8-pin is already meant for supplying 150watt, and the PCI-e slot itself is capable of 75watt. and that is already 225watt. iirc nvidia specs says of gtx 970's TDP is 165watt. (or was it 145watt but , nowadays msi gpu seems like being better and better. especially this new series of gpu

even overclocked version of gigabyte's gtx 970, only draws 177watt while gaming. only during stress test does it draw 242watt. however, do keep in mind that real gaming is nowhere near that heavy loaded as there are ups and downs of processing due to changing scene.
