Here's a quick mod I did on Saturday b4 I got the stiff neck. laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif

The idea was to refurbish the original window which was really puny. It also had a plastic window which was all scratched up n the mounting nuts were also loose n falling off. So what I did was to chop off the old window completely n make a whole new XL sized window but also maintain the 2 intake fans.

Here's how it looks like b4 modding.

user posted image

Masked up, marked n in the process of cutting the window panel.

user posted image

Side panel n acrylic all cut n ready for mounting.

user posted image

Just a couple of shots to show the cut edges. For sum reason the focus was not what I wanted. I dunno y it's so difficult for the autofocus to focus on shiny black panels. It just wudn't autofocus properly n I had to force focus it n this is the best I cud get of the sides. The edges in these pix r still shining after my final detailing work. The final look is actually black edges coz I painted the edges black to prevent rust in the long term. This is becoz the quality of the metal on this panel is not as good as the branded cases. On the branded cases I leave the edges shining.

Voila! The finished XL size window with dual 80mm intake fans right over the gfx card area. If u look carefully thru the fans u'll c I also made sum of my sexay stocking+mesh fan filters so that the gfx card doesn't choke on dust after a while.

user posted image

Wheeeeeeee. Now that this is finished n my neck feels a lot better now. It's time to get down to Saving Private Joshiet. laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif 2moro is full steam ahead with Project 911.

Here we goooooooooooooooo with the pix. Here's how it looks after I modded the original window from this...................

to a much nicer window like this...........

That window mod was Stage 1. After the patient went home for some recuperation, it became like this. New facelift side window............ laugh.gif

Home DIY sleeving by the owner didn't turn out as expected. The sleeves used r too big n baggy n also ran out of the colored heatshrinks. Also not enuf sleeving to finish off the rest of the cables as can b seen here. This has always been the problem with Vantec sleeve kits. They never gave enuf of the small sleeves n heatshrinks. Looks a lil messy. I'm gonna clean up the wiring with all new sleeves in proper sizing n sum wire management.

...to be continued again shocking.gif

i think i see red and green curly fries in there. LOL.

i noticed one thing there...the problem with some "low cost" casings :
one of the steel slot cover plates are missing. Some manufacturer assume u gonna use 1st slot, so they dont bother to put anyway. But sometimes the position of the board is not accurate, so agp card position not in 1st slot. or sometimes u cabut the plate out, but got no way to put back. what happened to last time when they have the plate which you can take out and put back???

so in the end, very sien cos got one hole there...like invite lizard go inside doh.gif

Ya lor. The cheaper cases come with stamped PCI covers. Once u pop it off u can't put it back in to cover the hole. Haf no fear, I haf spare PCI covers that can be screwed back in to cover the hole.

Norton SystemWorks is a bullcrap app, I stopped using it years ago as it sucked up a lot of my CPU resources doing nothing.

Updatessssssssssssssss.

Here's the chassis being painted in matt black. It's all done in my newly built paint booth. I converted 1 of the bathrooms into a paint booth. It's fully enclosed n dust free. I also installed proper exhaust fans to ventilate the room.
I built a new paint booth so that I can now paint in a dust free environment, this will make the paintjobs a lot nicer n more consistent.

Starting with the 1st coat of paint.

user posted image

Almost there........... this is the 2nd coat. I'm giving it a total of 5 coats to make it nice n even.

user posted image

N here's sum bling bling I got for the rig. It'll be going in once I start installing everything.

user posted image

more updates soon. There's a nice surprise comin up soon. I'll be taking pix of it after I finish the hardware install. It's gonna be niceeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

If you've cut a blowhole on the exhaust fan, why don't u cut a blowhole for the front intake fan? blink.gif

I know what u meant. Just that, there's no need for so much efficiency at the front intake coz there's more than enuf intake oredi.

Look at all that dust on the HSF! I bet the CPU runs at least 2-3C hotter with all that dust there. I'll be cleaning all that up b4 installing everything back in.

Here's a close up of the dust bunnies.

1 of the SATA cables is UV green. The other is stock standard red. Kinda mismatched. I had a little bit of UV sleeves left so I tot I'd put it to good use on the SATA cable. Howzabout that? A normal looking red SATA cable turned into UV green. thumbup.gif thumbup.gif thumbup.gif

Well, I was just experimenting with the sleeving on the SATA cable. I'm not happy with the way the heatshrink looks. For sum reason it shrank kinda lopsided n it doesn't look perfect. Small little things like that drive me mad. I'll be cutting off the heatshrinks 2moro n redo the heatshrinks for a perfect fit.

As for the fan, god knows how long it hasn't been cleaned. laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif
BTW, it's not my rig. Look at my sig, King Kong n Ch3@psk8 r mine. The rest r all my Projects. I'm too fussy n obsessive to allow my rig n fans to get dirty like that. biggrin.gif

Now we get to my favorite part of Project Sidewinder. A custom acrylic panel with custom logo painted on it. This is the same mod I did for Project 911. I've added a twist to it this time. See that Razer logo? It's painted on. The whole exterior is completely smooth as baby's bottoms. thumbup.gif thumbup.gif

Remember I sed earlier that the snake needs a 3rd visit to the doctor? Here's y. That white snake logo is actually translucent like the Apple logo on Mac notebooks. If n when the snake comes back for a 3rd visit to the clinic then I'll b adding stuff to finalise the mod for it. The final mods will make the snake logo glow just like the Apple logo. I can also make it glow in any color. That wud be soooooooooooooooooooooo awesome. BUT let's c if the snake comes back to the clinic again. tongue.gif

That's it folks. Project Sidewinder is complete for now.................................

Might I be so bold as to suggest this for Sidewinder's 3rd visit to the doctor? (kinda like the continuous covering piece on the lian-li cases running from the PSU to the 5 1/4" bays).

user posted image

The exposed cabling from the PSU just doesn't cut it for me man.

But what a fantastic job on the polishing man. Quite visibly shinier than the earlier pictures.

Cover d then no more UV look lor. The only thing I don't really like now is the position of the 2x80mm fans blocking the view of that looooooooooooooooovely heatpiped monster 7900GTX. Lol this thread is getting kinda dirty.

But damn, video cards have started using heat pipes as well? What to do...you still need those intakes. Some more it's ngam ngam at the video card which I assume would be the hottest piece of hardware in there.

Here we gooooooooooooo. Updates.

Opened up the rig to rewire the UV CCFL. This particualr brand of UV CCFL doesn't come with an on/off switch. So I had to make 1 for it.

The switch is done. I will mount it to that PCI bracket cover.

Close up of the switch.

Will update sumore later. I'm working on the Razer logo n side window panel right now.

Totally agree with lolhalol.. i never like Asus non deluxe board as the color chosen for the PCB .... it just spoilt the day and hardly any case will match the color...

why can't Asus take in consideration when choosing color for their general mobo color....

Well, the problem is always working within a budget. Not everybody can afford to splash $ everywhere. The owner of Sidewinder is still a student. It's already a really nice rig considering that fact. thumbup.gif Anyway with UV look the mobo doesn't get highlighted in the dark so it's sorta hidden from view. laugh.gif

Ya lor. Dunno y Asus uses that horrible yellow for the budget mobos. Yep the switch is nice but if got budget to use the Ignition button n safety lock switch like the jetfighter type even more chun. But those types of switches cost a lot of $. About rm120 just for the switch itself.

After making the switch n checking that everything works fine. I realised a silly mistake. Look back at the pic of the switch installed on the slot cover. Notice anything? I installed it on the wrong side. laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif The switch shud b installed facing the other way. The way it is in this pix means the switch is inside n the wires r outside the case. rclxub.gif

Anyway, I swapped the switched around n put it on the right side n installed the slot cover n voila. That's it for the CCFL mod.

Hehe. That switch can take off the red knob 1. It's a rubber cap only. Can just slide it off then it'll just be a chrome switch.

It's not about the cost man. It's all about the pride of having a 1 of a kind case right down to exactly how u like it n want it to b. That's the real satisfaction. thumbup.gif thumbup.gif

Updatessssssssssssss.

Moving on to the rear mods for the 120mm fan grill. This case has a rear panel that allows the use of 80, 90 n 120mm fans. Funny thing about it is that if u install a 120mm fan there, u cant use a fan grill coz it will block the rear panel from closing properly. So here's the story on the rear mods for the grill.

Here's the 120mm fan grill painted in matt black n ready for installation. Originally it's chrome n really doesn't suit most case themes coz chrome is just so ol skool.

Now it's on to the side panel mods to allow the panel to close properly with the grill on. Cutting of the slot in progress.

Side panel is cut n ready. That cut out slot alllows the panel to close properly now.

Ok. Sidewinder is finished. Done. But then again, who knows, it may get lost in the jungle n end up at my place again. laugh.gif

Anyway, here r the pics.

Here's the remodded side panel with the Razer logo. It's now in neon green. It still has the option to be modded for a rear backlight so that it glows later. thumbup.gif

Hehehehehe. All thanks to the ancient art of scale modelling. Nowadays nobody pays attention to scale modelling. I think new age kids don't even know what scale modelling is anymore. Scale modelling is the 1st step to a steady pair of hobby hands. If u learn scale modelling, everything else is peanuts. Nowadays cant even find a proper scale modelling shop anymore. cry.gif cry.gif cry.gif The last good 1 was at 1Utama but that closed down many many moons ago.
