Hi sifu
I wanna ask,
is it normal to expect auto myvi rpm to go down twice when it just shifted to the 4th gear. For example, on 4k rpm in 3rd gear, shifted to 4th, rpm dropped to 3k, then after 1 sec, dropped to 2.5k rpm while throttle input remain the same. is this due to the overdrive or sign of tranny prob?

Are you sure it was in 3rd gear at the beginning?

hi dares.
yep, super sure. that is what i have thought initially so I did make sure by downshift to 3rd manually and the car instantly downshift which is the sign that i was in 4th gear before. then rpm was holding at 4k-4.5k, if it was in second gear, by that time it will upshift dy but it didnt. So i am sure it was in 3rd gear

after that i shift to D, then what i described happened. 4k -> 3k -> 2.5k

What speed were you at when you downshift to 3?

4.5k RPM at 60-70kph sounds like 2nd gear hmm.gif

3k RPM at the 60-70kph also sounds like 3rd gear.

Strictly based on the RPM vs speed reading, it makes more sense if it were 2-3-4 gear. But I have no explanation why would it go into 2nd gear when you shift into 3. Then again the Myvi auto gearbox is a bit weird compared to my experience with other cars.

I don't have access to my family's Myvi at the moment....can only be sure if I get the chance to test it later smile.gif

I have driven someone's myvi before. Myvi/toyota, like all 4-speed auto gearbox, have lock up torque converter. For myvi, it wil trigger the lock up at 65km/h (thats why it drops to around 2.5k) and will briefly disengage if you release your throttle above 65km/h or drop below 65.
If you turn off your OD it will only stay in 3rd and will not go into 4th and will not activate the lock up, even above 65km/h.

It might had downshift into 2nd when you press your accelerator too hard while it was in 3rd, causing it to violently jump the rpm to 4k and hold into 2nd gear for a while. Yes, all cars detect your throttle/accelerator position together with road speed, and some are smarter by detecting your car gradient (uphill/downhill) , to determine the best gear to be in.

The rpm i gave is estimation. I was having more concern on the pattern/behaviour at 4th gear than 3rd so did not pay full attention to that exact rpm figure at 3rd

thanks for your reply.
something new to me that myvi got lock up mechanism, even SC guys dont know what i am talking about. Mayb i asked the wrong person.

for downshift part. i did not change any throttle input. and it will cruise above 3k or 4k forever even until 5k, and the moment i hit it to D, it shifted immediately, that why i am so sure it was the 3rd gear.

Hmm.. some update..

Today i found out that RPM is not only drop at 4th gear, this also occur at 3rd gear as well. In 3rd gear, the drop is harder to notice. i could see rpm drop around 200 during my low speed cruise at 3rd gear. it always happen when you give the it a little more gas, suddenly. like 1.5k rpm accelerate a little to 2.5 like that, then hold it. I will see the rpm dropped to 2.3 or 2.2.. icon_question.gif

That is torque converter.
eg. whatever gear you are in, let's say you are
- leisurely cruising, 80kmph @ 2.5k rpm.
- when you want to accelerate, it become 80kmph @ 3k rpm.
- when you free fall, it become 80kmph @ 1.5k rpm

And no, it is not dropping gear when accelerating (an example of down shift with the context above it is 80kmph @ 4k rpm)

There are some free-play or 'follow-up' work that the torque converter has.
