
*
No matter the size they still need the basking light for 2 purposes
- UV for Vitamin D3 for ( converting calcium to good use ) bone maintaince or growth
- Basking for temp. regulation for food digestion and general well-being !!!

This morning I went to creepy crawlies pet shop in summit USJ to buy my basking lamp. Since there is no customer in the shop, we started chatting. When i told him i got an albino soft shell he seem to be a bit shock and wish me luck. When I asked further, he said most of the albino soft shell came from Johor and at most it will survive for about 1 week only. Anybody interested in an albino RES..he said he sold two recently.
*
QUOTE(camillenoir @ Jan 7 2008, 01:11 PM)
i think you are getting albino Pelodiscus sinensis (Chinese soft shell)..

safer to get bigger specimens as hatchlings are very fragile, furthermore they are albino and can't bask that much..
*
That one week is due to them being hatchling or below 1.5 inch in size but yours is close to 6 inch ( sub-adult) thus more hardy but one could still kill them in a matter of days if things are not followed or provided ie water too cold ( fungus infection) coarse substrate causing scratches ....etc
