San Francisco (CA) - Steve Jobs' "Showtime" event today revealed a range of new Apple products. And even the real surprise, a tradition for the company at such events, was not announced, the executive presented a solid lineup of services an devices. A new 80 GB video Ipod, new Ipod Nanos with up to 8 GB capacity, a new Ipod Shuffle, a TV connector and movies for Itunes.

First up and widely expected, a new version of Itunes has been released. Itunes 7.0 focuses on changing the playing interface. There are now multiple different ways to view music collections stored on Itunes, including the "Cover Flow" view that gives users the impression of flipping through a virtual CD rack. This also speaks to another new feature included in the service, which will automatically search and find CD cover art for any album in the library.

Apple is also updating its video store library by adding an NFL channel, which will allow customers to purchase one football game to view for $1.99, or a season pass for $24.99.

More interesting on a widespread scale is that movies will finally be added to the Itunes video store. New movies, which will appear on iTunes the same day the DVD is released, will be available for $14.99 in the first week. They can also be pre-ordered for $12.99. All other movies will sell for $9.99, which will be the price for any new movie after the first week. The resolution will be limited to a 640 x 480 resolution. Over 70 movies are already set for the Itunes movie store.

Many expected a new iPod Nano to be introduced at the event, and Jobs delivered by announcing the second generation of Nanos, which are commercially available as of today. Thinner than the already sleek models, the new Ipod Nano line will be made out of aluminum and will be available in five colors: sliver, black, blue, green, and pink.

user posted image

Colors are dependant on the capacity of the player. Silver Nanos hold 2 GB and will sell for $150. The silver, pink, green, and blue players, retail for $200, hold 4 GB. Black color will be reserved for the 8 GB and ring up at $250.

The second generation iPod Shuffle was also revealed. Equipped with a belt clip and a dock plug to link to a Mac or PC, the new Shuffle is quoted by Jobs as being the world's smallest MP3 player. It has a capacity of 1 GB and will sell for $80 when it hits stores this October.

Another announcement that will please consumers is that the 30 GB video Ipod model has dropped in price from $300 to $250. A new 80 GB model will sell for $350.

Steve Jobs also made a surprise announcement by debuting a device that will connect to a TV, and can then receive wireless communication from a computer, allowing video playback from Itunes directly to the user's television set. It will be available in the first quarter of 2007.

Any of you going to get it, or are we all going to stick with our China design Ipod Namo or someother that looks like the Nano but costs 1/10th the price?

The new iPod Video come with GAPLESS playback which I liked, more brighter screen probably to counter Creative Zen Vision M. flex.gif

user posted image
-60% brighter screens
-Gapless playback
-New games available (Bejeweled, Cubis 2, Mahjong, Mini golf, pac man, tetris, texas holdem, vortex, and zuma). Games will cost $4.99 from iTunes

kudos for this long awaiting improvement, althought still no users EQ doh.gif

These updates are good news. Not just for iPod fans, but for DAP fans in general. Now companies are going to have to step it up and put out even better players and at better prices. The best part is, all players might be gapless from now on. Still missing is a Custom EQ and features such as FM radio/recorder, and Voice recorder as many other players have built in. -dapreview.net

love the new fetures on iPod video, especially the battery life and the gapless playback... love the new shuffle. it look very practical. however am terribly disappointed with the new nano design. it's not sleek anymore. *sigh*

looks like i'll have to get my myself a 30GB iPod instead... any possibilities of a bulk purchase that could drag the price down to RM1000? heheheh.. i know, it sounds ridiculous... but no harm asking, eh? laugh.gif

The features for the Ipod are good but was hoping for bluetooth and a widescreen version. Its definately an upgrade but doesnt warrant me a 60gb Video Ipod owner to upgrade. Hopefully the features I mentioned above will be incorporated into the new year

The nano looks like a retro mini although it does help that it won't scratch like the current nano.

The only one that has the radical look is the shffule and it does look good and the clip makes it very practical.

Gapless playback refers to the gaps during audio playback when a song switches to the next one, not the 'black gaps' in the video.

yeah.. i never liked the iPod mini look.
metal backs are so stylish.. easily scratched, but stylish nonetheless.
the 80GB iPod is a great upgrade, since movies would definitely require more space. The users who are planning to buy an iPod get a bonus, but like zaakath said, it doesnt warrant us iPod owners to upgrade just yet.

perhaps 6G would have more things to offer.
as for now, let me just enjoy Prison Break and House on my 30GB...

hydorgen,
am planning to get a 30GB iPod and stuffing it with 'house' or 'CSI' definitely appeals to me. the only thing is, where do i get these videos? and then there's battery life issue. how many episodes of house could you enjoy before the battery dies on you? lastly, the screen, isn't it too small?

if it's inappropriate to discuss in this thread, please PM me. arigato nee... smile.gif

screen is ok, nice, crisp and clear. the current ipod video's screen is bright enough for me, and now 60% increase in brightness....wow, even better. new ipod video gives 20 hours of audio playback and 6.5 hrs of video playback.

brighter screen usually means much less battery life. apple however managed to improve on both, which is simply superb!

Question: are the improved features ONLY for the 80GB iPod or for BOTH?

The new iPod Shuffle... FUGLY. They should have just made the previous 'Thumbdrive' design smaller. Nothing beats the old Shuffle with it's truly 'PLUG and PLAY' features. Now, we have to dock it? geezz... pathetic.

The new iPod Nanos... ewww... what's this? back to the future? It's like the iPod Mini after a Marie France slimming programme.

USD4.99 for a really old game like Pac Man... Steve, dude... are you getting senile? I wonder how you guys are gonna cope, playing Bejewelled on that tiny little screen without touchscreen. USD14.99 for a movie?? laugh.gif

Honestly, I expected something much better... much much better.

Huh!! the Ipod Nano looks similar to Mini, i would very much prefer the older version of Nano. Quite dissapointed that there isn't a larger screen for Ipod Video.Maybe i got too carried away by the rumours of the next generation of ipod.

1. firstly, you hav to get the videos by yourself. most people get theirs from t*****ts. u can also purchase them legally off iTunes. As for House and CSI, i guess the best thing u can do is RiP them off DVDs. Season 1 and 2 is now available at your local DVD seller. (*ahem*)
2. use a DVD Ripper and rip it into your computer. (AVI, MPEG, WMV?)
3. Convert the Video to mp4 format. (Use a iPod Video Converter such as Videora, WinAVI, etc.)
4. drag and drop it into your iTunes + iPod just like your songs.

I usually manage to watch at least two episodes of any show before the batt dies on me. it's quite enough cos staring at the 2.5inch screen for more than that and your head will start to ache.

The screen is too small, but the iPod's other advantages don't make me regret buying an iPod.
however, u might want to purchase the 80GB version if you can afford too, though. It makes a lot of difference when you're storing videos, movies, thousands of songs, and using it as an external hard disk. (like me)

welcome to the iPod family, and lastly,
it's hydrogen. not hydorgen.

iPod can only accept and play songs from iTunes (unless you're using Rockbox), but it can also act as an external harddisk! im surprised u didnt know that..
go to My Computer and it detects your iPod as a storage device.
take note: you have to enable to use it as an external storage device. this is done in iTunes > edit > Preferences > iPod > Music.
Check the box which says "enable disk use", and pronto

an 80GB hard disk. WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
(and yes, ANY FILE ANY FORMAT AND F***IN PROGRAMS if you want to.)

student discount is valid for only ONE ipod per year.

edit: my bad. it appears student discounts are no longer available to the new line of ipods.

pretty lame huh...they put up a bunch of regulations, made us go through the trouble of selecting the University, looking up for it...showing a university store...and when u add the stuff to cart...it shows regular price rolleyes.gif the other "bundled" offers arent particularly interesting as well.

well i thought maybe only the Canadian Apple store stopped giving student discount (it was 10% IIRC), so i tried a faux purchase from apple.com with random university....same thing..no discount. but for mac book pro, u can still get the free ipod nano deal smile.gif

i'm interested as well. but i'm rather concerned about kastam. can i buy an ipod (or two) there and simply bring it into malaysia without being taxed for it? Nanti dah beli for RM1000, tiba2 kena tax 30% pulak.. haiyoo...

can someone clear this matter up for me?

on a different note, i called macAsia Sdn Bhd (http://www.macasia.com.my/locate/index.html) and made an inquiry regarding the battery life and screen brightness improvement. they confirmed that the improvement is for BOTH models. so i guess the new ipod 30GB will have better screen brightness and battery life than the old ipod 30GB rclxms.gif . oh... the new stuff will be up for grabs in malaysia within 1 month. (hopefully) They're still unsure about the pricetag though... hmmm.. blink.gif

correct me if i'm wrong, anyone..

What about the iPod Video 30GB and 80GB? People were predicting the 80GB harddrive for a while. I think Seagate's supplying Apple with the 80GB HDDs. Perhaps dropping the price on the 30GB is simply a trick to get even more market penetration.

iPod Flea is just rumors and it might not be true. If so, why you wanna listen to only a song in it cos it only allows one song per time. And it does not have accurate capacity size, one song from diff artist can be bif files like 15MB or what, so it shud show that it has for example 30MB built in memory... anyway it sucks..like a pil.

This is extremely unlikely. The probability (and we won't know until someone puts up autopsy pics of the 5G ipod) is that the better battery-life is due to both hardware and software optimization rather than simply a improved battery. Batteries in the various generations of iPods have rarely been interchangeable too.

*
For the Shuffle, they have to choose between size/wearability or keeping the USB. I think they made the right choice, it's now smaller and can be weared. For the USB, i don't really miss it. USB flash drives are dirt cheap now, no point going back to the past. And it's not like u can sync the Shuffle at a lot of places. The new Shuffle charges and transfer through the audio connector alone, imagine that. The audio is a USB and power input itself.

Now, the Nano is scratchless, so can't complain. It's not thicker but thinner a bit, maybe 3mm? How much thinner can u get before u break the thing? laugh.gif Come with colours, cheaper.

Those games are designed to be played using the scrollpad. At least it's better than all of the other mp3 players out there that include like 2 games and played using buttons. iPod is not perfect but it's hell a lot better than all mp3 players out there by a large margin.

U can buy those cheap MP4 players that frustrates and annoys u. Drag and drops videos to find that u can't play them(some even need u to rename the files), having to go through gigabytes of songs to drag and drop only a few that u wanted. Have a dozen buttons or so. Pressing the next buttons 100 times before u found the song u want among thousands of songs. iPod is unbeatable now, so don't complain if it doesn't communicate telepathically with ur brain. laugh.gif

The Zune is just about as thick as the iPod Video 60/80GB and its screen resolution isn't all that great, either. Microsoft still hasn't released the word on the Zune's battery life. From what I've read, it seems that Microsoft will be allowing music sharing between Zune owners across WiFi. You can stream music from a Zune or transfer full tracks to another Zune user. They'll get three plays over three days before they have to purchase the music in order to play it again. It's a clever idea, I think. We'll see how the Zune stacks up against whatever Apple springs out next. This iPod Video 5.5 is a half-baked product if you ask me smile.gif

It would require greater processing power, thus reducing battery life. Everyone wants longer playback times and that Apple has managed to squeeze out better video playback times with a 60% brighter screen is quite amazing in itself. I'm just wondering when we'll see a widescreen iPod Video with the virtual touch wheel.

Well , as I said in the other post of mine .
iPod Nano's 8GB price is RM1149 . It is out already in most shops .
7th Gen ? This new batch of ipods are only what they call it the "5.5" Gen .
I guess 6th Gen will be out next year smile.gif

hey don't forget, the ipod experience is just great. The felling of owning one and using it clearly distinguishes it among other mp3 players. it is so easy to use, navigation is by far the best i have ever came across. have you used a sony or creative? it never comes close to the ipod. even tough they may have better specs, but it can never beat the ipod. icon_rolleyes.gif

the truth is that almost every gadget is cheaper in Singapore, even after currency conversion. This includes the latest gadgets such as all iPods, and even handphones and PDAs.
You can get the best prices on your iPods at Sim Lim Square lor. (Singapore's version of PLaza Low Yat)

Tips: Bring along any of your Singaporean friend along when you visit this mall the next time you're there, cause they won't entertain Malaysian( I mean they won't bargain the price that you want) so bring your Singaporean friend together for the talking process...

cause their language style is different... a Singaporean can easily spot a foreigner by their language and how you talk... the slang and stuff... smile.gif

1st gen Nano :-
-14 hours battery life
-colour comes with black or white only

2nd gen Nano :-
-24 hours battery life
-quick search function
-brighter screen
-Aluminium body
-funky colours

But the main advantage of the 2nd gen to me is the battery life. If you don't mind having only 14 hours of battery life, just go with it.

I heard the 2nd Gen Nanos have some un even tone of colour, so if u get the green one, you'll see some area or spots with a darker green...

Ur previous Ipod charger wont work with the new Nanos, coz the connector is slimmer.

I believe that all the and gen Nano comes in anodized body.
By the way, is it really in stores now(Mac Asia) ?
Will we be able to test it first ?
The reason I wanted to test it is because, there are a few complains saying that the new 2nd gen Nanos having some kind of high pitched sound while it's turn on. This could be rather annoying in a quite enviroment.

Oh come on, not everyone knows about metal treatments. Google.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anodized#Anodized_aluminium

Build up a potential difference, cause aluminum to oxidize, forming a protective layer of aluminum oxide that keeps your gadgets safer from scratches.

for those who didnt know....there are many ways you can "color" aluminium. You can simply paint them, powder coat them, alodine them, or anodize them. Anodizing is the preferred method, especially if the anodized layer is really thick, as they are very scratch resistance. You can DIY anodizing at home with a car battery charger, some battery acid (sulfuric acid) and some fabric dye. If you have an old ipod mini, you can actually take off the casing, strip off the anodized layer, and reanodize + dye them to other colors you want smile.gif

I do not like the new Nano. It feels "out of proportion" if you get what I mean.
Besides, why Anodising?
It looks very "before" after the iPods all upgraded to plastic with gloss coating.

Apple should've used Durabis for coating iPods hehe. tongue.gif
