Today Japan huge drop...

Unker, can explain what's the reason and implications of Swiss removing Franc cap ar? I actually quite rclxub.gif

My take:
- Previous cap was to stop Franc from strengthening against Euro
- Keep Franc artificially low against Euro, keep Swiss exports competitive
- In order to achieve that, Swiss Bank has to keep selling Franc/buying Euro (?)

And why do they remove the cap now? unsure.gif

i think instead of keep selling Franc....Swiss bank keep buying up Euro....which has become quite a liability for them
and i think they know that Euro QE is coming soon, so Euro will drop further
thats why removal of cap....just my guess tongue.gif
*
Ok, got it, read from Bloomberg

Expectation of further Euro QE -> more Euro flushing down financial systems -> EVEN weaker Euro -> Swiss Bank cannot "absorb" all that Euro to maintain that cap

Implications - ppl who have loans denominated in Swiss Franc - koyak sweat.gif

Actually isn't selling francs and buying euros the same thing? You sell the francs in exchange for euros. What I don't understand is who the heck is buying all those francs?!
*
u go to bank/money changer, can they say "I don't want your Swiss francs!" ? tongue.gif

It's all market force

In any market, u wanna sell (desperately), what u do? If no buyer, u cut down your selling price lor

Hence, depressed valuation for Swiss francs, (artificially) pumped-up Euro valuation

Depressed valuation? No, in Switzerland's case, their whole problem is that too many people want to buy Swiss Francs! I get that this is because it's perceived as a safe haven, but the interest rate is now negative 0.75!

Edit: sorry, this was in reply to the spider, obviously.
*
When Swiss Bank kept printing Swiss francs + kept negative interest rate = artificially depress Swiss franc valuation

Wilmar profits is mostly tied to

1. CPO - RM based selling price
2. Soybean - USD high - die faster
3. Plantation & refinery - RM & Rp

.. nothing much to do with SGD other than being listed there..  rolleyes.gif
