Trading safely on Lowyat.NET
  • Beware of new signups. You are advised to be cautious with a seller who has just joined Lowyat.NET.
  • Beware of suspicious pricing/behavior. You are advised to be cautious if the seller prices his goods too low, is unsure of his product specifications, seems to evade questions, refuses to state the origin of his goods. In such a situation, think twice or sleep over it.
  • Check the Blacklist. Cross-check your seller against the Official Black List 1 and Official Black List 2. Be aware that the Black List is not the be one and end all list for frauds. To be extra safe, you could check the Fraud Alert at lelong.com.my as well.
  • Check the Successful Trade List. You are advised to check the Succesful Trades List before dealing with anyone.
  • Talk to the buyer/seller. Find out other topics conducted by him, and ask if there are others who have dealt with him before. Feedback is important.
  • Prefer safe traders. We have implemented a safe trader feature where genuine buyers/sellers have a user posted image tag assigned to them. Membership to this tag is screened and provided at the discretion of LYN admins. Still, you are advised to exercise caution with safe traders as with anyone else.
  • Don't place too much deposit. Don't let the sellers hold your money whenever possible. RM50 should be enough to prove that you're a serious buyer.

Guidelines for a safe COD
  • Finalize details after a deal is confirmed. Finalize the contact details, meeting place, items, and price before meeting. Do not wait till the point that you're supposed to meet.
  • Deal at public places. Also, don't take too much money with you. Even if it is not the seller who will rob you, someone else might.
  • Call your seller. To reduce the chances of getting FFK-ed, call the seller an hour before meeting to remind him. At this point you can also confirm details and track his whereabouts (as to whether he's on his way).
  • Be punctual. This applies to both parties.
  • Check the items. Once the has seller arrived, check the items. Ensure that you are provided with everything that was promised. If it's possible, test the item on-the-spot. For mobile phones, here's a guideline:
    QUOTE

    • Check warranty sticker (date issued and make sure there's a SIRIM sticker)
    • Check LCD for dead and also bright pixels
    • Try making and receiving calls to test the speaker
    • Test keypad sensitivity(press one by one)
    • Test on/off Button(make sure it's sensitive)
    • Try to run some applications
    • Try sending and receiving files via bluetooth
    • Test camera (snap and save the pic, cover the camera's viewfinder and look at the LCD to make sure you don't see any bright pixels)
    • Make sure accessories are original
    • Check receipt of purchase (needed for claiming warranty)
    • Check the package(make sure it's like what seller told)

  • Remember your trader. In case of a dispute later on, it is advisable that you gather as much information of your trader as you can. This includes his appearance, accent, and car make & number plate.

Guidelines for bank transfer confirmation
  • Scan the bank-in slip. If the buyer is banking-in with the ATM machine, request that the receipt to be scanned.
  • Use email notification. Some online banking services (e.g. Maybank2U) allows the beneficiary email to be entered. If your buyer is using this, request that he enter your email address, so that it is easier to cross-reference his transaction later.
