i just got report from staffs from Sony Center G floor in lowyat. the staffs there told me one of the sales representative is a great liar; he is willing to lie anyone in order to get sales. type of funny cases told and my clarification :

International warranty - I, staff from Sony Malaysia (and Sony Center) never sell any Sony phones that have international warranty. if you got a different answer, it is a lie.

Waterproof Xperia E1 - 1st time I heard about it. Xperia E1 doesnt have IP rating but if someone said it has, i would welcome him/her to dunk it into water and see if it stays alive. if it dies, please blame the representative that represented you.

Made in Japan (WTF?) - the brand is Japan, product is made in China but it is quality assured. think about it, your iPhone and Samsung, its manufactured in China as well right? i rarely heard phones are made in Japan.
*
Hi, I just want to ask a little bit more about the bolded part.

i was hoping that there is some sort of international warranty coverage for Xperia. I'm studying in Germany right now, but planning to pick up an Xperia when I come back for holidays later this year. I'll be mostly using it in Germany.

It will be kinda sad if this is true, as the mobile price in Germany is higher thanks to VAT and import tax.

No and no. If there is international warranty, then no point for getting local set as warranty can be claimed everywhere.

There is no way that phone manufacturers will make their products have "international warranty". Why? Because it would kill of their respective local dealers when consumers buy their products from overseas and then during RMA claim warranty from them.

Normally phone manufacturers dont provide international warranty unlike other electrical items and consumer goods.
*
I see. Thanks a lot for your explanation.

Cos I see some electronic items have international warranty, so I thought (hoped) the mobile phones would too.

QUOTE(lchee @ Oct 6 2014, 02:57 PM)
Let me correct my initial claim of Z3 is not loud.  What I meant was the audio jack output volume is not loud.  I connect it to my earphones, at max setting, the loudness is significantly lower than what I can achieve with my old Iphone 4.  Not that I like to blast music out loud.  But usually when I connect my Iphone 4 to my car audio, I need to max out the volume of Iphone 4 in order to be able to hear the sound clearly (especially for movies with conversation), due to the road noise and in car cabin noise factored in.  With the Z3, the max setting is just not enough.  I can barely hear anything from my car audio.  With my Iphone, my car audio volume usually need to set to around 8 or up to 15 (sometimes some video files audio is simply too soft), with Z3, even when i set my car audio up to 20, I still can only hear conversation spoken in hush tones.
*
Could it be that your earphones has a different impedance etc that is not suitable with Xperia Z3? I'm not an expert audiophile, but apparently I read that the jack and earphones each has an impedance range, and if not compatible the earphone will struggle to produce higher volume.

Maybe you could try with a few dfferent sets of earphones and see if the problem still remains. Did you try with the stock earphones provided with the Z3?

QUOTE(lchee @ Oct 6 2014, 03:00 PM)
Quickly go submit your entry at One Utama, today last day submission.  They accepted my submission and I bought from Maxis.  Got 4 free gifts for purchase of Z3.  Adidas sling bag, a small adidas ball, a flip cover and a tempered glass screen protector.  The flip cover and screen protector will only receive later this month according to sony.  I gave them an address to mail the free gifts to.  And of course, a chance to win Sony PS4.  How many here took part in the entry?  The dealer at the promo booth really sold lots of Z3 and Z3 compact, the restock constantly cause phones are flying off the shelves.
*
Wah, Xperia Z3 really selling so well?

Hope this can turn around the profits for Sony.

have you tried playing with the music setting? i was unhappy at first then i tried....

1. when i use the phone speaker, i turn ON the ClearAudio+ music become super power, my iphone5s cannot fight
2. using my headphone, i need to switch the clear audio off, as using it makes sound bit slower dunno why. then i go setting > audio quality > sound effect treble boost > Headphone setting > DSEE HX turn ON > Surround Sound make club/concert setting = SUPER POWER

on the other side of note**

just watched the movie "Equalizer" everyone is wearing a sony phone.. dunno which model though, but at watching the movie, i has small pride owning a Z3

*
Equalizer is under Sony Pictures, or heavily promoted by Sony. Even The Xperia lounge app promoting the Equalizer trailer, so it's no surprise they do product placement there.

weird they even showing VAIO laptops even though there are extinct now sadly sad.gif
i wished they would have showcased their flagship phones in the movie.... look like all using mid range models... no Z2 or Z3 or even Z1
*
They probably filmed the movie much earlier, like a year ago.

Anyway, the VAIO laptops are still being sold in some countries (to clear stock, I guess).

QUOTE(ck.chunkeat @ Oct 8 2014, 06:59 PM)
That is one of the problems of android iinm. Android have a few different sound group. 1 for media and games, another for notifications and incoming call ringtone and another one for alarm.

If you look at volume under settings>sound>volumes, you will notice there's 3 different volume there. That's why, when you change the volume when you are at home screen, you will be changing the notification sound but not the game/media. I learned this the hard way where i was bored during the lecture and tried to play a game when my phone was in silent mode. Once the game load, the game music is on full volume.  rolleyes.gif

The same can happen the other way. When you are in game, the volume that you change is independent of the notification volume.

As for the fix, I don't really know how to fix it. Hope google will address this part of it as it is very inconsistent.
*
QUOTE(ascentic @ Oct 8 2014, 07:19 PM)
I see.. smile.gif thanks for the info.. I rebooted my phone and it solves the problem.. I guess need wait for next patch to fix this issue sad.gif
*
Hm, I guess it depends on context. The 3 volume groups work good for me.

For example, on my phone (just an Xperia S, not Z). The music/media volume is always silent, but the ringing/notification is not. So when I load games, it doesn't blast anything. And I can still hear notifications and ringing which is set to lower volume. The alarm volume is much higher (so I can wake up and hear it biggrin.gif ).

Android somehow has this smart volume management, which is quite impressive for me. When I plug in my earphones, automatically the music/games volume is turned up and I can hear/listen to music/games immediately. Once i unplugged my earphones, the music/games volume is back down to silent.

When in the middle of a game, pressing the volume buttons will change only the game/music volume. So later if you exit the game, your ringing/notifications volume won't suddenly be blasting or too soft.

Typically pressing the volume buttons in any non-game/music app or on homesecreen will change the ringing/notification volume but not the rest. This is great, because if I increase the ringing later if I load any music or games it won't suddenly start blasting them in the office.

So imo, the different volume settings works well and not a bug. smile.gif

Yes I agree with what you say, but sometimes I don't remember whether my media/games volume is on max when i wanted it to be silent. No way to close it other than opening a media/games app and close it.

All in all, I just want a way to make the phone fully silent.
*
Ah ok. Well by default my media/games volume is always silent unless I plug in my earphones, so it's not a problem for me. I just want to point that due to our different usages, I don't consider this as a "bug" that needs fixing, rather a good feature.

Well you can also change that by accessing the Settings -> sound -> volume but that will be a bit hassle.

There's probably an app for it if you look.

i was using iphone then switched to an AP snapdragon lenovo, but the usage experience was not as good.

does that mean i prefer ios? or would a sony/samsung android give a better experience?
*
Depends on what your "usage experience was not as good" is.

Was it the UI? the camera? Apps selection? Or something else.

Some owners of Z3 in this thread could clarify for you.

user friendliness is the main point i guess. and from a good user friendliness you get better experience.

so the question i have is: in general.. if you ignore hardware specific stuff like camera quality, water proof, sony skin, etc that is exclusive to sony, can i expect similar experience across android phone of similar spec? i.e if same 4.4 kit kat, same snapdragon, same ram, same screen size - 3rd party app experience should be similar?
*
Would you mind stating which apps that are buggy for you? It could be just your selection of apps
A study shows that apps actually crash much more often in iOS, just that iOS hides the crash by returning to homescreen immmediately.
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2455622,00.asp

I've not used Xperia Z3, but my Nexus 7 2013 running Kitkat 4.4 is smooth, no lag, very fast with 2 gb ram and 1.5 quad-core Tegra. Since Sony's UI sticks close to the vanilla Android, I don't expect much lag. I also read that most users of Z3 here state that it's smooth and fluid.

Personally, I think Android is easier to navigate. With the back button, home, and recent apps/settings I know what to do. With a single home button on the iPhone, if I'm in the middle of an app and want to go back to a previous page/settings, what do I do?

Sony's UI actually is very smooth regardless low or high-end components but with wrong or poor optimization, it will cause lag. However, since Sony's mid range phones also perform smooth and flawless, I assume their system has been stable since then.

So if customers or friends bullshit me how lag Sony's UI is and praise other manufacturers, troll is ready. brows.gif
*
Well in all honesty, my Xperia S does lag quite a bit compared to when I first got it.

I strongly suspect that's because of RAM, since it only has 1 gb RAM and stuck on Jelly bean 4.1.2 (last update by Sony, don't intent to root it). Looking at memory usage, Swiftkey and the notification bar app takes up quite a bit of RAM. If I'm running certain games, it will hog up the RAM and cause other apps in the background to close. And I get the the "Unfortunately, Maps has quit" notifications quite often.

Running the same game, with Swiftkey etc on my Nexus 7 2013 is no problem. Even then I see the RAM usage approaching almost 700-800 MB, so without Svelte optimisation and only 1 GB RAM it's little wonder lag happens.

That's why i'm looking forward to upgrade to an XperiaZ3 (or maybe Z2, depending on the price difference). tongue.gif

zite is one. not crashy, but sometime fail to open an article, workaround is to select open in browser - which links to chrome.

the google app store also does not help me discover as much interesting apps compared to ios app store. i'm sure most of the apps exist on both platforms by now - but apple does a much better job promoting them.

i do like the back button in android. and keyboards (but thats fixed in ios d). I dont like the high numbers of launchers, dialers, etc that seem to offer the same functionality.

but this is derailing from my initial query.. i'm guessing that the android experience is generally same across brands from the response i m getting.
*
I've not used zite before, so I can't comment. But in Android, there are usually a few apps that offer similar functionalities, and might be more stable for your device. That's one of the downsides of getting an app to work on hundreds of different devices with different specs.

As for app discovery, I can't say about iOS since I've not used it. But I've discovered lots of apps through google play.
For google, it tries to deliver based on what you like. So you have to put in a bit of effort. Start rating apps, and it will show similar apps that you might like. If you have G+, it will also recommend apps that your friends are using
I've found lots of interesting apps these ways.

I also surf AndroidPolice and AndroidCentral, so I also pick up interesting apps and apps on sale from there.

The number of launchers etc, doesn't bother me. I don't use them and stick to the Sony UI or vanilla android UI. I tried Nova Launcher once because I see it being highly recommended. Ddin't like it so I didn't keep it. That's the beauty of chocie, it's there for people who might like it.

Yeah. In recent news, Sony is blaming mobile department for the massive $2.14 billion loss, which I think most spent on their mobile department R&D. sweat.gif

I'm placing hope for Sony and my career. sweat.gif
*
I thought the loss only came from the mid-range segment of their mobile division. The flagships are doing well.

That's why Sony CEO said they will do a careful review of their mid-range offering.

Personally, I think they had too many mid range, e.g. M, L, T, E etc. Sony is a bit like Apple, if they start to offer mid-range but with 'premium prices", they will lose to others like Samsung and China manufacturers who can undercut them. I think Sony should skip the low-end market altogether, keep main focus on their flagship Z series, and maybe 2 mid-range variety.

I'm a bit more worried about their audio division. These days people like to listen to music on their mobile phones. Even Apple has discontinued their ipod classic and not updated their ipod line. I still like a dedicated music player, and if Sony decided to add a dedicated amp/DAC to their mobile phone, then they might phase out the Walkman too. cry.gif

Just hope they don't decide to close/sell off the mobile division as in Vaio notebook range
I still see Vaio being sold at Sony outlets. Who is covering the warranty now?
*
Sony is still convering the warrany if i'm not mistaken, though they might pass it off to a 3rd party to address them since they don't make them anymore.

The VAIO division is not completely shut down, it's now owned by another Japanese investment firm and I think I read rumours that it will be restarting up soon around next year after restructuring. So the new laptops might be called a different name or maybe still VAIO, just not Sony Vaio anymore.

Sony is still covering it, until the warranty period of the products ended.
I don't think it's a disruption for Sony because their Walkman players are the best if compared to other players. Btw, I still see Walkman players around in transits.
*
Taht's good to hear, because as you know the ipod has become popular that lots of people now think ipod is the best portable media player.

Anyway, back to mobile phones like I said it was only their mid range that was suffering loss. They still make profit from the flagship series, so I doubt they will shutter their mobile division soon. They're already reviewing the mid range, and I really hope they think properly to cut down on so many unnecessary models.

Yeah, you should see the ad for Remote Play by Sony.

Bunch of friends come over a guy's house and took over his TV, so he went into a corner and turned on Remote Play. laugh.gif

Oh their new ad emphasises this too, just released a few hours ago.
