Safest but too diversified ETF.
Suitable if you expect around 5%~6% p.a. only.
Not bad alternative to EPF, ASB etc.

US ETF Questions

Hi all Sifus - noob here, would like to start invest in US ETF, upon some quick research, i have found the below but i have some questions that i cant really find a quick answer from the web.

S&P 500: VOO vs SPY, which one is better and what's the difference? i guess is just managed by 2 different company? just our choice based on management fee?

NASDAQ 100: QQQ, what's the difference compare to S&P 500 above? my guess is NASDAQ 100 is just less company, 100 vs the 500 above?

Based on the above, which one do you guys recommend?

thanks so much!

I like it but it's US-domiciled so there's higher dividend witholding tax rate and estate tax liability. I would recommend the Vanguard FTSE All-World UCITS ETF instead.

Thanks for your recommendation. So many etf available making me headache doh.gif

VOO is managed by Vanguard. SPY is managed by SPDR.
People recommend Vanguard because fee is lower.
Both attempt to track S&P 500 index.

NASDAQ and S&P use different criteria to rank their top companies.
NASDAQ 100 has 100 companies while S&P 500 has 500.
Hence, NASDAQ 100 is less diversified.

NASDAQ 100 does not have any financial stocks while S&P 500 does.
You won't find any banking stocks in NASDAQ 100.
NASDAQ 100 is also tech focused.
If tech goes bust like Dot-com Bubble, might take years to recover.

QQQ is managed by Invesco.
It attempts to track NASDAQ 100.

None. Pick the most bang for buck etf. You want your money to be working hard for you.

For that I only recommend Ark funds.

But why? Expense ratio is high and doesn't have a track record (less than 5 years).
Ark funds performed well this year but doesn't mean it will perform well in future.

If Cathie is so good at picking stocks, why now only her funds became popular?

Not to shit on ARK but genuinely like to know from people who keep recommending Ark.

Bro they already got 5 years record just that this year people heard of her.
https://ark-funds.com/arkk#performance
That's just one fund. You can go look at her other funds.

Why because she's doing what other other funds are not doing. Leaving those funds in the dust and have been beating the S&P500 year in year out. All her picks are well unorthodox, disruptive to current companies, and not index hugging. And because she's that good, lots of people trying to copy her.

I like to give an example
0.03% expense ratio for 8%p.a return vs 0.75% for 30-40%p.a return. You can see which is the better value for money.

Yeah some forummers here did USD TransferWise as well - though it took 5+ days for fund verification (and some encountered rejects too rclxub.gif)

But good to see that he (the blogger) was only charged flat $1.1USD for outbound USD transfer via Transferwise Bank Wire. I experimented with SGD and had the same finding - seems to be fixed "outbound" transfer fee from TW Borderless. Could be useful for future pathways leveraging TW Borderless.

I just don't understand why when I attempted this (via TW EUR my-name-borderless-account) and funded my T212, it accepts the fund but doesn't recognize the bank account as a withdrawal source rclxub.gif

------
Still, no right or wrong but frankly I prefer the more inefficient method via HKD/SGD route (via HK/SG local banks) at this stage.
Typically I lose only between $1 ~ $2 depending on sum I transfer and I get the $ tradeable within the day (or less than 4 hours if I timed the transfers within working hours correctly)

Actually 5 years is not long to judge especially since we haven't seen the funds' performance in an actual bear market.

It's up to risk appetite I guess. Sticking to S&P 500 is not just for stable returns but for diversification.

Actually 5 years is pretty long already for funds.
Well it did. And see how it rebounded post March.

You don't need to worry about how much it drop in a bear market. In a bear market the more it drop the better. More discounts to buy. I love a good discount.

It's not for the faint hearted cause it can swing 10-20% one time.

thanks... hope your xfer goes through...

his $20 might not trigger any ibkr audit/rejection though... best is ibkr accepts new fintechs as approved companies, and let fintechs handle aml check...

Yeah me too. Anyway no problem is transaction does not go through. It will just get refunded back into my TW borderless account including with the fees.

Let's see if my USD100 transfer can go through. I am in no hurry. As of writing this post money have arrived into IBKR bank account but not released yet to me acording to IB site. Will check tonight and see.

polarbearz any idea about using margin via IB? Once I hit USD200k I think no harm with margin of USD20k. Any idea how to apply to cap margin at only USD20k?

Why so sure on ARK above other etf? Saw many utubers made video on it as one of the best performing ETF

any thoughts on ONLN as a proxy for AMZN?

The single unit of AMZN at 3000USD is kinda pricey and makes me sweat three buckets before pulling the trigger. Take into account my portfolio is only around 5k USD at the moment. I still want to buy ARKK, CXSE, AAPL as part of my DCA portfolio...
