Connecting the Gear S to NON-SAMSUNG Phones

http://forum.xda-developers.com/gear-s/gen...onnect-t2934307

QUOTE
Today someone told me via Google Plus how to install Gear Manager on non-Samsung mobiles. His name is Serge Berig. So 100% Credits go to him. I am just posting here what he posted in Google Plus. His Phone is Moto X and Mine in LG G2. Worked perfectly fine.

My Test Scenarios:
1. LG G2 D802 Rooted. Rooting is not required as his Moto X is unrooted.
2. I am using a separate SIM on Gear S.
3. I have disabled mobile data and Wifi on both Gear S and my mobile

How it Works:

1. Download Gear Manager Latest Version and GearManagerStub.apk from this link:
https://www.mediafire.com/folder/e7h23e12rzesi/Gear_Manager
(Credit goes to the uploader)

2. Download these APK Files:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B3uemtAJSY...iew?usp=sharing
(Credit goes to Serge)

3. Move these files to your phone.

4. 1st install Gear Manager, then GearManagerstb.apk, then all remaining apks.

5. Open Gear Manager on your phone and viola. It connects, Resets your Gear S in case you used it before and as far as i checked everything Works

I did not test each and everything. As far as i know most thing works. Previously i had "Connecting Forever" Issue, now it connects straight away. I am using my Gear S as complete independent to Mobile Calls and SMS from my Mobile. I have not set any forwarding options or notification for Call and SMS from my mobile to Gear S.

Pls post your results

What's not Working:
1. Can't Transfer Music/Images from Phone
2.

USING THE GEAR WITH NO PHONE

ROOT

This XDA user managed to root his Gear S. However, I am not certain of the utility of rooting the Gear S.

QUOTE
I was successful rooted Gear S for DoCoMo Japan version.
I think that it can be rooted in the same procedure in the other models .

1. Download firmware
2. Extract tar.md5
3. Mount rootfs.img in Linux
4. copy files (attached file - GearS_Rooted.tar)
cp su ${mountfolder}/bin/su
chmod 755 ${mountfolder}/bin/sh
cp vconf-init ${mountfolder}/etc/rc.d/init.d/vconf-init
chmod 755 ${mountfolder}/etc/rc.d/init.d/vconf-init
cp rc.local.service ${mountfolder}/etc/systemd/system
5 umount rootfs.img
6 tar -H ustar -c rootfs.img > rootfs.img.tar
7 md5sum rootfs.img.tar >> rootfs.img.tar
8 rename rootfs.img.tar.md5
9 Push Gear S Button while Reboot
10 select Download mode
11 write rootfs.img.tar.md5 with odin

Attached File  GearS_Rooted.tar ( 60k ) Number of downloads: 146

Really interested where samsung is going with their wearables... Guess no point now in buying the gear 2 and samsung will be wise not to make gear 3 as there is no point , is like going backwards...

Still the major issue is only compatible with samsung phones... which is SAD as not everyone in the whole world uses only samsung in their life...

There are methods to pair with non-Samsung phones.

Will post in a couple of days.

Even if you don't pair it, treat it as a feature phone like one of the Nokias from about 5 years ago.

Congratulate on the thread. smile.gif

I like it so much, it is far better than first generation Gear except the stupid charger. As for the GPS inside dunno it is suppose working like that need data or it actually just software bugs, hope not the hardware bugs.

Some shot on the Gear S. I find it fashionable nice, not over big in actual. wink.gif

You still can use it even without a Samsung phone. Make it as a feature phone like what we have done for the past few weeks. smile.gif

Nice a thread for Gear S thumbup.gif

Due to my work environment, the writing at the back of gear S already faded. I applied idefense screen protector (cut it myself) saved a lot of times from scratches.

Right now there are no IM apps for Tizen. Its main purpose is to receive notifications, make/receive calls and sms.

I think Android Wear is also the same, only receiving notifications.

Yes it supports 3G up to H+.

It will last you at least 4 hours if you make some calls with 3G on all the time. If you use it as a GPS, max would be 2.5 to 3hrs.

You have to think of it as a featurephone from 5 years ago. Same limitations apply, and it is only a 300mah battery compared to 1000+ mah of those Nokias. You still had to charge it daily and watch your battery all the time.

If you use it as a watch and notifications device, it will last 6-10 hours on 3G, maybe 18-36 hours on bluetooth, even more with Power Saving mode.

You can't install standard android apps as it is Tizen.

For the moment they is no single IM apps for it.

Without pairing with Samsung phone, it is half dead as you only can do Opera Web browsing.

After pair with Samsung phone, you can only see notification but not reply. The only can reply is messenger (need Samsung phone).

At initial setup you already need a Samsung phone before you can make it standalone.

If you are thinking pairing with others phone, to stop all hassle thing, it's better you don't purchase it.

yea better not then.... tizen is a good OS but app support is very bad for it because damn samsung limits only to their phones so why would app developers wanna build apps for a small minority gear S owners...

i keep switching phone brands but always stick to android and i think android wear is a very useless OS at the moment... its so limiting in what it can do....

Apple watch seems to be a fine middle ground between android wear and yet it has a speaker so you can talk using thee watch... But then again its only for apple product which i dont tend to go bck into....

That is what I said. Treat it as a feature phone. You insert a SIM card and can answer calls or reply messages right away. And also can browse on it. Due to limitation of Tizen, thus only can receive notifications from other apps. Android Wear also functions the same and maybe Apple Watch.

Finally got the GPS to work without bluetooth to the phone.

It seems that the GPS should be working, but it depends on the app.

S-Health worked to pinpoint location, but Here does not.

I suspect this is due to Here built on the assumption that the GPS will always be on the phone for a companion device.

Various folks on XDA have posted either the GPS works flawlessly, or works for some situations and not for others. The recent update also affected some of them.

Nonetheless, it has full blown GPS.

Battery life is an issue if using as standalone. 4 hours max with 3G WiFi bluetooth GPS. If push notifications only I'm able to get more than 10 hours. Other than that works like a normal android phone with small screen size.

nitemare as you imagine running full android on a 1.6 inch 'square' display .... if you wanna type the keyboard take up almost the whole screen ..... some apps dont even scale to the display .... good luck even typing on the screen that small and in the end you will just think that you hv a small screen phone...
Little to no software updates from the makers at all since launching... basically its a dead product on arrival... the ompany even moved on to more 'normal' watches ala notifications only type of watches...

plus it has one of the worst charging docks in wearable history.... god...

there are some good things , it runs spotify greatly but since battery life isnt that great you wont use that long anyways....

At the very least you have a choice albeit with reduced functionality. That other platform won't even give you a choice.

I don't see a point browsing on a 2" screen though, except in an emergency.

Anyone who already have both Note 4 & Gear S willing to give away the 20% discount codes FOC in Note 4 Galaxy Life Apps for me to purchase new Gear S or with a min fees?

I have 2 phones and only use one of it most of the time but still need to carry the second phone around. I plan to get this watch to replace my second phone this weekend after viewing the demo unit.

suddenly the watch looks like those RM10 China made LED watch.. haha. personal opinion. hehe

btw got my my g flex working with gear s. found some issues :

1. here for gear can't log on location ( previously works when I paired with note 2)

2. wechats voice chat doesn't have sound..cant record can't listen. probably it's the phone voice calls are connected to hear s? only when I turn off bt then only goes back to normal.

3. when i played too long with gear s. it gets a little warm. then gear s will automatically go into a cool down mode with a digital clock n emergency call. for maybe 1 minute.

Hi, I got my Gear S since Mon.

The only complain is reply from gear is limited to certain apps only.

Wish it has torchlight, so that you don't need to pull out phone to shine something that drop in your car etc.

Where can I get screen protector for it?

I think they have it in Singapore. Otherwise you can cut one yourself from those notebook vinyl films.

If you are on Maxis, or maybe Umobile, you could get a multisim plan and really leave your phone at home.

However the expectation of the Gear S that it is like a featurephone Nokia from about 5 years ago. Just that it's really cool to have one on your wrist.

I could suggest that you port out to Maxis and take the Surfmore 50 with a multisim.

2Gb data, calls and sms pay-as-you-go, but my usage of calls and sms is incredibly low so this suits me perfectly.

If that's the case then the Maxis OnePlan should suit you, since it is unlimited calls to all services.

I'm not promoting Maxis though but for a device like the Gear S, multisim FTW.

Just found out that there have been phones in a watch form factor for a while

http://www.burgsmartwatches.com/index.php?...ategory&path=59

I have also seen a wrist sized basic phone from China about 1 year ago, but it was just that, a phone.

These are devices that do not integrate to any ecosystem and are purely standalone, much like any basic phone.

Devices like the Gear S and Android Wear are full blown computing platforms, and the plus on the Gear S is that is has a phone as well.

I agree with this reviewer, too little of everything.

At least the Gear S is trying to fit an extra function to a smartwatch and it is still able to hold battery life equivalent with the others.

A rather balanced review from Android Headlines

http://www.androidheadlines.com/2014/11/fe...ung-gear-s.html

The first commenter also makes a very rational pitch on why it is so big, comparing it to the Note 1 when it first arrived

QUOTE
Good review, but I think it follows the pattern of several other reviews that seem to judge this unique device by how much it doesn't look and feel like a watch. It reminds me of the early reviews of the Note 1 which almost universally penalized it heavily because it was "too big" to be a cell phone. 3 years later, and we have a new phone category, the phablet, and virtually every top phone uses a larger display. To me, an early adapter, the S is the farthest thing from a smartwatch...it is more of a wrist communicator. As Samsung states "It's our first network-connected wearable". The S is simply a wearable device that allows one to stay connected without lugging around your phablet so you don't miss calls, texts and emails. If you are into fitness, you can listen to music and monitor steps, heart rate, etc., without taking along your phone. If you work in a large office (or house) you can go out of bluetooth range and not miss anything. On a bike ride, or at the beach, the S is easier and safer to carry than your phablet. In addition, in my area around Washington, DC, bluetooth headsets are ubiquitous in offices, on mass transit, in cars, and in gyms and restaurants. That is exactly how the Gear S and other wearables should be used...not by holding one's arm up to talk. Regarding apps, several reviewers have noted the limited Tizen apps; however, I have yet to see a list of the must have apps they would use on a wearable like the S. Often, Samsung is criticized for throwing in too much software...in this case they have limited the apps to those that are most likely to be used regularly. Great decision Sammy! Just open up the S to all android phones and you may actually have a winner!
Nice one for those who want an in depth review.

*
Saw these type of 'phone watch' since few years back but they are so tacky and design is utterly ugly.

It should be possible...at least 10 hours is doable.

One thing is you can wear it with the dock. Looks dorky I know.... tongue.gif

Thanks, good to know that. I am planning to get one but all shops do not offer the 20% galaxy life apps discount. I'll wait for Lelong prices to go further down

Samsung is cheating on that 20% discount. Now Samsung said need buy Note 4 and Gear S together same time to entitle that 20% discount.

If not willing to give that promotion then don't do it. Samsung is real pathetic!

Exactly and some shop even ignore the promotion. It label as all Samsung store but if the store you went not given and you call the rubbish 1800 88 9999 and the CS will mention to you that outlet not entitle.

Calling 1800 88 9999 is just waste of time, every call give you different answer and never help consumer but instead the shop. They only know to said sorry the max. That it!
Not only the 1800 88 9999 is rubbish, the email helpdesk also same, you get different reply answer from different CS, this is what respond I get on previous complain regarding I didn't get the invitation. Whatever Samsung Malaysia do is cover it own ass and not helping consumer at all.

Now I know why Samsung being call as Samseng already as it do really is on it services.

If used purely standalone, you can use the phone, sms and web functions. No notifications will be received since there is no paired device to send notifications from.

If paired with a non-samsung phone, you can have some notifications but I'm not sure what works or not.

There's a thread on XDA for this, pinned to page 1 of this thread.

S-health probably, since the pedometer is always on.

Music player also probably usable.

Here Navigator has some kind of bug which I first reported on XDA and many around the world have confirmed that it is also not working without bluetooth on some ROM versions.

The more i use this, the more i love it. Being using it for spotify listening. So far so good. Battery life is good. At first i thought i'm gonna sell this for Moto 360, i changed my mind.

Being using my Gear as my secondary phone for now.

Any idea on how to install Gear S app via sideload?

Hi, you need to download the map directly from Here within the Gear S. It's 200Mb+ I can't recall...

Yes, GPS does not seem to work for Here, and this has been reported worldwide. It seems that Here worked for some early firmware version in some European countries, but later updates borked it.

I posted a thread in XDA about this and it is fairly active.

You can receive notifications, but probably can't install other Tizen apps without some manual workaround.

I just realized the charging cradle for this thing hold 300mah battery on its own. So it also can be a portable powerbank for the watch.

Hi it won't fully pair without a Samsung phone.

You also can't install any IM apps like Whatsapp, but you can install "Notifications for Gear S" app in Playstore to get the reply functionality from Whatsapp notifications.

See page 1 for links to XDA showing how to pair without a Samsung.

It doesn't need to be a Note4. A Note 3 will also do, or any recent Samsung mid-to-flagship phone.

hi guys,

My strap for Galaxy S is white in colour. As you know, white get DIRTY very easily. Then after long, it will turn yellowish.

How do you guys maintain/wash/clean your watch ?
some say , use toothpaste.
some say, use baking powder.

Your input please

I think baking powder is fine, another solution is buy a black strap and replace it.

u were like me thought everything would work well with a non galaxy and purchase gear s on impulse and now I ended up with note 4 just because of gear s. hahah. was eyeing for g3 for sometime. in the end need to forgo it.

See page 1 for links to XDA showing how to pair without a Samsung.

u using notification for gear s too..check out the pic. was ur notifications like that too? showing 3 times? is there any settings? do I need to tick notifications for gear s under gear managers notifications?

I do not have the multiple notification problem, since I only allow once.

You need to only allow it once, either in Gear Manager, or Notifications only. The interface in Notifications is horrible, but just disallow those notifications which you have allowed in Gear Manager.

Eg, if you allow Whatsapp in Notifications, then don't allow Whatsapp in Gear Manager.

Hi all, Samsung USA has published a table about email replying functionality on the Gear S.

My interpretation of the table is that it needs an Android 4.4.4 device for full email functionality on the Gear S.

Yes. However you may need to subscribe to the Call Forwarding service of your telco. If you are on Maxis you can get a multim 1 line where you have the same number and can swap between your watch or phone.

Yes you can use it standalone with a SIM, it is a phone anyway.

However, if you want to leave your main phone at home and just use the watch and receive calls from your phone, then you need Call Forwarding activated.

Since I don't use this feature due to my multisim, I am quite certain you need to subscribe to Call Forwarding service from your telco.

The XDA Gear S thread actually has a long discussion on this, but I didn't follow since they are mainly talking about US telcos, and also I don't use this scenario.

The scenarios are as follow:

1. Connect via Bluetooth
Can make calls and receive from the MAIN phone, IF you set "Auto Connect". Can receive notifications from main phone.

2. Connect via Bluetooth
IF set to Mobile Network Always On, then the watch is a fully separate phone, but you can receive notifications from main phone, and make and receive sms on watch separately.

3. Remotely connected
Same as 2 above

3. Not connected
Watch and phone are separate devices, no notifications from phone.

I believe most people are using scenario 1.

I use 2 and 3 most of the time, sometimes 1.

Very good post on XDA about why Gear S, vs Omate TrueSmart and Neptune Pine

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.p...965&postcount=2

QUOTE
For me, since I already owned a TrueSmart and used it daily for 8 months, I knew that my next watch was going to require one of two features... First was a higher resolution display. Many of the popular apps for android were almost impossible to utilize properly. Second was a larger screen for mostly the same reasons.

Utter was the saving grace for the TS... Which allowed me to use many features that were otherwise unusable. For example, the keyboard was extremely tough to use. Even the Fleksy app... But in the end, many times I found the standard font sizes were too small to read on the 1.5" screen.

I ordered and tried a Neptune... And that was just a monster on my wrist...

When I previewed the Gear S, I was most impressed in many ways. I realized that a watch should not be a carbon copy of the features currently standard on full sized smartphones. What I used most on the TS, was already built in the Tizen OS. And the remote feature, was truly one of the better advancements I've seen in the wearables niche market.

I've had the Gear S for three weeks now, and have yet to find something I'm missing, as far as apps go. The Tizen store quantity and quality is bleak, for sure. But, that will change slowly... But will never be equal to Play or Apple stores.

All in all, the SmartWatch of choice is completely dependent on you and your needs. Figure out what you are buying one for, and what apps are absolutely necessary to your daily needs. This should help you make this tough decision.

So much hate for Samsung:

http://www.engadget.com/2014/12/01/samsung-gear-s-review/

I think if it were another logo, there would be such a gush of devotional praise for the rectangular design and Swiss-watchmaker beating blandness beauty and overcrowded minimalist homescreen.

Ptuuuuiiiiiiiiiiii

The comments are a good read, and mostly rational ones too.

A comment from the Engadget article I posted earlier:

I took the liberty of making some highlights.

by ddogdad

QUOTE
Every reviewer hates the Gear S and 99% of actual users who comment, love it. Seems like a real disconnect. I wonder why?

More and more it seems the reviews on sites like this, Cnet, Android Central, etc. are of little or no value. Lots of times the information is incomplete or just plain wrong.

The value of the review is in the comments section where actual users relate their experiences.

While the Gear S can take the place of your phone, its not designed to. The Gear S IMHO functions best as an adjunct to my GS5. I can leave my phone for an hour or two, just wear my watch and receive calls, make calls, and keep up with messages and notifications. It not meant to be used to compose lengthy emails, play games, write books or load apps.

If you have a tiny wrist, you can still wear it. Its light enough. But if you think its too big, just don't buy it. Its not a negative for everyone.
Build quality is excellent, the screen is great, battery life is very good. Calls from your phone can be routed to your wrist through your Samsung account.
A Moto 360 has a huge feature overlap and really just saves you from having to take your phone out of your pocket. With the Gear S, you don't need to always have your phone in your pocket. So if you rely on having your phone with you at all times to surf the web, compose long emails, don't have a Samsung phone running 4.3 or better, this isn't a device for you. Doesn't mean there is anything wrong with it, it just isn't for you. If you fall into that category, you shouldn't even be reviewing it.

Its like a mom with a minivan reviewing a 5 ton dump truck. She can do it, but it makes no sense. Same goes for this review.

I asked at a Samsung outlet earlier today, and they replied that you could buy it with the 20% off if you are an existing Note 4 owner.

Perhaps some outlets are being predatory.

Do not tap the redeem button in the Samsung app until you are in the shop as there is a 1 hour time frame. Once you tap the timer will start to count down and you have to be at the shop within this 1 hour else it will expire.

Just when I thought of utilising the 20% discount today, I went to the Samsung store at City Square JB and this sales lady tell me that the discount is over and she scroll through the Galaxy Life app to show me that the discount voucher is not displayed there..so mean no more and further tell me that it is while stock last..I told her the voucher states promotion is up to 31.12.2014 and T&C never states that it is on while stock last..show her my saved voucher laugh.gif

Then she went to ask her colleague and she told me oh promotion still valid..but even if you want we also dun have stock.. sweat.gif Earlier I also went to Samsung store at Permas Jaya Jusco and this sales guy also said the same thing that even if I want they also dun have stock.. doh.gif So I believe this people may have received directive from Samsung to hold off selling at discount price..So if you guys went to any Samsung store and manage to get to buy at discount..better buy now.. laugh.gif Tomorrow I try another shop and see this people also give same reason or not..lolz tongue.gif

Samsung outlets should have stock, but you may need to pay RRP 1099.

It's probably more expensive from South Korea.

Apparently the cheapest worldwide price is Malaysia, or the newly reduced price in the US for AT&T or Verizon I can't recall, at $299. However, US versions tend to be sim-locked to their carrier, and not worth the hassle. I'm not too sure about Korea, but they also have similar carrier-locking practices.

The US carriers do not have multisim functionality. In Malaysia, only Maxis does. I do not know which other global carriers offer this feature.

Yes you can use it without a SIM perfectly fine. It will work almost like any other Android Wear device.

You need an app on your Samsung phone, called Notifications for Gear S. This allows you to respond to notifications.

Currently it supports a large number of chat apps including Whatsapp but I'm not sure about Wechat. It does not support Kakaotalk.

If you do not install Notifications for Gear S, you can only view notifications.

It is a paid app, RM7.

Guys I have an inside friend who works for samsung and whom is also friends with the distributor. Every shop has black gear s that is in stock. The issue is that samsung doesn't care wat colour the shop sells as there is no percentage of each unit sold. The discount given is by samsung and to tell you the truth, individual shops do not fancy it that much. They are pushing off the white models because black will sell better even after the discount.

That one no body knows. Is it even true or typo? Maybe we should weigh it to confirm.

I own a white so i will weigh it at work since I have a micro scale there.

A quick post about Notifications for Gear S (NGS).

It is a paid app. Around $2 or 2.50 I think. I paid RM7.80 for it.

In the Settings (spanner icon), you will see a list of built in notification listeners.

It includes :
Gmail,
Whatsapp,
Telegram,
Line,
Spotbros,
Viber,
Hangouts
BBM
WeChat
Google Now
Facebook

By ticking any of these, you will get their notifications on your Gear S.

The primary advantage of using NGS is that you can REPLY to the notifications. By default, Gear S only lets you VIEW and clear the notification.

NGS is also smart enough to listen for other notification messages from your phone, and it will ask if you want to allow or decline to add it to NGS' notification messager.

Most of the time, you will DECLINE since these other notifications can also be controlled by the Gear Manager's Notifications>Manage Notifications menu.

Hope that helps.

Runtastic Runkeeper? I think there's an app in the Gear App store for it, so it should support.

Otherwise Nike+ or the built in S-Health is also good.

GPS works nicely for the health apps, but not Nokia Here.

Someone has written a nice tutorial on how to root the Gear S

However, I'm not entirely sure of the utility of this endeavour.

RM145 for a rubber strap is way too expensive.

I saw the 3-way charging cable going for RM139, and the reverse charging cable for RM99.

This is one REALLY BAD aspect of fapple which Samsung is copying.

Thread is quite since there aren't many groundbreaking things you can do with a device like this, whether Android Wear, Pebble or anything of this size.

At least this is still the only full fledged computing device with a phone, till someone else produces another one, or the Gear S2.

They do however have a PDF reader available now, though I can't for the life of me imagine why anyone would want to read a PDF on your wrist, except maybe as a display for a QR Code PDF.

Me too. Give up after trying so many outlets. Why Samsung want to make a white Smart watch is really mind boggling consider how easy it will get dirty. Unlike Smartphone which you can put on a casing to protect Smart watch cannot.

Managed to get one black gear s from samsung paradigm last week as i asked the shop before went to get it....i called other shop in gardens and nu sentral but all said no stock for black only white...the paradigm shop staff also told me that they had order more than 2 weeks but only 2 units received..and im lucky to get the last unit... rclxms.gif ..i believe now they will try to push the white unit everywhere so if u managed to encounter any shop that sell black unit..just grab it...

Nope...as i bought it in January so the promotion already ended...I couldn't find black color throughout the promotion period...what an irony... sweat.gif maybe you could give few calls to shops before going there...even direct d sell with slightly lower price than rrp but they have been without black color for so long already....

I really really don't understand that - in particular negative personal projections about a use case they personally don't currently see, the value proposition for it - "why would anybody want a phone on their wrist?" or negative comments about the appearance of a device they've never actually seen touched or worn up-close in real life ...."oh it looks massive and ugly - I'd never wear something like that on my wrist - i gave up wearing a watch years ago - who needs one when you have a phone in your pocket blah blah blah"
Almost 99.9% of everyone who has seen my Gear S (from grandmothers to little tiny kids) say the same thing "WTF! how cool is that - where can i get one?"
I"m like "its the best there is at the moment but is a bit buggy - hang on a bit longer - but whatever - look at this fantastic sad/grumpy cat watch face

You can install some cycling tracker from the Gear Apps store, or use the built in S-Health tracker. It measures your heart rate and also tracks your route.

The Nokia Here app is useless without the companion phone with you.

You may also try any of the other trackers like Nike and a couple of other apps.

Looking at your wrist or looking down on a phone while on a motorbike is very dangerous.

The best use of wearables while on a motorbike will be something like Google Glass smile.gif

I have a Gear S that I am using as a standalone device with its own sim card. So far however I cannot connect to the Internet. It has its own mobile internet access, and it can connect to wifi. I've tried to use the stock apps like Email and Weather, even asked my friend to write an app to access the Internet, nothing works. Other than that, I can make calls and receive sms with no issues. Planning to go to the service center to ask them about this problem.

Anyone have similar issues?

Only took a pic of this when I got it. Don't have any pictures of it on my arm.

Didn't check with them if they had any other colours. When I told them I wanted to redeem the strap, one of them went to the back and brought this out. I was happy with the colour so I didn't ask any further.

Hi saladi,

I am not sure about the non-flagship devices, but in general if you can launch the Samsung Apps store, and install Gear Manager from it, you should be able to test if you can pair or not while in the shop.

FYI all,

It's completely ridiculous that the Tab S CANNOT pair with the Gear S unless you modify build.prop to fake it into a phone, like S4 or S5.

Slowly swipe down from your notification screen. There is a "Clear All" button you can tap.

Guys, cant pair my gear s to a tab S.
What software should be updated?

tab s Bluetooth detects the gear but then this notification came up.

while Samsung gear apps couldn't even detect that gear at all.

Thanks!

It's all bollocks. The same problem is on XDA as well.

I believe some higher up in marketing made the decision to rape segment users such that phone users are not the same as tablet users even though the tablet is evidently a phone.

That is why I have a strong distaste for marketeers despite knowing exactly why they do it.

Since the Alpha is a phone, it should work with the Gear S.

You only keep 1 item to notify you.

For example, if you want Whatsapp, you should only choose either Whatsapp or NFGS (Notifications for Gear S) to send the notification.

If you enabled everything, you will get 1 from Whatsapp and 1 from NFGS. And even maybe 1 from Pushbullet.

Know which apps are transmitting.

Hi all, Navigator standalone is now released. You can use the GPS WITHOUT the Gear S being tethered to your phone.

Hi all, Navigator standalone is now released. You can use the GPS WITHOUT the Gear S being tethered to your phone.

Yes it occurs if you are a sweaty person tongue.gif

It has happened to mine.

As such, if at all I get another smartwatch, I'll take magnetic wireless charging.

I grudgingly admit fapple got this correct, but also Moto360 got it right the first time.

Yeah I second that, wireless charging will be the future of smartwatches.

Hate it when I have to plug the charging port all the time...sometimes it wont charge.

Now I'm frustrated over the corroded charging port...which may die anytime soon.

And who the heck dont sweat.Phobia now whether to wear it or not.Clearly a samsung design flaw

So no smartwatch for me until there's wireless charging feature.

If you check out the current crop of smartwatches from all manufacturers, only Moto360 and that rotten fruit have wireless charging.

All the rest are using copper contacts.

That's the other platform. See my sig.

Even when it is stainless, when you have current flowing you will have "electromigration" happening IINM.

Apart from the activation which you could activate without samsung phone, how about app update? Do you need Gear Manager to update app? I would like to use it fully standalone with a dedicated sim.

Thank you~

Well, after activation, you can use it completely standalone. Yes you do need a Samsung phone for the Gear Manager app to perform updates or other app installs.

Note however, the limitation of devices like the Gear S is its screen size. God forbid you want to draft an email reply on a 2" screen although you can do it if you really want to.

But, dude....the premise of navigation on the watch is for walking, running, or hiking, NOT for driving navigation.

It is FAR MORE DANGEROUS to keep glancing at your wrist on the 2" screen (even though it is the LARGEST SCREEN of all smartwatches currently) to figure out where you need to turn than to use a 5+" screen mounted on your car dash.

Although I am generally happy with the Gear S, I certainly DO NOT recommend using it, or any other similar device, to handle driving navigation.

Hi, I'm passing my Gear S to my 6 yr old daughter.

Is there anyway to make it to function like a GPS tracker? Like those that can be 'activated via sms' to send location (also via sms) to a predetermined phone number?

Yeah, multisim is the best option for forwarding.

You might need a firmware update for the Whatsapp reply, although I'm not sure how one of the other forumers got that to work.

You can still have remote control via bluetooth or wifi for phone audio, but if you were referring to the IR remote function, then yeah it sucks a little, but I think it was due to battery life concerns.

And I'm also sure that the cellular radio components took up all the space available for a camera and IR circuitry too.

Works pretty well when I'm in my office.

Out of it, I'll definitly need my BT earpiece. Privacy are one of the main reason.

With too many BT connection and sim data..... battery never last a day....

For me, for privacy reasons, I set to lowest volume and hold it up to my ear. It's easier on my old Gear 1 coz the speaker is located at the buckle. Feels more natural listening to the buckle rather than the watch itself.

I would say 20% more compared to mobile data ON. And another reason is because I set the clock to "always on"

If it's loud enough for other to heat then it seems reasonably looks enough.

I remember nokia Symbian phone that use amoled screen 'always on' the clock. Though Symbian less powerful and less resource hungry.

If can go for one long day is good enough for calling function. But it won't last long If you talk for one hour straight I suppose?

Can someone recommend any software for the Gear S that can view the camera screen on the phone and capture? Something like "Gear2cam" for the Gear 2. Can't seem to find one that can view the screen.

I just hope the full android port can fully port over to gear s... I wanna buy this for fitness use. Do you think its a wise choice? As no need bring phone to jogging or cycling etc...

I know Gear s2 is around the corner but i have a feeling that it wont be as standalone as a device and is more expensive. No speaker is sad...

My personal opinion is that Samsung threw everything into the Gear S, and after some feedback they seem to have removed GPS from the S2 LTE, and perhaps the UV sensor.

If you think you value the GPS, then get the S since the S fulfils all fitness needs by having heartrate, accelerometer, GPS, speaker etc.

I think nobody ever used the UV sensor.

You can use the Gear S as a fully standalone device, although you will need charging at least once around 2-3pm if you are actively calling on it.

I don't mind the battery life because what to expect they crammed so many things into a relative small device.

My only concern is wearing it in public as it is quite big and people might stare at it weirdly lol...

I am just finding online see who is selling their gear s second hand. Found one in this forum but still no reply yet sad.gif

I don't mind the battery life because what to expect they crammed so many things into a relative small device.

My only concern is wearing it in public as it is quite big and people might stare at it weirdly lol...

I am just finding online see who is selling their gear s second hand. Found one in this forum but still no reply yet sad.gif

There is nothing to worry except people who don't know better asking you "is that the fapple device?"

I take delight in telling them that the ithing is late to the game and lacks features that the Gear S has. Since Oct 2014.

A good video of Android 5.1.1 running on the Gear S.

The SIM card seems to be working

No I haven't, since I don't find a great utility to it, at least for now.

I love large screens, and despite this being the largest-screened smartwatch (except the Neptunes), I do not see real usability from something this small.

I find all smartwatches (including the Gear S) as a glorified notification center, at least for now.
At the very least the Gear S and S2 LTE have the added functionality of making calls via a SIM card, which occasionally comes in handy.

Yes on the bright side for me, Samsung replaced a new unit of Gear S when I sent it in for corrosion of the charging contacts.

I'll be extra careful now and put a sticker over the contacts daily....

joytest Could you make the official Gear S2 thread? I couldn't find and seems no one interest to make one.

Thanks but I don't have much available time nowadays, and I don't have an S2 either.

I prefer to run threads where I own the device.

Most of the posts I see for the S2 elsewhere are about watchfaces and some games.

Well, that's too bad. If have it's own thread then it's easier people to share where their accs bought from.
I saw Gear S2 also have band like apple-watch-hermes.

My charging cradle got damaged and can't clip on to my Gear S, thus rendering it useless as I can't charge it.

Anyone know of any alternative places to purchase the cradle besides the Samsung authorised stores (where I'm sure it will be priced at a premium)?

You can clip it and slot it onto some skinny tube item to simulate it being worn on your arm. It works for a lot of people, and also for me.

Otherwise you can buy the compatible ones from Aliexpress that do not have a battery inside.

I think my Gear S battery has died. Wondering if it will be worth replacing the battery. This will bork the water resistance.

I used to switch in between watches...... but are very much attached to my S1 since one year ago.... mainly on notifications and personally I like the bulky design

I finally flashed CM12.1 onto my Gear S.

Pretty straightforward, just like flashing any Samsung device.

Primary reason for me doing so is that I got a Xiaomi device which doesn't pair to the Gear S.

Good thing is, all the stuff works but I haven't tested the step count sensor. Most importantly, it does bluetooth pairing to the Xiaomi for Internet tethering.

I use M2D Notifications Receiver and Sender to sync notifications now, very seamless.

The worst downside is battery life has gone down the toilet.

About 3:30 and the battery is down to 50% with Wifi and Mobile networks off. I've only enabled bluetooth tethering.

I shudder to think how it would be like if Mobile network was on.

Update on battery life.

Installed No-Frills CPU Control and underclocked it to 384MHz.

9h30m and I still have 20%, with approx 2hr SOT.

Most likely the SOT is due to DayDream.
