Famous Chinese philanthropist makes waves online by giving an iPhone 6 to his entire high school class
Imagine receiving an iPhone 6 for free even before it’s available on the market. That was what happened to some lucky people in China.
According to Tech In Asia, the new iPhones, which will only officially be available in China on October 17, were given away by billionaire philanthropist Qian Fenglei.
The individuals who received the phones were not a particularly special group of people; they got it just because they were the billionaire’s former classmates in high school. All the iPhones were engraved with the words “Maoshan Middle School Class of ‘92”.
Recipients have posted pictures of their new iPhones online, which left some people wondering how they got the new phones when it’s not yet available.
It is unclear how Qian got the pre-release iPhones. However, being a billionaire, it is not surprising that he managed to obtain them.
This is not the first time Qian has given away free phones to his school mates. In 2013 he gave away an iPhone 5 to every former student who was present in his middle/high school reunion in July.
The billionaire is also well-known for other instances of giving. He made huge donations to aid relief efforts following the 2008 Sichuan and 2010 Yushu earthquakes.
He also gives out money to the elderly in his hometown during Chinese New Year.
Giving free gifts to former school mates however is a bit of an irony for Qian. He did poorly in high school and was even advised to drop out.
After the photos of the new iphones were posted, Qian’s story has also been circulating online. It serves as an inspirational anecdote for students to persevere as well as a reminder to treat their classmates well while in school.
