Seems that the stuff that some call data science is pretty big overseas. Many call them data scientists.
What about us? Do we have any?

I was interested in this topic. But then again, I'm not sure if I have the passion to analyze data.

QUOTE(AkasakaRyuunosuke @ Nov 6 2014, 04:39 AM) Big data? found this http://mysigbigdata.fsktm.um.edu.my/join-us.php Is that course offered in UM? I'm quite interested in this area, I came from IT background but have left it and have been in non-IT/biz jobs for a lot of years. However I still use a lot of programming in my work, I've been interested in data for quite sometime, since the standard reports from systems/erp are quite crap. So i like to play in databases to get the answers to my/management questions.I joined MS program and IBM program about big data.. forgot to ask them about data community group if exist. I'm looking for postgrad opportunities, need to brush up on my IT skills since it's been so long. I used edx.org and did Harvard's CS50. It was cool for begginners, but I think you can find specialist courses there too. I've found reddit.com/r/dataisbeautiful to be most informative and interesting! Edit: PS from reading from Kindle publications and reddit, seems that most use these programs: R, Phyton,.. the rest are still too complicated for me. Honestly speaking, this will be a big skill in the future. Given that business models nowadays include collecting data and making profits out of it.
i.e. Facebook. Do we really know that we are the PRODUCT of this social media site. Data is the most powerful investment/asset nowadays. In my opinion, database admins should start learning this field. |

In order to perform data science, don't you need data? It's kind of a Maslow's hierarchy of needs thing, which organizations in Malaysia are probably marginally less prepared to cope with because stuff like transaction volume is much lower compared to developed countries, partially because market size is smaller and services sector is relatively less developed.
Also, it seems like some groups are trying to recruit but the positions appear under-compensated... |

QUOTE(muyyaqdhom @ Dec 31 2017, 08:31 PM) I got the chance to analyze data recently. I was required to simulate 100k transactions, so I had to analyze the data they gave me so that my simulation script would not fail halfway. Or if possible, do a workaround. I only use plain python though. I mainly use the groupby function in itertools module |
