I heard about Avalon as well, not sure how good they are though. I got my wedding photos done couple of weeks back through a photographer i hired on www.kaodim.com. Very happy with the outcome and the photos taken.

They've got many good photographers there and you just need to submit a request. In a very short time I got like 4 or 5 introductions to photographers who could do the job for me and I could compare their prices. Best part is there are also profiles of their past work so it was really easy to see decide who to hire. And no charges to users, so very useful platform.
