The patient of African origin is still being held as a suspected Ebola case pending further tests. — File picKOTA KINABALU, Sept 15 — Doctors in the Sarawak state capital, Kuching, are monitoring a suspected case of Ebola, Datuk Dr Zulkifli Jantan, the state health director confirmed today.

“Yes, investigations are being carried out. No details yet. He is only a suspect,” he told Malay Mail Online by email, adding that there was no cause for alarm.

Dr Zulkifli said health officials are monitoring the patient but declined to elaborate.

The patient is believed to be an African male suffering from a fever.

He is Malaysia’s second suspected case of Ebola. The first was reported in Perak last week and later proven to be negative.

Ebola is a hemorrhagic fever, often fatal to humans and monkeys. An outbreak has caused more than 2,000 deaths in West Africa this year.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Health Ministry today confirmed that there were no confirmed Ebola cases had been reported in the country.

Its director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the ministry will continue close surveillance and advised the public not to panic.

"We are monitoring closely, but to date, no cases of Ebola have been confirmed," he told The New Straits Times.

"We would have informed the World Health Organisation (WHO) if we had a confirmed case," he added.

He pointed out that all cases tested negative to date.

Meanwhile, Sarawak Public Health Assistant Minister Datuk Dr Jerip Susil said a 24-year-old Zimbabwean student is currently under observation for Ebola.

"He is now in the Sarawak General Hospital isolation ward but other than symptoms of high fever, there are no related signs to the deadly virus," said Jerip.

It is learnt that the student never left the state, but came into contact with several Nigerian students who recently returned from their home country.

"Apparently the Nigerians are healthy and showing no symptoms at all. This could just be a false alarm but we are taking this threat seriously," he added.

The student fell ill last Saturday and sought treatment at a private hospital before he was transferred to Sarawak General Hospital Isolation ward.

"We will know for sure if this is Ebola, once the test results returns within a week," said Jerip.

I see no reasons (legal or otherwise) that prevents them from returning from a break back to studies which they've fully paid for. Screening & recent medical history declaration before entering? Yes. Beyond that, let em in. Place yourself or kids in their shoes.

I think national security is paramount.

Of course, they should be allowed in if they are fine.

Malaysia should introduce compulsory quarantine for all person coming or travelling from affected areas, preferably a week or two.

school fees are more important than a deadly outbreak?

this is the sort of mentality that's gonna kill us all
I'm not even suggesting a complete lockdown, but whats wrong with carrying out more stringent quarantine measures on new people arriving from infected regions for at least 21 days JUST TO MAKE SURE?

Apart from the usual medical processes involving international students, Malaysia should even conduct their own medical tests on new entrants for added precaution.

Dude, take a chill pill. Thousands more Malaysians very easily die from road accidents ALONE per year than confirmed Ebola deaths in countries currently being ravaged. Have you any idea the issues or costs that would arise from properly housing and care of ALL passengers from suspected countries for a month? How about yet to be suspect locations? The legal and psychological issues from isolated/quarantined people, including travelling Malaysians. Mass country-wide panic? Spend some time outside the box and see the whole picture before suggesting such unimplementable (yes, not a real word but sufficient) plans.

The above is utter stupidity, ebola will definitely kill millions if you necessary precautions aren't in place to control the disease.

If you bothered even doing more reading, alot of countries now are carrying out the 21 day quarantine measure on visitors from the infected regions. Hong Kong is one of such places with such measures in place, that includes Sweden, USA and alot of European countries.

So before you begin dismissing things, I suggest you read more widely.

It is learnt that the student never left the state, but came into contact with several Nigerian students who recently returned from their home country.

Oh so widely read 1. Apparently your wide reading didn't educate you that countries operate differently. I laugh that you place Malaysia alongside Hong Kong & top ranking countries. This is bolehland. Ask those countries if they simply woke up and implemented such extreme measures based on speculation. Look, I'm all for precautions & all, just that proper measures and warnings need to be issued out way ahead of time so both health workers and travellers alike can be prepared and liable for any mistakes on their part.

Ahh so Malaysia can just continue being complacent as we have been doing all along? These countries had such measures in place when they discovered suspected cases of cos they r taking no chances.

Im not asking for a complete ban but we should at least make sure. Now Japan has even developed a 24 hour ebola testing kit, which would make detection faster.

I'm aware of that and wouldn't wish such slow painful death on anyone. Ebola, ALS, HIV/AIDS, Cancer, CAA, Schizophrenia, Asthma, Diabetes, Polio. Heck, even the common cold are incurables. Read my other posts for my opinions.
The end is and has always been the present.
