Many goldbugs bought in 2011/12, more appropriate and realistic to compare with this period.

Those are not gold bugs.. They are sheep...

Many sheeps are like that.. They buy at the end of a bull cycle. Like those sheep buying cryptos at end 2017..

In a way, many of us are sheep. We are led by news, commentaries, recommendations, etc.

The thing is there are wise sheep and blind sheep.

I was introduced to bitcoin in around 2010 when it was $0.10   biggrin.gif

Bitcoin at 0.1? U could have been a billionaire now.. (or are you already?).

About 15 years ago, a relative asked my opinion on investing in gold. Being the "finance guy" of the family, I advised him against it.. Using the theory arguments I read so often here.. No dividend yield, not productive, speculation bla bla. it was a bodo advice and indeed gold humbled me... Learned my lesson in humility.

Now gold is an important part of my portfolio. I consider it more like a cash reserve, not an investment per se...MYR, USD and Gold. These are my cash reserves.

And I did buy a few hundred dollars worth of bitcoin earlier this year too 😆

Answer these questions..

1. What's ur outlook for global economy in the next few years? Positive or Negative?

2. What's ur outlook for Malaysia in the next few years? Positive or Negative?

If negative for both.. then Gold will be very good in the next few years. If negative for just one, gold will still be decent.

If positive for both, gold will suck..

Whatever ur view.. Always think "what if I'm wrong?" and prepare accordingly..

Dorian hurricane could be game changer to stop gold up further ?

No.. But a US-China trade deal could. US and China officials are meeting next week.

In the longer run, gold will still go up, once a global recession comes.

Hopefully.

At the global recession in 2008, their effort to fix the economy caused Gold to go up from RM80 to RM180 in 4 years. Cagr of 22.5% pa..

This. But I am still holding for now. I don't see a sell signal yet for precious metals.

Long term trend still up.

But prices never move in a straight line.. Up and down, this is what we call volatility.

And ppl who can't handle volatility please stick to ASx or FD (which returns are declining BTW).

So confident that gold will keep going up? Think you can hide your money in gold during a trade war?  Every investment is a speculation, you need to face the reality that you are actually speculating.

Gold will come down to 1300. You will keep holding your losing long position and your happy face will turn into pale, and i will laugh at that time. Then you become panic and the emotional outburst is so great. You call it enough and sell. Then i will buy. That should happened somewhere in April 2020. Hahahaha...
*
April 2020.. That's so short term.. But definitely if it gets that level again, I will also buy a kilo or two.

Volume is not great if you compare with stocks but it is improving. Furthermore, ETFs have Market Makers who will provide liquidity. So I would say that liquidity is not an issue. The volume is just merely a reflection of awareness as many people are not aware of ETFs. The other thing is that trading the goldetf requires cash upfront. This is a shariah requirement. So trading it might still be of a little hassle if your broker block it for the reason that they have to ensure that your account has cash before trading. So you might have to end up calling your broker if you can buy it online or through their app.

As to your second point, you are absolutely right ie if gold price stays the same in USD, and MYR appreciate, then the gold etf price will decrease. On the flip side, if gold price stays the same but MYR depreciate, then the gold etf price will increase.

Depends on what your view is. If you think crisis will hit, usually both gold and USD will appreciate at the same time because they are both safe haven assets. smile.gif

Do you know of any Malaysian broker that allows me to trade online with a cash online accont, without having to make a phone call? This need to make a phone call first is irritating n not convinient.

As far as I know, you need to open cash upfront accounts. Most broker would have that and the rates are good. If you transact through cash upfront accounts, then trades are not blocked. If I'm not wrong, Hong Leong and M+ have quite good rates for their cash upfront account.
*
I know u need cash upfront account. I currently use 2 cash upfront accounts. One is CGS CIMB Itrade and another is Rakuten. But both still require me to call first before I submit an order online. They want to check my cash which is very silly since they should have all the records.

I would like to know which broker I can trade online without having to make time wasting phone calls before every trade. The AHAM website doesn't have the info. If u have that info it would be good to share then maybe I can open my account with that broker.

Hi everyone,

I'm new here. Want to get some opinions on the best way to buy gold for long-term investment holding.

1. I set aside x% of my income for gold, so I might want something where I can top up easily on a regular basis
2. I don't prefer bullion physical gold, because of risk from keeping it at home
3. I want something that allows stable long-term custodianship, ie invest and forget about it, and MOST IMPORTANTLY, no need to worry that the platform/entry channel being gone one day
Please advise and thanks in advance

Minimum redemption basket is 500,000 units as of dated 06/03/2020, or 5kg goldbar per redemption, they’re targeting cash rich scapegoat who can spare millions. And the company is based in Singapore, too many red flags, but all gold bugs are pure idiot who will throw money for anything with the name “gold”, this idiots are their perfect darting targets. Since golds are getting very difficult to collect at big sum for many reasons, they found a good opportunity to arbitrate from unsespecting buyers, “buy bulks of gold in one go”, how does it didn’t attract the attention of cash rich but hungry and desperate gold bug who eager to turn their cash into gold no matter its real or fake.

Duuh

Gold etf is by Affin Hwang asset management, which is one of the big fund manager and licensed by the SC. It's owned by Afin Bank licensed by BNM. And the Gold ETF itself is regulated by Bursa Malaysia and SC.

The gold is kept in Singapore by Standard Chartered bank.

This is legit n I own some units.

It’s legit and you should buy 500,000 units, and redeem that delusional gold. Backed by blah blah, you can say BNM can give you FDIC up to 250,000 or so, that make no sense too to keep 1m in FD.
*
500k units is more than RM1m. Don't have that much allocated to gold. I aim about 5-10% only of my portfolio.

But this one is an ETF, can buy and sell 100 units on stock market. Ever heard of GLD?

There is so many option to obtain “gold” at 5 grams each, redeem also far less hassle from BNM gold bar

Maybank MGIA
Public bank
HL bank
Muamalat bank

Or option to obtain physical one from physical pawn shop
Tomei
Poh Kong
Public Gold
Any LBMA accredited outlet.

But you insist on the one that has least transparency, one word for you, pure idiot.
** gold etf is not LBMA accredited, they’re on their own.
*
A gold etf, of course, is not LBMA accredited, it's a fund. The gold bars that the fund owns is LBMA accredited.
