Whatever you do, try not to get Dodo as it sucks big time. It may be cheap, but the speed is slower than streamyx, or rather around the same speed. :S

On side note, I just got an offer from Melbourne Uni for medicine. biggrin.gif

anyone know how long it takes for uni to reply to ur application? I applied thru IDP and they sed 4-6 weeks... its a little passed 6 weeks now and i e-mailed them last nite... no reply so far... applied for monash and rmit...
*
VCE results were released last month and the universities are very busy.

What intake are you looking at, Semester 1 or semester 2?

I, along with my friends, applied for uni well before the release of our final results to avoid rushes like these. Melbourne Uni took 5 days (from the day of the release of my results, in december) to offer me a university place. However, I applied in May and they have already processed my other documentation.

But, since RMIT and Monash require paper applications, it might take longer for them to process. Also, bear in mind that the uni people just came back from their holidays. You should wait until the middle of January. If your offer doesn't come by then, you should panic and contact your agent.

Hey guys, if i am currently using pirated software, will they stop and check my notebook in the imigration??
*
No, they won't check your laptop. Just make sure you read what is allowed and not allowed(especially food)

Immigration people in Australia and Malaysia are VERY different. In Malaysia, I can't just walk through without even getting asked. In Australia, they are VERY STRICT, so beware.

i think almost every student will be screened for their criminal records, if you are involved in the health care sector (doct, nurse and etc) i think your medical check up would be more extensive, when i call the medical centre for my check up, they asked me if i'm doing medicine, so i think probably they have 2 type of medical check up depending on what you study there.
*
I'm doing medicine and the doctor said that they changed the policy and medical students do not need the blood test anymore.(since it will be done by your uni)
BTW, when you guys certify the documents(for under-18 students), do you need it to be in hand written in English saying 'I hereby certify that....."?

huh? if it's official doc. then i guess you can do it via computer and print it out, most important IMO is the witness, and also the signatures of the party involved. Depends on what kind of documents you talking abt. Anyway i don't know since i'm past 18.  biggrin.gif

Documents need to be translated into English by a lawyer if Im not mistaken. U should ask an agent to do it, it would be much much muchhh easier.

Yup, I'm going to Trinity College, but it'll be the residential college. What are you going there for? Foundation Studies, Summer School, Residential?

Really, toothpaste is not expensive there, just bring one box and it should be sufficient. Try to buy whatever books you can here(if you have enough luggage space, since most of them are cheaper here)

Also, remember an adapter!

I posted a few pages back that I applied for Monash and RMIT thru IDP, and they had yet to reply me... Well, last week I e-mailed them, and no reply... A few days later, I went to see them personally, then she told me Monash replied and said I didnt meet their requirements, and RMIT is holding a place for me but they want my portfolio... I dont have a portfolio...

But the thing is, RMIT replied on the 26th November, and IDP couldnt even be bothered to e-mail me and inform me that they want a portfolio... Atleast I could have done something from the 26th November... Last week i went to see them only she told me that RMIT said that... WTF! They just spoil my chance of getting into RMIT! So now i got no choice, I apply for Monash College, coz i dont need a portfolio then... And yes, I DID NOT apply thru IDP, I applied myself... I already got a reply from Monash saying they recieved my application and they will process it and get back to me...

For what IDP exists then? We can do it ourselves! They just make ur chances WORST... They are basically useless...
*
Australians are generally very efficient. If they want to get something done, they usually say in 5 working days.(and they mean it!) If something is not done by that time, send an e-mail to them.

Also bear in mind that Australia is not a spoon-feeding country. You must do your research(eg: finding out the prerequisite, entry scores, requirements to enter university). Their website is a good place to start.

So, to every new students going to Australia-try to get rid of the Malaysian mentality in doing things (last minute work, spoon-feeding). The lecturers are not going to care if you can cope or not. They will keep on going at a fast pace and if you don't bother to ask or do your research, you won't get good results.

im curious, why is melbourne one of the more famous australian universities??

and also, out of the group of 8 universities, which ones would you recommend to do mechanical engineering?

went to idp on friday, so many people waiting to talk there, had to leave cos no time, so hoping can get some advice from you guys in the meantime tongue.gif
*
Cos Melbourne is one of the better ones for almost all courses .... and easy to enter for Bachelor of Arts, Commerce and Science. Sometimes I do wish that they increase the entrance scores but I guess they prefer $$ more.

I went to Sydney straight after SPM on January, luckily I wasnt chosen for NS (but even if ur chosen, u can just refuse)
Im in Sydney under own fundings but if u wanna get a study loan, u need to apply for it,
some of those I know took A lvls or AUSMAT. Maybe the others can help u out on this..
If ur under scholarship, u'll get around AUD1200 per month and its up to u to spend (rent, flight tix maybe, etc.)

My expenses last year (Foundation Year)
total course fee AUD18,000 but its AUD22,000+
Accomodation AUD295 per week (all bills included) at Unilodge@UNSW
Monthly allowance AUD1600-1700 but it depends on each individual.

pretty pricey I guess  tongue.gif
Hope this helps u out a bit.

I'd like to ask a question. For english, its divided to 3 subs right??Drama, EAP and Literature..are we suppose to pick 2 out of the 3 or we must learn all 3??
*
No...English is divided into 2-Lit and Drama where lit counts for 70% while drama is worth 30% of your final English mark.

EAP is a totally different subject whatsoever. EAP is more of the grammar, academic writing, speaking etc.

Both English and EAP are compulsory. You need to pass the EAP hurdle to enter Uni but EAP cannot be counted as one of your best 4 subjects. On the other hand, your English mark can be counted as best 4 and in certain courses(Engineering, Med, Dentistry...etc), must be included in your best 4 mark.

I'll give you the mark breakdown.

English
Term 1->2 literature essays about 400 words each based on 2 poems(1 from lectures and 1 from tutorials)-5%
Term 2->1 lit essay about 1500 words based on a novel or short story [20%] and drama monologue [10%]
Term 3->1 lit essay about 1500 words, comparing a novel and a short story [20%] and drama group project [10%]
Term 4->1 lit essay about 1500 words based on a play(eg:Shakespeare) [15%] and drama group performance [10%]

Total=90%+(10% participation)= 100%

EAP
Term 1->nothing
Term 2->Homework essay-400 words[5%] + Exam Essay-800words[25%]
Term 3->Homework essay-600 words[5%] + In-class exam essay-700 words[10%]
Term 4->Oral presentation, 10 mins[25%] + Exam Essay-700words[30%]

N.B: All EAP essays must be academic writing (references..etc...)

Total=100%

Hope this post clears your confusion! Hope you have a good time in Trinity(I sure did wink.gif )

WoW  shocking.gif  shocking.gif  shocking.gif  shocking.gif  shocking.gif OMFG...the number of words is killing me. I don't know whether i can write that many words..Exams also i write about only 600+ words sweat.gif  sweat.gif Were you able to write that many words???

and are we suppose to write it down or can we type it down?
*
You can only type down the EAP homework stuff but all the other exam essays must be handwritten in the examination booklet.

The recommended length of 1500 words is usually too short for a good literature essay and most students will go up to 2500-3000. The length of the literature exam is usually 3 hours.

Trinity really helps you for uni even though the course may be quite intense and tough at times. It is after the all the best (and most expensive) foundation course in australia.... you don't want to pay 20k AUD for nothing, do you? Don't worry too much, I can guarantee that you'll be able to write that much by the time you reach term 4. cool2.gif flex.gif

By the way, what are you planning to do in university and what subjects are you doing in trinity?

Well..even though I suck in accounting, im taking up accounting in uni.

in trinity, it will be English, History of Ideas, Accounting, Mathematics (either 1 or 2), and 1 more subject...which i havent made up my mind yet.

any suggestions??  brows.gif  brows.gif

Edit: what does academic writing means??  sweat.gif  sweat.gif
*
hmm...let me see.... I guess you will benefit from taking both Maths 1 and maths 2 if you like maths. That will make 3 electives but I will suggest that you throw in another elective such as economics. You could always drop one subject if you think you can't handle it, but I think you'd do quite well with accounting, maths 1, maths 2 and economics.

I was aiming for something along the health science stream so I took maths 1, maths 2, chem and physics. When I received my results, I realised that taking 4 electives really paid off since all 4 of them contributed to my best 4 score.

Academic writing is the way universities want their essays to be written. It is mainly researching, building up an argument and writing an essay. You will be expected to use proper English register, grammar..etc and NOT plagiarize. Once again, don't worry...as Trinity will teach you academic writing in EAP and HOI.

QUOTE(ET_10 @ Jan 28 2008, 09:58 PM)
The foundation course at trinity takes four terms to complete? That's two years, right? I thought all Australian foundation courses only took a year.
*
No... There are 2 semesters (about 4.5 months each semester) each year and 2 terms in each semester. Thus, it makes 4 semester. You can think of a term as mid-semester. smile.gif
