Astro Malaysia Holdings Bhd expects its home shopping joint venture with South Korea’s Go Home Shopping Inc to generate RM500mil in annual revenue by 2019.

Astro said the 24-hour shopping service was on Astro TV (Channel 118), Astro On The Go as well as GO Shop’s online and mobile platforms.

The total capitalisation of the JV company is RM70mil and is estimated to generate RM500m in annual revenue over five years.

Astro said this was its foray into e-commerce where Malaysians could “shop anytime, anywhere 24/7 via any mobile, tablet and PC of their choice”.

Astro expects Go Shop to be a strong catalyst for Astro in terms of future earnings growth as it targets 4.3 million homes and 17 million consumers.

Astro Malaysia Holdings Bhd, the country's largest pay television provider, plans to quadruple its registered individual users to 3 million within the next five years, from 800,000 currently.

“Malaysians are sophisticated consumers, increasingly watching content outside the home, online and offline. Today, we see a rising demand for Video on Demand services, [and] Astro’s new On Demand (OD) is our new complementary way of consuming content, at home or on the go,” she said during the launch of Astro’s latest OD today.

Astro currently has a customer base of 4.6 million customers, or approximately 65% penetration of Malaysian households.

Astro is unchanged at present, satellite-pay TV and live streaming Netflix is in a way two different things. Maybe their Astro First may be affected from Netflix's entry. Think iFlix is the first one to go down, so called for the name with the suffix -flix.

Just played around with Netflix, problem is that, at present, there are quite few movies to watch. Netflix is more towards TV series/shows for now at least. May not happen in the short term but it could affect in the long run. Same with iFlix.

For Astro, at least they have BPL, news channels (but then who watches them nowadays) and local contents with Chinese, Tamil shows. Those contents are safe for now too unless Netfix starts showing those local contents but then don't think Netflix will focus on these segment.

anyone who has used:

astro
hypptv
iflix
netflix

will know there is no future for a.

becos it is just incapable of innovating, cling on to old ways to charge users.

it can hang on to supersports and maybe wahlaitoi while spending millions fighting pirates, that's all.

u can get uhd 4k contents on netflix.

even dvd/bd shops will soon close or downsize, just like photo print shops in the 90s.

i am surprised a seems to have no plan how to rejuvenate itself.

I guess management is rather traditional in astro, one can even say Malaysia as a whole no hope for innovation at all.
You know what's gona happen next, astro will petition and request that the gov ban netflix to secure their future.

yep, like what happened with uber.

really, the mindset of many is still very feudalistic, unprepared for e-commerce.
