Hi,

I plan to extend my backyard but yet decided what material to use for roof. Think of glass and normal concrete
roof, which will be more expensive ?

Thanks.

of course glass more expensive.and u must only use tempered weather resistant glass for outdoors.of course it looks very trendy but u have to pay the price.not to forget the maintenence of the glass.not practical unless u have money n time

Not much maintenance. But be prepared for bright sunlight coming I to the area if you choose glass.

IMO, a few factors you need to consider
1. The purpose/usage of the backyard Vs. the practicality of the material
2. The security
3. Source of light & air flow
4. Cost Vs. Budget
5. Maintenance

If this backyard does not required any practical function, I think tempered glass will be very nice if the budget can afford it. Bear in mind that it is calculated based on sq.ft. It will give you natural light to your backyard, and you can install some LED down-lights as well. Maintenance wise, you will see a thin layer of dust sometimes (just imagine you didn't wash your car for weeks, and what you will see on your wind-screen nod.gif ), hence you need to clean it from time to time.

The backyard is for my laundry. Sunlight is good but probably I need to consider the cost and maintenance.

The purpose for backyard is for my laundry if glass roof is practical. Good example as car windscreen, but for
this case I may use darker colour instead of transparent glass colour. Any idea how much the cost for 1 sq. ft. of tempered glass? Will it be more expensive by doing concrete tile roofing?

If this is similar to the glass roof for car porch, I was quoted between RM45-50 psf with 10mm thick tempered glass, hollow frame.

I heard PVC will only last about 10 years, after this need to change. Is this correct?

Nice concept that is. but would be more suited to tropical countries. may be can limit the size to a smaller area. else items beneath fade easily. rolleyes.gif

Fall in love with this picture.

Might do like this if budget allowed. Maybe by using different material since I believe there is a lot of other material can be use beside glass.

PVC or polycarbonate?

TS, if no budget constrain go for glass, or else concrete roof.
Reason is natural lighting

After went through the website that you posted, the carbon fibre UPVC is the solid material and the sunlight will
not go through. For this case will not appropriate for me.

This is good point. Fungus is probably the main issue of using glass or pvc material for roof?

LEXAN* , 3 DECADES OF PROVEN PERFORMANCE IN STADIUM ROOFING

Municipalities and other organizations making the large investment in these facilities are concerned about construction, maintenance, and utility costs, as well as durability and safety – particularly in view of recent extreme weather events.

One way to meet all these requirements is to utilize high-performance engineering thermoplastics to construct stadium and arena glazing systems. The popularity of plastics for construction glazing is driving development of new materials that can address virtually any challenge – from thermal control to self-cleaning to special tints and effects.

Today’s sports stadiums and arenas combine unique design concepts, with tough requirements for safety, weatherability and code compliance.

Lexan* PC sheet delivers the clarity of glass without its drawbacks of weight and fragility, enabling award-winning and unique designs and a safe, satisfying experience for attendees.

Our materials are playing a critical role in the construction of public buildings because they combine outstanding performance, environmental responsibility and aesthetics
