Gold jumps above $4,000/oz again after Trump?s tariff warning on China

Gold popped back up above the $4,000-an-ounce level on Friday, set for an eighth straight weekly gain, after U.S. President Donald Trump?s warning of possible fresh tariffs on China accelerated a flight to safe-haven assets.

Spot gold was up 0.8% at $4,007.39 per ounce as of 11:18 am ET (1518 GMT). The metal has gained 3.2% so far this week.

U.S. gold futures for December delivery rose 1.3% to $4,024.40.

Non-yielding bullion, which hit a record high of $4,059.05 on Wednesday, is traditionally considered a hedge during times of broader uncertainty.

Geopolitical risks, alongside strong central bank gold-buying, exchange-traded funds inflows, U.S. rate cut expectations and economic uncertainties stemming from tariffs, have all contributed to gold?s rally.

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday there is no reason to meet with China?s President Xi Jinping in two weeks in South Korea as planned. The U.S. is calculating a massive increase in tariffs on Chinese imports, he said in a Truth Social post.

Trump?s post has seen stocks collapse a percent in minutes and gold surging back above $4,000, said Tai Wong, an independent metals trader. ?Heating up the trade war again will tank the dollar and be good for safe-havens.?

Markets are also closely monitoring the risks related to the potential collapse of the French government and the ongoing government shutdown in the United States.

Besides, investors are anticipating the U.S. Federal Reserve to cut interest rates by 25 basis points each in October and December.

?On balance, there is a risk of a short-term pullback in prices given how quickly gold prices have risen in recent weeks. But over the next couple years, gold prices are likely to grind higher,? Hamad Hussain, climate and commodities economist at Capital Economics, said.

Adding to gold?s rally, the U.S. dollar fell 0.6%, making greenback-priced bullion cheaper for overseas buyers.

Silver is also benefiting from the same factors driving gold?s rally, alongside concerns about supply deficit and rising demand for the metal.

Silver rose 2.2% to $50.21 per ounce, a day after touching a record high of $51.22. It has gained 70% so far this year.

Silver futures on Comex for December 2025 were trading at $48.03.

?Silver?s backwardation is a loud signal ? physical demand is crushing paper supply... If backwardation holds and physical demand keeps rising, silver breaking and sustaining above $50 is very realistic,? said Alex Ebkarian, COO at Allegiance Gold.

Backwardation is when a commodity?s spot price is higher than its futures price.

London is running out of physical silver, silver lending rates is now 19%.
silver backwardation will get worse; silver paper trade can collapse anytime.
i tried to buy a couple more 10oz silver bars at Silver Bullion yesterday - there were 7 bars, new stock - gone within an hour!

from the various reports, gold & silver are leaving London, all going to USA, China and other central banks.
Silver is now classified as critical metal in USA.
gold retail sales are now catching up in many countries, long queues sighted.
add the latest geopolitical tussles in EU-ukraine-Russia, USA-CHina, things can only get more intense.

gold & silver rush is on! next week guaranteed to be fun! biggrin.gif

Yesterday, something ignited a sense of Deja Vu as precious as gold over decades.

A corner house turned restaurant serving, in my humble opinion, the best chicken pie in Penang: Yaw's @ Midlands. While chatting with the boss, I learned he's the second generation owner of the old Pulau Tikus Top Top restaurant:stirring up memories from some 50-55 years ago.

Hmm, what's the forum ground rules? As long as 'gold' mentioned, can post, right?

the gurus are saying gold will get to $5,000 next year.

silver.. the expectation is silver price will return to a GSR (gold silver ratio) of 60 or so.

so, if gold gets to 5,000, silver may get to about $83.

Imho, I think it's okay. I mean, I don't wash the gold often, but it doesn't exhibit corrosion when accidentally exposed to liquid.

Same with most positive asset, not a crisis if bought early, however I think the R/R getting concerning...unless, u intend as pass on legacy.

Hi all, how does the gold perform during liquidity crisis?
*
Scenario 1.
You intend to invest $10 mil in gold. This $10 mil is just 1% of your investable sum. No worries abt gold liquidity, etc. Just a drop into the pond, lose 100%, other investment will cover.

Scenario 2.
You intend to invest $100k in gold. This $100k is 50% of your investable sum. Then, question will be, why choose to invest in something u don't understand enuf n need to ask in a kopitiam/forum (as mention, line blur nowadays)

In bad times, when liquidity crunch....people sell off everything, gold, silver, house,, car stocks, watch, etc.

It will usually drop. U can see that happened even during the early April market crash. Gold dropped a bit.

However, crisis will result in govt easing, so gold will then rise back strongly.

Gold
$4142/oz; RM563/g

Silver
$52.70/oz; RM7.165/g

RM4.2275/$; DXY 99.28

At RM563/g spot, getting costly to buy gold. biggrin.gif

Silver still cheap, but no stock for big bars; coins have a large spread.

Wow! Luckily didn't sell my gold trinkets to fund Hatyai trip.

If the price continues soaring, might just be enuf to go Shanghai?

Siao, price manipulation...tulip mania.

Goldsmith shops might as well tutup kedai, and wait for gold price discovery/revaluation.

spot gold touched RM567/g at 1.30pm, smacked down to RM558/g by 1.50pm.

now RM560.50/g.

profit taking is very normal, very healthy.

if u r thinking of buying into a dip, this may be it! biggrin.gif

in $/oz, $4100-4110 will likely see buyers rushing back in... let's see...

never bought there but i can give u a comparison for u to decide:

habib 999.9 10g bar RM6075
https://www.habibjewels.com/gold-bars/habib...deliveryrefiner

tomei 999.9 10g bar RM6325
https://etomei.com/collections/bullions?page=4

silver bullion 999.9 10g bar RM5958
https://www.silverbullion.com.my/Shop/Buy/Gold_Bars

tomei doesn't charge credit card fees.
silver bullion is a bullion trader, not jewelry shop, accept only cash transfers before collection.

current spot price RM563.1/g.

u mean SLV?

SLV is going thru some interesting times... i read they reduced allocated silver, i.e. less SLV shares now available in market.

elsewhere, i read some US online stores shut down, no silver to sell. biggest store in India also shut down, no physical silver.

LBMA is under short squeeze, some are airfreighting (crazy!) silver bars from Comex to LBMA to profit from arbitrage difference of $1.60 per oz.

lastly, news surface again that Taco may tariff imported silver (not gold) by up to 50%, to be known on Oct 19.

silver supply-demand has been in deficit for decades. price been manipulated too low, nobody wants to mine. that is about to change.

non physical gold or silver, i think can sell some, take profit.

physical... "you hold it, you own it". no counterparty risk, can hold forever! biggrin.gif
