Just asking,im currently study A-Levels.My course ending at June or July this year and im considering studying in Aus since it's cheaper than UK or US.Firstly,do the univercites in Aus accept A-Levels results?

I keep on hearing Adelaide is good for study. Is there any good engineering uni over there?Planning to take E&E or Civil engineering over there.

UNSW is reowned for its Engineering programs in Australia. However, it's in Sydney, so naturally it can be quite expensive.
The more affordable options are University of Adelaide or University of Queensland.

Orientation usually lasts 5 days (1 week), though you're not expected to be there everyday (you wouldn't want to).

Thanks,is that any more average to good engineering uni in Australia?Im afraid i cant get into those uni you have mention just now. They seems to be damn good to me.

There are a few great professor in the department of E & E Engineering. Though there are also some new lecturers whom I think are inexperienced. Overall standard is very high, one of the highest in Australia.
*
Alright, thanks. Can you recommend me any other goot uni for E&E engineering?I would like to have more alternative.

Besides,hows the lifestyle in Adelaide?

See, the research was conducted by the Melbourne Institute, a research institute at the University of Melbourne.

http://www.melbourneinstitute.com/publicat...e%20Summary.pdf

Regardless of this fact, I'd say not to take any rankings seriously because there's no uniform metrics applied at all and sometimes, the results are skewed or differ only by a small margin. Unless you're a postgrad, this should not be a major worry. As you can see, all the Go8 unis perform incredibly well.

Any reason why Go8s are performing so imba-ly well?

Hi all,

I am no longer a student nor are planning to go over to Australia for studies, but just to share some freindly reminders for my fellow Malaysian students planining or are already studying in Australia.

First of all, I must say that Australia is a very beautiful country with very nice weather, and I believe that it's a very good environment for studies.

However, almost every cities has a CASINO, which is reachable easily for many, and that includes students studying there.

Have been to Australia a couple of time, and have visited the casino most of the time brows.gif , and every time, I have met a lot of big gamblers, and they are partly STUDENTS  sweat.gif  sweat.gif

Putting this reminder here I have no intention of creating any prejudice, but to serve as a reminder to who are planning to go there for studies.

Discipline is atmost important when you are alone as there will be alot of temptation, putting aside cultural shock and many others, but GAMBLING really ruin a lot of students who lack self control, whom I have read and come across  sweat.gif

Therefore, forgive me if I say the wrong thing here that offence anyone, but at least some planning going over, would be more prepared.

Last but not the least, I wish all the students there a very successful sutdies.

Once again, my apologies in interupting the discussion here  notworthy.gif  notworthy.gif

Thanks for the reminder but im more afraid of getting carried away by forums and games than casinos. smile.gif

Because they're better funded.

No other reason meh?

Haha, it seems like there are some people here who would like to study engineering and were all discussing about the ranking of U in Australia, well to me i think which U rank higher doesnt really mean anything unless you are wanted. No point studying in the best U in aussie and come out with no jobs rite? Engineers in Perth are really different, as there is a high demand for it. I have many friends in Perth working as engineers, and all of them agree that this is the place where u can get highly paid as an engineer.... i am not sure about how much engineers get paid else where but the amount here is quite good.... wink.gif
*
Thats true,no point going to places like MIT and be lazy there.

Ranking is not my main concern but the quality of teaching is more important.

Because it IS true. Go8 universities get more funding because they:
a) have more students. They attract the state's top performers, etc.
b) do more credible/excellent research work than any other university. Don't fall for marketing ploys, but you can check the universities' web sites and the Australian media to see which universities' research work are usually highlighted and they are usually Go8 unis by no accident.
c) have better academic resources, international links, etc.
d) are more prestigious, much like the Ivy Leagues in the US. <- This is of no real concern.
Although rankings are insignificant, there is a difference between the graduates of the first-tier universities and their peers. For one, the work/assignments are generally tougher, hence giving their students a greater challenge. They also have more industry partners so graduates are able to stand out from the crowd. Teaching quality, however, is subjective. This is an area where students' comments are valuable. Many university lecturer's renumeration awards aren't based on their teaching performance, but their research work, hence they lack the dedication to teach.

There are also other significant fields of engineering besides civil and mining. Particularly in technology, there's always Computer, Software, Eletrical Engineering, Telecommunications, etc. which are playing an increasingly important role as we rely on the power of computing to perform our everyday tasks.

Thanks for enlightening me but i dont really get the marketing ploys.Could you give an example or 2?Does it means that Go8 unis dont do marketing ploys?

It simply means don't fall for their marketing tactics. Lower tiers often claim they are prestigious, quality education etc. Don't listen to them. Do your own research.

Ok,thanks. What criteria i should look for when im doing research for unis?

Roughly 16000 to 22000 dollars per year, dont forget the  10% increment for each year .

I think not all will increase every year.UNISA's fees are fixed one.If you first year's fees is 19k,it will stay 19k till you graduate.

Any comments on University of Adelaide? Is it good?

I currently on my 1/2 year gap year and going to Aus on Feb 2008 to do E&E engineering next year.I havent choose my uni but i have applied loads of them.Mostly Go8.

I prefer places like Adelaide or Perth since the things there are cheaper than Sydney and Melbourne.
