thanks for the compliment. all pics (excepts pic 6) were shot with canon 100d + tamron 90mm. pics 6 was shot with a cheap closed up filter, and unexpectedly, remains as my fav of all time compared to those shot with actual macro lens xD

Great macro attempts mate! thumbup.gif

Can try adding some Extension Tubes that will help you get higher magnifications thumbup.gif This setup will work better with a flash system, can consider too so that you can take your shots at lower ISO icon_rolleyes.gif

no prob! i guess equipment is not the most important factor. You must have put more effort and attention to framing and exposure when shot no.6. hope to see more work from you!

i wanna buy flash, but dont want to spend $$ on a ring flash.. could 430ii ex canon flash work fine ? i am thinking of getting this instead of ring flash partly because i could use the 430 for other purpose beside macro..

Yea, the Canon flashgun is more than enough for serious macro work thumbup.gif
The most important thing is the flash diffusion, once you get it right, your photos will easily become very good ~

I've spent quite a lot of time and money on different flashes (dual flash etc.) and diffusers, in the end I still love using normal flashguns since they can use rechargeable AA batteries which are relatively easier and cheaper to buy in the market thumbup.gif

My current macro rig uses an external flashgun:

You don't really need to get a ring flash to get the same effect, just make a ring-diffuser icon_rolleyes.gif

As for the diffuser, try to get those made of PE foam, those are some of the best diffusing materials out there~
All the best mate!

hehe u r right.. need to wait for the parents to go away first before snapping it quickly.. thanks for the commendation !

p/s: why when i tried to crop in even tighter, the picture become pixelated and blur, is it because of my low megapixel dslr or due to hand shake ?

The pixelation and blurriness is due to too much cropping (not enough megapixels for display), and when this happens, technical flaws within a photo i.e. not sharp, handshake blur becomes very obvious. So most of the time it will be a good idea to find a balance between how close you shoot and how much you crop, so that you get a good balance between Depth-of-Field and also the resulting image quality.

I usually don't go below 6MP for all my macro photos, so at least I can still develop them when required laugh.gif

Glad to be able to help icon_rolleyes.gif

Oh, no choice lo bro, I had to test out the gears the hard way laugh.gif
If I get to re-choose everything, I would definitely pick a smaller crop-sensor DSLR- that will help cut off the weight. The performance of a DSLR doesn't really matter that much when it comes to Macro, but the weight and magnification affect everything laugh.gif

As for the diffuser, its sort of neccessary to make it that large. In fact, the larger the surface area for light diffusion, the better the light diffusion oh (same reason why studio use umbrellas for their flashes and don't just use the flashguns directly) haha, which is why many of us have ridiculously large diffusers laugh.gif Try it out and see for yourself brows.gif
