Let me share a typical case that a dentist will meet almost everyday.

A patient walk in with toothache, disturbed sleep, throbbing pain. There are literally only 2 solution for this. Extraction or Root Canal Treatment + Crown.
Extraction will be cheaper, but the patient will lose a tooth and it WILL effect the BALANCE of your mouth ( eg, you tend to chew 1 side, food get stuck in between the gap, etc etc )
Root canal Treatment + Crown will preserve your tooth will easily end up over Rm1000++
So, a bi-annually dental check up and scaling will help you detect any small problem and fix it before it got worse. MANY patient tend to walk in when they have pain.
You do the math, Rm100+ per year for scaling + checkup OR loose 1 tooth and regret it later ( until now, i havent meet any patient who say they didnt regret and very happy to extract their tooth ) OR Rm1000++ for a SINGLE tooth

Don't save the money, rotten teeth will affect your health and even lead to heart disease, pay up and go private dentist for a second opinion. Most likely, they recommend u extract.

does anyone know how much would it cost (estimation) to extract abscess.? assuming it would also require tooth extraction.

An example would be like, drifting of your teeth, shrinkage in jaw bone, build up of dental cavity, sensitivity, and others, which will cost more to fix in the future.

Dental Implants can be done in 1 day

Usually the total treatment for a complete dental implant to a crown takes around 4-6 months and sometimes if severe cases can take to 8 months. However the 1st surgery procedure can be done in one day, usually in 30 mins to a few hours. There are times where we can take a badly injured tooth out and place a dental implant. Again it all depends on individual.

Any advice on root canal treatment for the second molar?

I have just had my impacted wisdom tooth extracted and the dentist told me that the second molar is slightly damaged (small cavity at the back) due to the impact from the wisdom tooth over the years.

So, is root canal treatment always effective in saving the tooth?

And one question that puzzles me is that I have had some dull ache after my wisdom tooth was extracted. So far the pain has gone away after two weeks.

So, the nagging question is that whether the dull ache was due to dry socket or due to the toothache from the second molar. I can't pinpoint either.

Hi, if you don't mind me asking what's your age? And I don't think reasonable answers can be given without access to your X-ray records.

P/s: the dull aching pain is definitely not dry socket.

Sometimes a wisdom tooth can impact the 2nd molar. In this case this is probably what has happen. So it is right that an you might need an x-ray on that 2nd molar to actually figure out how much damage is the 2nd molar. Usually pain from wisdom tooth extraction is normal as the body is healing. But the pain should subside in a few days. Sometimes it can be longer than few days to 2 weeks. Do not worry, I would recommend to take a small x-ray to figure out where the cavity is. If the cavity is very big on your 2nd molar, and if it is situated in your tooth root, Root canal treatment might not even help. If it is a small cavity on the tooth, not touching the root. A small filling will do. There are many ways to treat it. I do suggest to get an x-ray so that you can totally confirm what is happening and also you know what is going on.

If your 2nd molar is at the lower jaw, it has two roots. So if the wisdom tooth has damaged so much of one of the root, there are ways where you can only take out one of the root leaving one more root for that tooth. If that were to happen a root canal treatment needs to be done first, then continue with taking out part of the root. So friend, there are many ways to treat it, but do ask your dentist. Your dentist may need to get an x-ray done first before anything.

Why have your teeth check every 6-8 months?

Today we want to talk about why is it important to have your teeth checked by your dentist every 6-8 months. The main fact is, that a lot of us do not know what is actually happening to our teeth and our mouth. This is because our teeth and mouth is the last thing we look into except our front teeth. We just continue to brush our teeth and use mouthwash without actually checking the back of our teeth. We take care of our appearance but our teeth doesn't make much of our appearance on the outside except on the front teeth. Yes our front teeth plays a huge role in our aesthetics on our face. But today we are not going to talk about the aesthetics just quite yet. I will address this topic another time.

In truth is, research has already pointed out that there are lots of bacteria in our mouth. There are good and bad bacteria. If the bad bacteria will to build up, it will cause problems not only your teeth, but it can affect your gums, jaw bone and even your over health. If your teeth is very dirty, calculus will build up. Basically these are hard stones that sticks in between your teeth and they are unable to remove with just brushing or even mouth rinse. These calculus will build up, and if not removed they will become severe and eventually start to destroy your gums and your bone underneath the teeth. You might have slight swelling, bleeding gums or even pain. Do keep in mind that infection (meaning bacteria) can actually runs from your mouth to other parts of your body. So if untreated these bacteria can travel to other parts of your body causing more harm to your body. To treat these problems late will be more costly as the treatment will be different.

Sometimes we are unable to see tiny holes in our teeth. These tiny cavities do not actually give you pain, that is why we think it that it is ok to leave it. However leaving it untreated will allow the cavity to grow and eventually become bigger. When that were to happen you will eventually feel pain and other sign and symptoms, which require more invasive treatment.

So the verdict is, try to keep your dental maintenance once every 6-8 months. If calculus build up, your dentist will remove them immediately, that way it doesn't build up. Try not to wait for long to get it done, as it will be more difficult to remove these calculus, and the these bacteria might already have damaged your gums and your bone. Thus your dentist will be able to identify dental abnormalities or problems so to prevent other problems. Every 6-8 months for a dental maintenance is a great start to keep healthy and also to prevent other problems from happening. All dentist should explained in details to you before any treatment starts, make sure you know the details of your treatment and the problems you have before doing anything. As a dentist we always like to have our patients to know more about their dental health.

Yes you are right. Dental implant cost differ from cases to cases, and it also depends on the type of dental implants are used. There are many brands of implants out there and they differ in cost. Some are made from China, Korea, Germany, UK ,USA, and others. The most important thing is that they should be made from titanium or ceramic. Ceramic Implants cost much more than titanium, so we usually use that for patient who are allergic to metal or titanium. however, both of them works just well. The cost also depends if the site of the implants needs bone graft or not. But in normal simple 1 tooth case, dental implant for one tooth including the prosthetic part (The crown) can range from Rm5000 to even RM 8000. We understand that some of the dental clinics doesn't open 24 hrs or doesn't open for emergency treatment midnight. There are times where a tooth ache just cannot wait till the morning to see the dentist. So today we would like to give you some tips so that you can actually use when there is a dental emergency. It might help depending on the condition, however if it is life threatening please seek help at the hospital immediately. These are just some tips you can use before seeing your dentist or on your way to the hospital.

1. Swelling near the tooth:
In this case if the swelling is not large, dissolve tea spoon of salt in a cup of warm water. Rinse at continuously. Take a painkiller if you feel pain, and place a warm moisture tea bag on the area of swelling to reduce the irritation. If you see swelling that just continues to grow please call the emergency help line for the hospital. This is because swelling on the lower jaw can block your airway, meaning making you difficult to breath.

2. Tooth Knocked out:
Immediately get a cup filled with milk or your own saliva and immerse the tooth inside it. If the knocked out tooth is cleaned and not dirty, you can place it back to in your socket. Do seek help immediately as there are ways to still treat the tooth and save it.

3. Stop swelling and Bleeding:
​You can place a cold towel at the area where the swelling is or outside of the bleeding area. There are cold packs you can buy at the pharmacy or even at the shopping malls. Keep these in your refrigerator so you can use them in emergency cases like this. But a cold towel will also help in reduce the swelling and relieve the irritation. If you have gauze at home, please bite on it for few minutes. With pressure it can help reduce the bleeding. If you have bleeding from an accident, please by all means seek help immediately. In this case a motorbike accident, might cause fracture on your jaw or even somewhere on the face. In this case it is important to go to the hospital right away.

4. Pain surrounding one tooth:
Yes, sometimes it is difficult to sleep with on of the tooth giving that problem, especially you just cannot get enough of sleep. This is one of the main problems people are facing, but there are ways to reduce that discomfort. Take a painkiller immediately, a strong painkiller will help. On top of that place a cold towel or cold pack in that area. If you can pin point which tooth is giving the pain, you can soak a cotton ball with just a few drops of Olive oil and Garlic clove oil. Apply this soaked cotton ball at the area of the tooth where it is painful. If you see there is a cavity, place it into the cavity. It can help. After that please go to the dentist, this is because the pain can cause serious swelling later on.

5. Locked Jaw:
We do have a lot of cases like that. When people yawed or they open their mouth too wide it sometimes can cause your jaw to lock, meaning unable to close. You will be running around with you mouth open. Please a cold pack or cold towel at the area of pain. If it is midnight and no dental clinic is open, you can go to the hospital right away as they will take the necessary steps to help you out.

Well, there are some of the step you can take when you have a dental emergency. But, please these are not treatment as they are just a temporary help so that you can reduce the suffering. Do seek the dental clinic, medical clinic, or even the hospitals for treatment. Without treatment the problems will come back. Well, take care everyone.
