Hi all, I would like to reformat my pc that running windows 10, my pc initially came with windows 8, should I do a factory reset then upgrade to windows 10 (I know is very troublesome and long process) or reset windows 10 under the recovery option? which way will be better? if I reset in windows 10, will the drivers still functioning after reset? Will my recovery partition delete too if i choose to clear all the partition when format? Thx..

Thought of sharing this here, and see what you guys think about this.
I upgraded my laptop to Windows 10 and fresh installed it in early August.
Things were going well, until last Tuesday, when my laptop screen decided to give up.

I last used it in the morning, and it was functioning well. I put the laptop in 'sleep' mode. And when I switched it on in the afternoon, the screen just won't show anything at all. I tried reinstalling display drivers also won't help. Had to plug it to an external monitor using the HDMI output to backup my laptop.

Sent it to authorized service centre, and got it fixed. I went to collect it today, found out they replaced the motherboard blink.gif , and reformatted my laptop, it's running a fresh install of Windows 8.1, just like when I just bought it.

When I was signing the service form the receptionist gave me, I saw a remark on the form writing: "Win10 not stable, ask customer better dun upgrade". The receptionist didn't mention anything regarding this, but I saw it while I was signing on the form nonetheless.

So, now I'm wondering, is it really possible that Win10 screwed up my laptop's motherboard? shocking.gif

which brand? which laptop model? if it's a common problem, i guess a lot of us here and in the world who have the same model with you and accepted the upgrade will report this. (i think it's not that hard to find that out with search engines) many laptop manufacturers have stated in their website which models that they will provide support for w10. it's good to check them out too. for those without official w10 support, you still can do it with a bit of research.

as for cases about ms screwing things up at hardware level, the one i am following are these (basically the same case):

https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/86...display-panels/
http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/wi...-panels.779449/

there are also speculations about ms modifying something in our hardware, http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows...atus=allreplies

note that all these are speculations, with no definite answers yet. if anyone who are not comfortable with hardware/software failures, it's really a good idea to not upgrade.

er yes of course the links i shared were not about your laptop model, but about speculations related to possible physical hardware damage due to w10 upgrade.

now you have told us the laptop model, i have checked it out at asus webpage for w10 upgrade, http://www.asus.com/event/2015/osupgrade/upgrade.html if you typed N550JK to look up if it runs w10, yes it's on the list. this means your laptop clearly supports w10, and asus has also provided compatible drivers for your convenience. (http://www.asus.com/my/Notebooks/N550JK/HelpDesk_Download/) i guess the asus tech staff that serviced your laptop was not aware of this.

How about torrent traffics? Will Win10 blocks it? In Win 10 EULA, Microsoft has the power to remotely interfere pirated games.

Win10 will not throttle the traffic. Despite that, in the EULA it is mentioned Microsoft can auto detect the software's configuration and stuffs as well as blocking them.

yes w10 doesn't block torrents, and ms eula only affects software, including games, from ms. (think xbox)

ms telemetry potentially leads to exposure of torrent trackers (especially private ones), so it was said that some owners are blocking w10. however, since ms already rolled out telemetry stuff into older w7/8.x, i think they might need to think of something else to overcome the issue. for normal users, the easier way is just boot linux liveusb and run transmission for torrents.

Yeah, I'm aware that my laptop is supported according to ASUS, I actually downloaded some drivers from their support website. That's why I'm wondering if I should trust the tech staff or not.
Maybe I should just stick to Windows 8.1 for now as it's quite stable, upgrade to Windows 10 only when the end of 1 year free activation period is near.

Only that tech staff knows what happened that caused the mobo to fail, but i suspect it's not related to w10. I cannot find anything that can relate mobo failure to w10 upgrade for your laptop model.

For max stability, yeah stock windows ftw smile.gif If there is no difference before and after upgrade, just do it at later time. Previously i did w8 upgrade from stock w7 hp because the version offered was w8 pro retail, and it got rid of ram limit.
