That is just a gimmick, a "hero's skill". The actual story is quite interesting. Imagine a group of people chosen to be heroes and sent to destroy evil. Midway through the journey the majority of them decided they don't want to continue because they are afraid. The remainder continued on and completed their mission. On the way back, they were suddenly ambushed and killed by the cowards who are afraid of the truth being exposed.

Only one of the true heroes survived. By the time he recovered and returned, the cowards were now elevated to high positions in the country and the real heroes instead were labeled as traitors. And so starts an epic story of revenge.

Oh, there's sex and nudity involved.

There were only 25 episodes. And three feature movies.

Well, the manga is painfully slow. Perhaps it's better to have ended the anime there than to have the animators make up stuff (eg, the original FMA anime).

If you think about it, the Berserk TV anime actually rounds off. The first episode had Gatts already being a one-eyed, one-armed badass and hunting demons in revenge. The rest of the story was about flashback to his youth, how he got to know Griffith and why he ended up hunting demons. Thus, one can say the entire series can be seen as a loop. Yes, in the end we never get to see how Griffith would meet his end (if ever), but as mentioned the manga is painfully slow and we're nowhere near the end.
