days ago extracted my molar tooth, dentist said it had cracked and split, can't do anything so i simply agreed to the dentist preferred recommendation to extract.
later came home and did some research, learn that split tooth can actually be saved as long as the crack does not extend deep down below the gum line. this makes me wonder if the dentist makes no good effort of saving my tooth and simply wants me to get a replacement tooth.
the reason for such thought is because no X-ray being performed to determine and confirm the length of the crack during the checkup. furthermore, days prior to the extraction, there is no gum infection and the pain is not severe unless bite hard....no chewing activity almost no pain.
is my dentist expertise and integrity questionable or is it my understanding about how to diagnose non-restorable crack tooth flawed?
any thoughts?

QUOTE(dark_axl21 @ Oct 31 2023, 05:07 PM) I see, then could you have bitten on something real hard or tough? nothing unusually hard just my usual snack, like nuts and beans. to add, any pain or discomfort i experienced post filling is much lesser compared to before filling is done. Hence i was actually very surprise that the tooth cannot be saved.

QUOTE(WaNaWe900 @ Oct 31 2023, 05:36 PM) you can ask the doctor for other option such as x-ray at own cost to reconfirm either removal indeed the final call... it didn't cross my mind at that time, as an ignorant layman being spooked by what the dentist said... only after going home and doing some reading and research i learn more about cracked tooth. But it was too late now. Anyway, i do like more thoughts on my case because i still need a replacement tooth and i do not want to visit the same dentist anymore if the person is incompetent. is it consider a form of negligence when my dentist stop at surface inspection to conclude my dental condition? any experience dentist here? can an experience dentist know for sure a crack/split tooth can't be saved just by surface inspection?

QUOTE(WaNaWe900 @ Nov 1 2023, 12:34 AM) ...so in my layman understanding even spend >5k it's not guaranteed the tooth will perform as before and be there till death do me part Understood that. But saving natural teeth is always the better option than having replacement tooth since nothing is guaranteed, whether is bridging or implants...bridging won't solve issue like gum recession and bone loss, while implants has a common issue of loosening abutment screw especially in single implants molar which is known to cause more complications...

QUOTE(Batusai @ Nov 1 2023, 06:44 PM) a surface inspection and a periodontal (gum) check on that said tooth can roughly tell the extent and severity of the crack. A crack tooth is pretty tricky to properly diagnose and treat. Usually if its not too severe or minor symptoms, we may like put a band on the tooth and monitor, in case it develops to more serious, may have to consider an exploration of the crack then possible a root canal procedure. Then monitor again until its stable to place a crown on it. THere are alot other factors as well to consider, eg remaning tooth left, the amount of forces the tooth will be subjected to overtime. that will let us determine whether its worth trying to save or better to remove and replace with another more stable option. There factors are to be discussed with patients and come with a decision. Thanks for the input. Unfortunately, no such effort can be seen during my dental treatment. All my other teeth are still intact, the affected tooth shows no loose sign too, even the gum region around the affected and now extracted tooth has no infection. Almost all observable factors encouraging a deeper look to save the tooth...
