It is UNLIKELY that any company will advertise to hire some "Game Designer" or "Game Programmer". This is similar that a company wont go and advertise to hire "CEO".

Okay, you intersted in games related job, then have to ask yourself, what part of game industry you interested?
1 - Game Design
2 - Game Programming
3 - Graphic Design(Artist)
4 - Graphic Design(3D)
5 - Game Master
6 - Sell games
7 - Just like to play games

For option 1 and 2, you will need to learn A LOT. Go google graphic programming and learn all the CODINGS and METHODS about game programming, which code to use, direct X or OpenGL? Allegro or SDL? And master the library function, programming, anything you need and you think you need.

And then dont expect someone will hire you as GD or GP(refer above). We dont have a lot of big game companies in Malaysia, even we do have small game companies, they already have their own human resource. You have to design your own game, do your own programming, etc. That means you must be a game making enthusiast, and finally you made a product - ie a working game, and present it to a game publisher hoping to get their attension.

Also dont expect just to present your game idea to a publisher and they will consider invest in your idea. You have to fork your own resource to make your first game.

Qualification: Game Design Enthusiast
Degree Qualification: Not necessary, I got a game design book, author with a degree in physic.
Ability: Must be extremely self motivated to complete your project

...

Okay, now you say you interested to the graphic part of a game, now this is an experty which required qualifications. You need to persue your study into multimedia stuff, and have a sense of art. And you have to know what you are doing and going to do.

You are still able to find some vacancy with relevent job in StarJob, but the changes are you are doing graphic, but you are not always related to game.

A few weeks ago I saw an ads on StarJob looking for Mathematician to be a 3D designer. Oh remember, 3D graphic design, is a very mathematical thing.

...

5, Game Master is the guy monitoring gaming process, to provide in game customer support and also catch those pesty cheaters. They also incharge of organizing in game event. Lets see him/her as the administrator of game.

Go google pages from malaysia and you should be able to find some related vacancy.

...

For no. 6, I will just referring to those selling original games. Join as a shop keeper, you are no different then working as a cashier in Tesco or IKAE. Just that the goods are different. So when you think about opening a shop selling games, you will need capital, some more not many people buying original software here... you got 1st class shop, but all the 3rd class customers, also hardly survive.

...

For the last option, you like to play games very much. If you have the talent in it and you are able to frequently win in most championship you might stand a change to be a professional gamer, represent malaysia and join international game competition. And eventually become famous enough and those hardware makers and game makers might want to put your nickname on their products.

But if you just addicted to play games, your CS sniper skill sucks, you frequently got tower rushed in WC3, you always leave in mid game DOTA, play NFS like bumber car.... better focus more on your school work, dont play too much games. Serious.

Big team got big work, small team got small work, one man got one man work. Yeah, agree that those big shot like Final Fantasy, Warcraft series...etc all involved over 100 personel of experts game designer, graphic artists, 3d artists, programmers, movie maker, sound engineer... this is truely some impressive human resource and management job.

One man team can do game design also, got some famous example too, like Utopia biggrin.gif simple interactive game.

edit: also try search "game" in jobstreet, you will get plenty of vacancies.

love the 2nd link laugh.gif thumbup.gif

but then again, the most important thing to ask here is, what do you major in? coz i dont think there are any institutions in Malaysia offering Diploma or Degree in Game Programming or Game Design.

Yes, we do have Graphic design but its not really tailored towards the game development scene.

Like to play games NOT EQUAL TO fit for a career in the electronic entertainment industry.

If you really are passionate then go ahead, else do something else. Loads of my uni-mates thought they were passionate about games but once the difficult stuff comes in (programming, logic etc) they started b*tching about how difficult and different it was from their expectation.

Go read up on ppl like John Carmack, John Romero, Sid Meier, Shigeru Miyamoto etc.

What kind of game programming course are you in? Be sure you are motivated enough to do lots of self study, dun wait till lecturer teach only you learn.

I recalled that MMU has a Degree in Multimedia majoring in Software Engineer and Gaming. But I heard that due to this course is too new the lecturer dunno how to teach the subject well. But that was a few years back.

Impressed by the Japanese work of great art and great game play? biggrin.gif

If you dream to work in japan, first thing is to learn japanese(of course), dont expect to speak english to them. Second, make sure you are good enough.

But seem like you are more motivated to work for a game company rather then making game.

Also, Chris Taylor smile.gif

Very true, passionate to play game and passionate to make game is different thing. Their difference is like a F1 driver and a car engineer.

I once trying to peek into 3D programming, the first 2 chapters was fun, but got freaked out by a barrier of 4 chapters of pure maths on matrix, ahhh, and the formulae... biggrin.gif

Anyhow, my believe is that a true game is not a piece of technology showcase, it could be bitmaps art or even text mode and still deadly addictive and fun and yet with a super low requirement plus excellence performance. Working toward this way now.

I would think of the F1 driver as the designer (Romero, Meier, Miyamoto) who feels the product + set the direction vs the developer (Carmack) who develops the product. In btw you have the artists, sound engineers, marketing ppl etc.
