How can u sunbath them at nite when there's no sun ? For the uvb lamp, its advisable to turn it on during the day at 12pm-6pm preferably.

QUOTE(LEVIATHAN @ Feb 23 2007, 11:13 AM) wah LOL, yours are the weird one because i never see a male RES with a concave body. only me ke have concaved plastron RES? but siyesly mates, the plastron shallowed inside to body. later i'll post the pictor. but must be hard to spot from pictos. maybe when we do gath i can bring them to show u all. when i rub the lower part, i can directly differentiate male and female. im a good owner, so the res develop as what they should. Silicon might cause a problem too when the turtle chew them.

QUOTE(sayasebuk @ Feb 27 2007, 10:10 AM) do they chew silicone? if im not mistaken even aquarium tanks are using silicone to hold the glass together. Never saw them chew it. Since the silicone is non-toxic i guess the danger would just be impaction right? They do when they can, like what sam said they might have the opportunity to claw them out especially from a long-used aquarium.QUOTE(SAMPERTH @ Feb 27 2007, 12:05 PM) They might chew on the silicon surface which are accessible to them the best they can do to the tank's silicon are to claw them out but RES and Boxie are not strong enough (both type of Snapper on the other hand are strong enough to clawed out the silicon holding the tank ) My snapper clawed up almost 50% of the silicon. |

You can keep them alone, just that you need to play with them sometimes to avoid loneliness.

QUOTE(Savor_Savvy @ Mar 25 2007, 02:36 PM) Howdy, Welcome..New here to TTT thread. Just got myself 2red eared slider, one male and one female. Still thinking of what to name them. Before this i had 4-5same red eared slider, but all went to heaven ord QUOTE(Savor_Savvy @ Mar 25 2007, 02:41 PM) One question here... Its better not to let them free. You can adopt them to me.If one day u feel that u can't take care of ur babies, and would like to free them, where's the suitable place to do it without them getting hurt? QUOTE(Savor_Savvy @ Mar 29 2007, 08:15 PM) Aiya...not more than 1week, one ord died. Become like stone (hard) with the hand and leg out, and i check it's stomach, no sign of breathing. So sad. I duno why, but since i bought it, it always sleep and sleep n sleep, and not active. Maybe ord sick, i duno. The other one is very active until now. Sigh...left one without partner. You need to get a proper setup for them to stay healthy. Basking lamp, calcium supplement and multivitamin is a must for them. Daily staple food also must be correct, high fiber and low protein such as sawi. |

QUOTE(hwa107 @ Apr 2 2007, 05:17 PM) the white board is actually ceramic tile which is turned up side down, it's good for tortoise dining place, and the rough surface is good for trimming tortoise's nails. Correct. and regarding your star head, usually star tortoise will knock their head up n down when they get nervous QUOTE(LEVIATHAN @ Apr 4 2007, 01:45 PM) hi all. i got a sad story to tell. I can see that you already found the potential adopter. Hope you can get a chance to pet them again in the near future. the story is, i want to let go my average 3-4 inch RES (Trachemys scripta elegans). currently only 4 left. 3 male, 1 female (if im not mistaken). the reasons is, im moving to puchong. hardly able to play with them now. and i feel bad for that. plus my tank now seem small for them. earlier i want to let go to mother nature, but im afraid they wont be able to survive the real, brutal environment. real world is scary u know. the current condition is great, feed once daily in the early morning with wardleys. biweekly oil their shell with gamat oil and weekly check their condition (eyes, limbs, shell) and sunbath every saturday for an hour. very active, react vigorously to a shaking food container. i feed them by hand, 1 pallet at a time. they always bite my finger, but quickly release it as they know it's finger. very tame, i can rub their head and geletek their leher like kucing. but their bites are hard and nyummy. they hardly eat vege. i want to let them go for free, provided the future owner promise me he/she will take wonderful care of them. PM me if interested. let go only the RES. err my location of hand will be putrajaya and bangi only. help me to help them. |

Like what camillenoir said, better to save more and buy the bigger specimen as they are more hardy and less prone to fall sick. No point buying them cheap and might endup dead 1 months later. There's a friend of mine here who bought 5 small ones and i think 2 of them died. Another case where 2 of his only star tortoise died. Both of them having those rm68 specimens FYI.

QUOTE(titansulcata @ Apr 16 2007, 06:33 AM) Owh, will let u know if i come across nice ones.QUOTE(jcs_5 @ Apr 16 2007, 11:15 AM) Hi titan, crazymouse & others, They are some successful stories but not that much as stars that are under 3 inch are very hard to take care of and some of them are already in bad shape when u got them so the chances of recovering them is little. Better to keep more money and get bigger ones..thanks for sharing your experiences. Looks pretty grim for the babies ... Then who has some sucessfully stories on stars ? |

QUOTE(titansulcata @ Apr 17 2007, 08:27 PM) sad... they used to be so much fun. eating, playing together... sigh Mind you both of them have different requirements. anyway, my sulcata is much easier to care. he just eat eat eat. his tank is next to star... so the temperature and humidity should be the same... food also the same (only sawi from day 1 and some calcium powder once in a while) it is also very active. it digs a lot. it knocks on the tank to remind me food is needed QUOTE(titansulcata @ Apr 17 2007, 10:18 PM) Only aldabras and they cost a bomb too. |
