Liverpool duo Philippe Coutinho and Jordan Henderson will be assessed this week after Brendan Rodgers confirmed today that the pair have picked up groin and hip injuries respectively.

The former was not included in the matchday squad to take on West Ham United on Saturday due to a groin problem and is 'highly unlikely' to feature in the Capital One Cup against Middlesbrough.

Vice-captain Henderson, meanwhile, will have a hip strain monitored as the manager prepares his squad for the visit of the Championship outfit for a third round tie tomorrow evening.

"We just need to assess one or two," Rodgers explained to reporters gathered at Anfield for a pre-match press conference this afternoon.

"Jordan Henderson picked up a knock so we need to assess where he's at. And Philippe Coutinho is highly unlikely for tomorrow as well."

Continuing his update on the options available for selection, the boss outlined how the current situation could provide an opportunity for a number of young players.

"We haven't got any guys returning," he said. "Glen Johnson is still out. Joe Allen and Emre Can aren't fit. Daniel Sturridge won't be fit. Young Jon Flanagan has obviously had his operation.
Expect the lineup against Boro to be very weak on paper and full of kids.

QUOTE
Daniel Agger insists he left Liverpool because of a rift with Brendan Rodgers and did not feel 'appreciated' by the Reds manager.

The Denmark defender had been a preferred choice of previous Anfield bosses, but he called time on his Reds career after falling out of favour last season.

Agger returned to former club Brondby in the summer after eight years on Merseyside and claimed he could no longer work with Rodgers after a breakdown in their working relationship.

"Let me put it this way, me and the manager were perhaps not on the same page last season. For most of the season at least," he told Danish sports channel TV3 SPORT.

"He and I maybe went wrong with each other because I am very direct. I say things as they are, so I expect people will be the same to me. Maybe it's wrong to expect this sometimes.

"There was much (distance) between us, and for me it was just enough. I felt he didn't appreciate the things I could do and contributed. When I feel that, then it's time to move on.”

Agger was unable to hold down a regular role in the last campaign, despite featuring in some impressive wins, including both Premier League victories over Manchester United.

The 29-year-old Denmark international felt that Rodgers did not value his contribution, forcing him to consider his future.

“When you are a part of the starting 11 for several games in a row and the team have performed well, and you feel that you have played well, then you are left out of the team and don’t feel appreciated, it starts to prey on your mind and you wonder," he said.

“Then at the same time you see the statistics from your game - which are so important all around the world of football - and you don’t understand why you weren’t used more often.”

But Agger still respects the coaching abilities of Rodgers, who so nearly ended the club’s long wait for a league title.

"I think he is an incredibly talented manager. You can't take that away from him. He's good in the way he trains and he is clever in the way he sets the team up. He's an extremely, extremely competent coach," he added.

"The things that went wrong between us is that I say things the way they are and I expect others to treat me the same way. Maybe it is wrong to always expect this.”
Shame the way it ended. Could really use him now.

Disjointed midfield. No urgency whatsoever. Our fans would be raging if not for the fortuitous goal.

Damn that was dire to watch. No one making runs behind. Markovic and Lambert are terrible.

Lallana is our best player tonight and the combination play for the goal Suso scored was the only good offensive move we had all night.

Even Sterling was pretty poor tonight. Often trying too hard running with the ball into nowhere and losing it far too easily.

Best moments in the game are during the penalty shootout...

Mignolet keeps diving to his right after his initial left dive for a save. When he eventually dives left the taker shoots right. Mig's f*ck me face.

Sterling's "F*ck that!" after the miss.

Balotelli didn't celebrate after scoring the first but smiled after producing the same move and shooting to the same spot for the second one. A little "I got you again!" to the Boro keeper.

Lucas' "Come on Simon!" after scoring his 2nd of the shootout. Frustrated his keeper can't seem to keep one out despite touching or was close to a couple of shots.

The amusement of the players and staff's faces at the length of the penalty shootout.

Last season when Coutinho had the ball, all 3 of Sterling, Suarez and Sturj will be making off the ball runs looking to break in behind. Now we have static Balotelli and Lambert.

I can see Balo adapting to our pressing and is working hard at times but he is too static when we have the ball. He is always standing with his back to goal and when he receives the ball he stops play and slows tempo by holding on trying to turn or eventually passing the ball back to be recycled again.

What Suarez would do is to take the pass in his stride and run at the defence. Even if his back is to goal he would make some clever turn as soon as he receives the ball to either draw a foul or escape his marker.

Markovic is looking like our worst signing of the summer. Yes he is young but judging from what we've seen he is looking really bad. Nothing like the pacey runner with the ball we have seen from highlights. He looks terrified of the ball always looking to pass it away and rarely ever runs with it. When he does his poor touch tends to push the ball too far and loses it.

Suarez was the catalyst. When they had him in the team they would feed him the ball and everyone would start running into space looking to break because they know the brilliance of Suarez would make something happen and the ball will make its way to one of them. Now we have a bunch of ball watchers standing around waiting to receive the ball and this slows down tempo. Even Sterling is occasionally a culprit for overrunning the ball.

Rodgers riding on Suarez's coat tail? biggrin.gif

Seems legit.

Putting words in my mouth are we?

No doubt Suarez is important but he is irreplaceable. Not even Alexis Sanchez would've made a difference if our players suddenly started stopped making off ball movements.

Lack of confidence or overconfidence or both? Let's not forget we have lots of new boys in the lineup. It's apparent that there is a lack of confidence and trust between players - why would I make a run into space when I don't think you can get me the ball or would even pass the ball to me? I guess I'll just stand around in front of you to make it clear that I want the ball!

Balotelli often found himself lacking service and dropped deep for the ball. Even then teammates often looks past him and makes a pass elsewhere. Result? Balotelli looks to make space to make improbable shots from range everytime he gets the ball. But is that it or is it the other way around? Balotelli looks to shoot from range and create things for himself far too often hence the lack of trust of the midfielders in him. Why pass him the ball to waste a chance from range? Seems like a vicious cycle to me.

Suarez too lacked trust in his teammates in his early days. He has eventually come to trust his teammates more and they clicked. The chemistry that was there is now gone and Rodgers has got to brew it again as soon as possible.

Experienced and good players can be coached to adapt to a system. Players who are not playing according to the system or instruction can be managed to buck up.

Our new players are good and not inexperienced. That's why I think the coaches and manager have slackened this season.

While the Boro players defend in numbers, they can counter attack in frightening speed and with energy. Our players are slow, even static and certainly are no longer consistently running off the ball, as many of us have pointed out.

Yes, there are a few players who really don't seem up to par so far this season :

- Mignolet : made some dreadful mistakes for an experienced international
- Lambert : one cannot imagine someone playing for his favourite team, having so little passion and energy
- Toure : what can motivate him?
I don't blame Gerrard at all - who doesn't grow older and weaker/slower? It's up to BR to analyse how best to use his strengths (and Gerrard still has lots) and pre-empt situations where his weaknesses may be exploited.

So I feel, after these 7 games, I'd say : Hey BR, wake up man!!!

Sorry but I don't see why the blame game on Kolo again. He conceded the penalty but it was Sterling who gave the ball away and it is not the first time he has lost the ball leading to a goal in the final minutes of a game. Kolo now a 33 year old who's started in his first official match in ages just went through 120mins of excrutiating football. Bar the penalty he had an excellent game.

Liverpool have lost only one of their last 15 Merseyside derbies in the Barclays Premier League.

Everton have scored only five goals in their last 12 Premier League games at Anfield.

The Toffees have not won away at Liverpool in the league since September 1999 (L7 D7 since).

Raheem Sterling has been involved in nine goals (six goals, three assists) in his last 10 Premier League appearances.

Mario Balotelli has scored just one goal in his last 19 Premier League games, this despite attempting 37 shots (excl. blocked) in these games.

In his final 19 games in the Premier League, Luis Suarez scored 12 goals.

There have been a league-high 24 goals in Everton's Premier League games this season, an average of 4.8 per game.

Last season, Liverpool's Premier League games averaged a league-high 4.0 goals per game (151 in 38 matches).

Liverpool have kept only one clean sheet in their last 11 Premier League games.

Everton have scored at least two goals in each of their last seven Premier League games. The Toffees have never scored 2+ goals in eight successive PL games before.

How did Markovic get in the starting 11 again? and Sturridge failed his late fitness test? Sad.

Balotelli's movements in the box can be better. Tries too hard outside of the box.

Balo doesn't sprint down channels on counters. Always looking to get the ball to run instead of finishing.

Once again as Carra has pointed out time and time again last season. When we try to protect a lead we tend to sit deeper and deeper hence inability to retrieve the ball for possession. Every time we clear the ball, they come again. Happened again didn't it.

Well, how often has he given it a go? I can't be 100% sure but I think the Liverpool players were already in/around the box marking the most obvious of threats.

But yes, they were sitting quite deep towards the end, but I guess the pressure of winning a derby game at home made them nervous.

It has happened many times last season and has yet to be rectified. Coaches are at fault here. Can't exactly pinpoint a scapegoat for that wondergoal, can only blame ourselves for inviting pressure. Still lacking sharpness in the final third. Lallana our MOTM for me.

On the positive side, Moreno and Manquillo looking really good at proving width on both flanks. Even Lovren looked good tonight. Lallana never stopped running on and off the ball despite playing all of 120 minutes last match. His close control of the ball is superb. Only thing letting him down is his lack of pace.
