Nothing much for now even after an hour and half of work today, except striping it bare and some shots of the case (because I have a dilemma halfway). It's not gonna be a top of the notch project or all cos this is my first time working with steel after gradually moving from wood to acrylic. A look at the crap case.

If you're wondering what's American Apathy, its one of my fav band's new album (not really, since last year). They're called Dope. The tracks on the album has been played and replayed for like a million times, almost everyday. Some images of what you'll see on the case.

Today I woke up a tad earlier (9.30am) to strip the rivets. I found the case to be really small and doesnt give much space for work. Without the ability to use my jigsaw, this means there wont be much for today as I wont be able to cut anything and still deciding whether to unbolt all the rivets or to leave it (replacing those I un-rivetted with screws n nuts of course which looks nicer after I tried).

user posted image

user posted image

See the small space? It can only fit an 80mm fan at the back the most. Wanna find 10cm also susah. The green socket thing, I've removed it. I found that its just double-screwed to a traditional PCI slot. Obviously this case sux, unfortunately the china men who made it, think its cool. I had to LOL cos after using it for months i just noticed the audacity of the makers to put this:

user posted image

Worse, the screws and rivets almost kill a few brain cells. After I've drilled thru the center of the rivet, there's still a big chunk of shiet left which i have to remove with a wire cutter. In the process, I accidentally bended the top panel's side a lil (just a lil, need no hammering lol). The screw sucks big time. Look at the 2nd pic, the screw's DENTED in! I have to rip it out of the steel body and then remove it with a plier. The front panel looks a crap once i strip everything off.

user posted image

user posted image

user posted image

After removing 3 rivets, I turned the case around and was like "holy shiet there's like another 12938128301 rivets to remove". So I lay down my drill, take a smoke and starts pondering if I should continue with today's work. Dilemma. Time for consultation to either leave the top panel on and continue working with it another day, or continue un-rivetting everything. Need consultation from our modding expert.

This will be a sloooooooooooooooooooooow mod. The bad thing bout my work is 1pm-10pm on weekdays and 12pm-12am on weekends with only 1 day off only on weekdays. Try to work on the acrylic for the next few days for the internal layover before I start cutting the top panel and spraying everything on the frame. I can only mod a little by little a day, and do spray jobs on my offday. Stay tuned for updates.

Some minor accidents this morning. Finally got all the top panel rivets off after changing from a capalang drill bit that fits the rivet hole to a slightly larger B&D drill bit in an attempt to behead all the rivets (it worked).

user posted image

Slight sided cut when the drill was out of position halfway smoking.

user posted image

Drill tembus the center of rivet yesterday and just rammed into the internal side (luckily its internal). Threw away teh capalang drill bit on the spot. Not very noticable after bending it back since its located inside.

Then I smartly go "swipe" my middle finger against the ROM holder like a credit card, while washing the case (damn dirty). The white toilet seat turned dark red for like 15 seconds non stop so decided to cut the job. Tonite will work on acrylic, tmr will go get allen key, come back n start spraying.

Update 3 : 13/09

Very early today. 9pm oredi buka mata wanna cut something. First thing's first; respraying the frame cos some part are not completely covered after the first session. See my case relaxing n sunbathing with nice scenery behind kekeke.

user posted image

Test sprayed on a piece of unwanted acrylic a few nights ago, to see if the steel spray will lekat to plastic. It did, and it left a semi transparent cloudy look which I liked. Starting to think of doing that to the ROM/HDD holder's covers hehe tongue.gif

user posted image

THE SIDE PANEL.

Then comes the kan cheung part: Cos I never work with steel + jigsaw before. Somemore afraid will screw it up, but since i got another 2 hours to go b4 work, might as well stop the waiting and itchy hands. Here's the draw out, sorry the line's not too clear, i used mechanical pencil.

user posted image

I accidentally cut thru some part of the workbench thou tongue.gif . Not really done yet, the curves at the front side is not very well done (told you its my first time), so I'll re-cut it tmr and make it straight 90 degrees corner for the front. The back, I accidentally forwarded the jigsaw a little, causing a small extended cut, really small, i swear, really small laugh.gif Btw, my IC doesnt have "Ian Ho xxx xxx" written on it hence the accidents lol. Here's the result after some filing. There's still quite a lot of work need to be done to get a decent looking edge around it, so that'll be on tomorrow's update.

user posted image

user posted image

Well, thats all for today. I'll bring in some strippers to this thread.. i mean paint stripper, tomorrow. The top panel's still virgin cos I wanna make sure the exhaust fan wont interfere with my devices. So that'll have to wait till almost every other thing is done.

p/s: Uncle, tolong delete the few "Reserved for xxxx" posts", post #3 to post #6. No usage. Sorry for trouble

Update 4

Night time, after work got nth to do so decide to work on part of the side panel first. This will be an "extension" of the acrylic on the panel with the band's logo on it.

Morning came so cut it after working on the side panel. Used a pipe saw instead of my jigsaw. Not everything can be properly cut with a jigsaw in my hands.

user posted image

Stripping the paint off the side panel. Got some paint stripper on my hand, it just gets underneath ur skin and it starts to burn. Bloody cleaning auntie must have thrown away my gloves. Dammit. The brackets on top are really giving me headaches. Tmr need to use toothbrush on it.

Didnt do much work, decided to leave the unbalanced cut on the round edge as I have another plan for my side panel. Not before its fully done.

Update 5 (night mod)

Goin to try out the epoxy to see how well it'll bond between metal and plastic. Again, another first time when it comes to epoxy (used chloroform and silicone sealant on the previous project). Took a cut out from the ROM holder, spray painted it black on one side, and leave the other side. Glued it and left it to dry.

user posted image

user posted image

user posted image

Then I had work to do on the side panel. Applied thick layers of paint stripper to get the paint off the vents. It worked really well when I brushed it off with a hard tipped paintbrush (i dont really know what is generally called heh). Blasted it in the toilet to cleanly remove everything.

user posted image

Next, to cut the mounting acrylic for the side panel. I need some space at the back to accomodate the hinge (hate it). Since its past midnight, no jigsaw for me again, a metal saw should do.

user posted image

user posted image

That's the end of my night expedition. Come morning in update 6, i have the side panel to work on.

Update 6(morning mod)

Opened my eyes and saw the beautiful ultra bright sun so decided its time for some work. The side panel. Some spray painting need to be done after the paint stripping. And after that I took some shots at my fully dried chasis frame.

user posted image

user posted image

user posted image

user posted image

user posted image

And time to test the epoxy thingy i did last night. It bonds both surfaces really strong. Well, I guess the "2 Tonne" written on the packing is true after all heh. Then I decided to work on the cross. Cut out the vinyls cos I'm kinda lazy to spray it red. But the colour turns out shitty n not what I wanted, so I ripped out the vinyl, leaving it as the last pic shows. I need to redo the whole thing, the cutout on the vinyl is absolutely horrible, round edges turning edgy, straight lines turning curvy. Crap.

user posted image

user posted image

user posted image

Now, looking at the side panel from far might looks nice. Until I decided to take a closer look at my first layer paint job. THERE'S A FREAKIN MOSQUITO ON MY SIDE PANEL! And it wasn't there before i sprayed, so i must be one lucky mofo to spray on a mozzie while its flying, pinned it, and drowned it onto my side panel. So sanded it with 400 grid dry and re-spray the whole panel.

user posted image

user posted image

There's more work to do on the side panel. I might have an additional 1 hour tonight and 2 hour tomorrow morning to work on it. Around 3-4 more layers of wet sanding and re-spraying.

I dont intend to cut out the front fan grill... The back one, i just snip the grill off wtih a wire cutter and then file it round (not really very round).

Basically, if there's anyone here who is more impatient or more bad tempered than me, I'd think he/she should go into any world record, cos obviously, nobody can beat my hair-trigger temper.

But I just like the art, creating something diff out of something ordinary, thats why i get back on modding. After one project fail, I'll try the next and so it goes. UV-CMA is just like a test bed to me, unfortunately i picked the wrong level of difficulty to play with acrylic lol.

So to soon-to-be modders, every problem has a solution (even 911 so teruk d also got cure! laugh.gif )

Bad news:
- Running out of spray paint and acrylic (last can, only less than 1ft sq left).
- So far its gonna be delayed until all the pending tasks are done. Woke up like 10 mins b4 work time today, freakin tired every weekend have to work 12 hours per day dammit.
- Running out of cash as wel
- Donno how much Bondo (body filler) will cost

Good news:
- Lucky tmr offday can rush n buy from subang.
- Start bulking jersey to get some extra $$$ to feed my case

Besterestest news:
- Asking my friend to ship in a couple of stuffs from U.S., some including fighter pilot toggle switch and the original modder's mesh. thumbup.gif

Cant wait to get my hands on them. Oh ya, I have my worklog on TBCS and those mat salleh there are quite helpful there when you ask something. They say our grass is weird laugh.gif

Quite funny the way they talk about our grass and mosquito laugh.gif They're like very kira about sharp cuts on the edges, so quality comes first for them which is good. Do check out MDSC's mod in the featured worklog section, she got a very nice stock casing, very special shape.

I still havent got the chance to ask Paul Capello on "something" regarding my next mod. The next mod's gonna be a very very very tedious task to get it done. tongue.gif

Robbed a lot of screws and found a pack of free dampener from my friend's pc shop thumbup.gif . Bad news, air bubbles forming on my 3rd layer spray so tonight need to sand and spray 4th layer tmr morning. T'sall for now.

Darn.. cant work on anything for now... woke up to spray the LAST layer of paint, and the bloody spray can dipped a part of the paint leaving a gash... wtf.. needless to say, the can suffered some abuses for 10 minutes, and then some bloody newspapers flew on top of the half dried panel.... there goes my temper so i chuck everything in the room i kept half-dried paint jobs cos i know i cant work when im pissed. Cut another cross this morning, drilled the holes and will probably work on the logo tonight. Need to take a few days off modding first.

Update 7

OK, last night I was basically very pissed thru out the day due to my side panel, so night time its torture time. The spray can felt the local version of Roberto Carlos taking a free kick in his glorious days. Sanded my side panel with 400 grit dry, 800 dry, 1000 wet, 1500 wet, and finally 2000 wet.

Today the sun's not too strong due to the clouds early in the morning so sprayed 2 layers on it when the sun is bright and have a couple rounds of blackjack with colleagues while waiting. After that, time to work on the acrylic. Jigged the blowhole (quite but still not really round quality lol), used estimation to drill the screw holes for the cooling fan, and drilled some holes for the logo extension. Here's how it goes

user posted image

Cut a new piece of cross for the logo. Told you I was gonna chuck the piece of shit away.

user posted image

user posted image

And then its trial time. The bad thing is the leg of the hexagon stud's not too long, so I might have to find a replacement for it as I cant screw a nut onto the other side of the acrylic.

Took my finished paint job panel in (some dents are left by the spray can (yesterday's fury) and the attack of the newspaper, but it'll be covered up on the next phase. So this is how it'll look like:

Then I went to the store room to get the cover panels for the ROM/HDD holders to check on the spray job yesterday. Bright as expected.

Thats all for today, will try to work on the carbon fibre sticker tonight and put the plexi up by tmr, after spraying the inside of the panel. thumbup.gif

"The piece of shit" = i was referring to the old piece of cross (logo plat) i made where the spray job n carbon fibre sticker screwed up. So threw it off, drew another cross, cut it, buff the side.

It's a damn cool idea man. It's purpose is sorta like a 3 dimensional fan cover. The cross with the Dope logo covers the intake fan in the middle of the acrylic window.

@ Acey, is that centre intake fan a LED fan? It'll b really cool if it is. Coz the light from the fan will glow out from behind the cross n sorta gif the cross a floating look. Man, I'm so gonna copy this idea of ures in 1 of my mods in the future. Kekekekke I pay u 1 kopi-o for copyright licence.

So the cross is almost done, I'd go for the simple look instead of ultra complicated things i've thought off since i suck when it comes to working with vinyls. I left my exacto knife (the ultra sharp blade used for cutting stickers/vinyls) back in Sarawak, but hopefully can get my parent to send them over cos I'll need them.

user posted image

user posted image

I might rip the side carbon fibre vinyls off, and the wordings as well. Then cut out another for the back and spray it black on the back to give the floating look. You just might see a different cross by tomorrow. Lol.

Today the sun is bad, really bad. Its cloudy when I woke up at 8.30, and at 10 still not bright. So I decided not to work on any paint job today... sigh. I'm still not sure if the epoxy can really hold the side panel's plexi but hopefully it does, if it doesnt, I'll have to go for double-sided tape. Thats all for now.

Dilemma and short attention span

I cant really pay a lot of attention on this project for the mean time. Have a lot goin in my mind, and the only moment I can concentrate on AA is when I'm actually working on it. So my ideas just come out of the blue, some jig cuts, slap it on with epoxy and see what I get.

Short attention span due to the the next mod, which basically is going to be huge, hopefully on an equal scale to Paul Capello's DOOM 3 mod. I asked him 1 question (and answered by the master himself), and there's gonna be a lot more to ask.

I'll need a lot, a lot, and a freakin lot of measurements, materials, and planned work. Might take me even 6 freakin months to plan, make changes, and re-plan for the work, material, and measurements. Damn the lack of knowledge in materials. Further more I need to dig up some old CDs where the initial plan was in it. Yes, the next mod has actually been delayed for a year plus.

It'll involve 3 towers, 2 AT towers (those Pentium or 486 cases) at sides, and 1 full ATX tower in the middle. Am looking n reading around about airbrush n compressor, Bondo or putty filler, styrene sheets and carving tools. If you know which movie contains the character Vincent Price, you'll have an idea what theme I'm going for next.

Update 8 - Part I

Yayyy updates... Night modding cos I know I wont be awake until 12pm today, true enough I only slept at 5-6am. Decided to test out my "theory" of a 3D look for the cross with some lighting. I think it failed to give the look I wanted, I think, but before the whole rig is set up, I'll say I failed to get the look for now.

user posted image

user posted image

user posted image

It could be due to the black mouse pad at the background, but I'm not really sure if 4 CCFLs will be sufficiently bright enough to give it the shaded look for the cross.

Finished the side panel, but was in a dilemma in the process of finishing it (I've never done plexi + steel panel before). Stood over the panel and asking "silicone-epoxy-tape-silicon-epoxy-tape". So not wanting to screw it up when its already at this level, I decided to go with the double sided tape. I'll experiment with the silicone glue some other time. Decided to go for a border for the cross. So here are the pixies:

user posted image

user posted image

Time for the chasis to come into play and test the side panel. I do worry if the plexi prevents the side panel from closing right. Oh ya, I decided to drop the Lian Li PSU to ROM holder cover thing idea. The crap case is too tight to get a piece of 2.5mm bent plexi into the slot. So this morning I cut out another plain square piece that will be finished off tomorrow.

Fn hate LYN's policy of "you posted more images than allowed". At TBCS, I just chuck as many images as I want and the post will swallow it. Maybe its time they should do something like this for LYN's case mod section.

Now putting the side panel up, first without the cross, second with the cross. It seems like I dont even need some bolts for the hexagon studs that's holding the cross.

T'sall for today. Will start working on the top panel tomorrow. Btw, any of you have any idea how to take off the bottom 2 screws of Cooler Master eXtreme Power 430W PS? I can take off the top 2 but cant take off the bottom 2, and I really dont wanna leave it in its ugly greenish-grey colour. Bye.

Front panel work... minor update. Rainy afternoon so decided to take all my tools in and cant continue. The cut's bent cos I ripped off the masking tape tad too early. Well, no one's gonna see it either once the front panel's done. Then there's the rubbish plastic used for the panel, it melts really horribly during sawing. So have to knock it out with the end of my file and starts filing the melted edges clean.

user posted image

The whole idea is to get another face plat on the front of it, and leave some gaps at the side for the cooling fan to do its intake. Am still thinking if I should drill some holes at the side to screw the finished plexi in. The plexi's not even done yet, I need to get the total height measurement so I'll know where to bend and cut. I wanna cover the whole panel but the ROM slot's givin me plenty of sleepless nights as well.

Fixed the coupling nut (yeah, i've found out what its called) with silicone glue. Just a test phase, if it doesn't hold strong, then epoxy it is. Drilled 6 holes on both sides, apply some glue to the leg of the nut, push it in, and a huge blob of silicone at the back. I'll get back to it tomorrow, in the office by the way. Heh.

Update 9

Got off work at 3am, so need to balance my sleeping time a lil. So worked on the face plat for the front panel. Sketch it out with some big holes for intake. Changed my idea from going for a flat panel to something more conventional, and no bending as well.

user posted image

user posted image

user posted image

Used a saw to cut out the whole piece, and then it's already 5am so I just gotta wait a lil while to start my jig. Mwahahahaha the attack of the bladeless saw killer:

user posted image

Hahhhh! Morning! The sun's freakin bright and hot just like how I wannit. After filing the bloody sides its time to cut. If you look at the pic below, notice the red circle. I'll tell a short story for primary school story telling competition.

user posted image

First cut, the ROM space, so-so done. Filed. Second cut, first intake space, perfect. Filed. Third cut, Off/On button gap, so-so done cos the space is as tight as a virgin. Fourth cut, lower intake space, so-so done as I need to becareful not to crack the tiny space between the intake space and Off/On button gap. Last cut. KNN. When I was turning the jig, it went out of control. Kena possess by Pontianak Haram Sundal Pagi Cyberjaya bahhhh. The thing went "weeeeeeeuuuuukkkkkk", did some Initial D like drift, and I ended up with a bigger hole. Then my neighbours must think I'm crazy. For I talk to a jigsaw. "Why do you have to pull that shit on me on the last cut, dammit?".

After that collect my already-dried default front panel. Sucks but its gonna get all covered up with shiny black plexi when I'm thru with it.

user posted image

user posted image

So then I did some 1+1 = 2 thing.

user posted image

That's all. I was dying for a sleep. And I only slept for 5 hours. There's still another 70% to do for the front panel. Yep, what u saw's only 30%. Sorta. Umm.. maybe. I think so.

FYI, there will be a couple of modding and non-modding updates.

1. Will get tattooed on Monday so I wont be doin any mods while in pain for like a week to 10 days.

2. The front panel is going to be thrown away, and replaced with my initial plan of bending them, with much better cuts of course (Thanks to TBCS forummer a.Bird's advice). So yeah, Im gonna delete the pix of the acrylic from this worklog for now.

3. There are shit loads of great mods on TBCS, go read them up.

Went to get some stuffs yesterday. Got some screws and a new dvd writer (the old combo drive doesnt read dvd no more). I'm broke. But then I saw something at my friend's shop and I measured it. Its a second hand case that the owner traded in when he/she upgraded the system. Its 20cm wide, just what I'm lookin for the next project, and solid built on the inside unlike the flimsy metal AA has. The price?

A dirt cheap RM20. Its got some stains on the floor of the case, I'm gonna need a sander or something. Finally the case I'm looking for. Still, I'm not gonna need the front panel for the next mod. The bad thing is the side panel's a bit bent. Bent, not dent. So its kinda hard to close the left one.

What interests me is the ROM bay is not rivetted to the HDD bay meaning I can strip the HDD bay off. I wished I found it earlier and built AA based on it. No updates yet. Tattoo's healed but still plannin what to do next. I'll get on with American Apathy tomorrow. I'm having nightmares.. the next project keeps on calling to me and I've bought stationary sets and a can of putty filler for testing already. I still need help finding Bondo and styrene sheets in PJ/KL area.

Btw, I dont think will have updates for AA till end of this month... broke u see. I found Bondo at ACE Ikano (fn expensive), but changed my mind, gonna use putty filler instead for next mod. Gonna throw away the current front panel, thats 1+1=2 already. Its just not what I want, and I;ve got an idea to get what I want it to look like. Stay tuned. Expecting to get my dremel from Bombman next week biggrin.gif

Did some minor modding. Damn sien cannot sleep no acrylic to mod the front panel also. Niasing. At least it got me back on my modding mood. Cut out acrylic frame for the sides of front panel.

user posted image

Then tape them to check for extra length.

user posted image

After that cut top panel. Damn 7 noisy when jig meets steel, thats why I reserve top panel until now baru do. Even if I'm the master of impatience and screw ups, no worries, I did not pull a Superdav Supercut this morning.

Havent file the thing yet. Need to get some sleep cos oredi 3-4 days not enough sleep =/ Some designs havent cut out from the side of the top panel. Not gonna use jig n risk denting the panel, so gonna wait till some sihams to pay me money so i can bank in to Bombman for the dremel multipro.

Thats all for now. Oredi started the other side panel spray painting, but in teh process of creating a thread on how to cover up laugh.gif

Went out jalan-jalan today after cannot sleep n woke up at 11.30am. No more underwear n socks so have to buy d laugh.gif Then went to ACE after think to go or not to go. Bought and got my sleeve + heatshrink (black-red combi) from Vamp on Tuesday. But then at ACE changed my mind and decided not to use the sleeving, keep it for future use.

user posted image

Instead, I decided to go for these.

user posted image

user posted image

The smaller tubes I bought 4 feet, but after tubing one wire, almost half the tube gone T_T sweat.gif Didnt buy much cos dont know how much will be needed. Tubed one wire for testing and will do the rest soon.

user posted image

Didnt buy anything else, although I finally found black acrylic paint. Usually only found machinery grey. Then grabbed the full set of B&D drill bit, but put both down cos cannot resist a new pair of shiny Renoma. laugh.gif

user posted image

"Jiok san hai, chow dak fai" laugh.gif resign resign resign. Now the only problem is the PSU, bloody out of 4 screws 2 wont come out n screwed damn tightly by that cb cooler master. Keong kan the company. Top and front panel should be done by this week (depending on how early I can open my eyes tongue.gif ). Need another layer on the right panel and then some make up on the side panels. Tubing's givin me headache. doh.gif

Front panel work:

user posted image user posted image

Decide to make the vents available bigger, so decided to cut some part off the default front panel. Instead of using the normal blade, try using the one with bigger teeth to avoid plastic melting.

user posted image

user posted image user posted image

Since the bloody Cooler Master wont let me unscrew the bottom 2 for the 3rd time, sticker it is then. Or i might revert back to what i did in UV-CMA64, get a piece of plexi, spray it black, bend it according to the PSU's shape, and stick it on top of the PSU.

user posted image

user posted image

A shot of the cables. The PSU still separated from the case as without the top panel its freaking flimsy (bloody cheapo case).

user posted image

Thats all for now, cant really do much this week. Damn tiring office work with all those cup competitions around the world. DAMN.

Am getting really pissed with the company regulations... btw, I got my super 120mm from Ah Ngap today. Damn heavy they are. 2 are modded (White blades, black frame, red Naziled), 1 not modded. Gonner use 2 of them on AA and the other one for the next project. If i like them (soundwise, cfm wise is not a problem for these fans) then I'll get more from him for the next

tarak lar, but only got 1 tips for sure win.

1. Check the websites for Belgium/Brazil/Austria leagues.

2. Check table standings for teams.

3. If paria bottom table team play at home and give ball to top table team, whack family fortune on paria team. First half sure leading by 2-0.

Added on February 17, 2007, 12:27 amDeath of the project...
